Will UM BB Surpass The 16-0 Record?
After a slow start the basketball team destroyed iowa. Will this team eclipse the 16-0 start established by the '85-'86 squad? In order to do so, they will have to beat tsio on the road. To extend the record they then have to beat Minny on the road; daunting work, but I think these kids can pull it off; your thoughts?
Next 3 games:
Wed., Jan. 9 | vs. Nebraska * | Crisler Center | 7:00 p.m. ET |
Sun., Jan. 13 | at Ohio State * | Columbus, Ohio | 1:30 p.m. ET |
Thu., Jan. 17 | at Minnesota * | Minneapolis, Minn. | 6:00 p.m. CT |

I do not like M to win "at the Barn" but it will be a good game.
January 6th, 2013 at 2:20 PM ^
Even if I agreed with you, which I don't, they will break the record when they beat Ohio. While it is certainly feasible that Minny could beat Michigan, I like Michigan to win. I think they finish better than 13-5 in the Big 10, which all the "experts" say is the water mark. Indiana beat Iowa by 4, albeit on the road, and M destroyed them after destroying Northwestern, albeit a shorthanded Northwestern, on the road. We'll obviously know more about how good Michigan is when they play Ohio on the road, but it's not hard to like Michigan in every game with the depth, skill, unselfishness and pure talent they have displayed to this point.

You can't use the transitive property in sports. The Lions beat the Seahawks so are the Lions better than playoff teams? answer: NO. Purdue beat Illinois and MSU beat Purdue. MSU is not clearly better than Illinois. I can easily see M beating Minnesota I just feel after an emotional game vs. OSU on the road it may be hard to overcome a "rocking" crowd just a couple days later on the road vs. a motivated Minn team.

I like this graphic from the NFL this year.

Every team is better than every other team, including themselves.

I know anything can happen, and I know the transitive theory isn't a good way to predict outcomes, but no matter what measurement you use the Wolverines look better than Minnesota. They will tie the record when they take Nebraska to the shed and I believe they will be too much for Ohio to handle. Even supposing they lose to a Minnesota squad which I believe will sputter once the Big 10 schedule weighs on them, it won't have any impact on the record anyway. Michigan hasn't played their best game yet. They've had rough patches in every game I've seen, and in all of those games they won comfortably. I don't think I'm going out on much of a limb when I say this team will break the record and win more than 13 in the Big 10 season.

Please don't use the transitive property argument. That is a grade school thing.

Under Beilein it's been pretty true. Excluding his first year (when we couldn't beat anyone), he has owned the Gophers.

Certainly possible, but I'm a realist (read: pessimist) and say no. They'll drop one of the two. Although it's possible they drop both as well. Both those teams are capable of beating us. Minn is just real good, and Ohio will come freaking fired up, and both are on the road.
January 6th, 2013 at 2:33 PM ^
January 6th, 2013 at 2:35 PM ^
Michigan is also "real good", and it's not like Michigan will stroll into Value City unprepared for the game.
January 6th, 2013 at 2:46 PM ^
has a lot of value to it, just sayin'
and yes we will surpass 16-0, ohio can't score with us, that game might be an ass whoopin' by the end, maybe ohio comes out tough to start, but I just don't see them keeping up.
Minny will be tough to beat, but Minny will have to play lights out for 40 minutes to do so, tough task, remember, we're really effing good too!
I think it's more that teams need to worry about us than the other way araound.

on how much slack the refs give Craft when he's guarding Trey. With a home town crowd, iffy reffing and fired up OSU, it's possible Trey could have an off game. Note that I said "possible", not "probable." Trey has taken his game to a whole other level this year and is probably doubly motivated to win at OSU. First, he would love to show them up considering OSU didn't recruit him even though he was a local kid and two, Craft shut him down last year, IIRC. Oh yeah, a third motivator will be having family/friends in the stands down there.
Now I just need someone to give a warning about looking past Nebraska to provide a good laugh. We can look past them and still walk away with a blow out victory...

I do not think it will be any time soon. This team is very different from last year. Everyone knows their roles, and there is no longer the pressure on Timmy to do it all. He knows he's the #2 star, and has accepted it. That wasn't the case last season. when he was trying to be "the Man". In addition, even if Burke and/ or Tim are having an off night, there is Air Canada and Spike to solidify their positions. Also, you have a more confident Morgan, who plays better at PF this year knowing that if he gets into foul trouble guarding another Big Man, he's got 2 very capable back-ups in Mitch and Max who, as Beilein stated after the game tonight, can step in with little to no drop-off. This team will lose, but I don't see it for awhile. There just isn't another team deep enough on the schedule until late January... at best.

as the Iowa game was getting to a 30+ point lead. But as the above said, their basketball team must suffer for the sins of their football team. I'm sure WolverineHistorian would support this view, he seems to have a good memory of the regular thrashing they would put on overmatched teams back in the day.
Michigan 102
Nebraska 58

concerned with how they finish (obviously) but yes I think they do. Early adversity would not be a bad thing. A lot of undefeated teams get nervous and tight. Watching this team today I did find myself thinking, and I remember the 85 -94 teams, that this was the best overall Michigan team I've seen. Not sure yet its early but they are more athletic, disciplined and deep as a team as just about any I remember (including the ones with Rice that put several players in the NBA. Robinson is so good, he's probably going to be a lottery pick this summer, hate to say it.

I was at the game today this team has the potential to simply outscore everyone they play, never had more fun at a game despite the start. I found myself simply laughing during the second half, however I think they split the road games, but I'll say they beat ohio.
January 6th, 2013 at 2:36 PM ^
Nebraska is in for quite a nightmare on Wednesday night, and we'll blow the doors off of Value City next weekend. We'll be 17-0 this time next week.
January 6th, 2013 at 2:38 PM ^
than to beat Karl Malden and Ohio!! Nebraska is just awful will be lucky to keep UM under 100.
This is the best offense in the country. As the freshmen improve their D and hopefully Horford can come back strong I am beginning to believe the sky is the limit for this squad.
GR III may have the best hops since Joel "change" Thompson or Thad Garner. If you remember these guys, you are an old fart like me...

That dunking only skill got him to the Globetrotters : ) I never saw Bill Buntin, who tragically died at 26 and who the team MVP trophy is named after, but he was rumored to have a 50 inch vertical. Rickey Green has stupid leaping abilty as did Maceo Baston. I still like Joel Thompson as my high flyer. Windex man!

... that guy was picking alley-oops headed for the thirteenth row over the backboard and jamming them. Really amazing hops. Not that bad as a pro, either.

Dunkers for me would be Vince Carter, Dominique Wilkins, and MJ. Thompson, Stevie Francis, Darryl Griffith are in the dunking HOF but not as good as the first three imo. Real old schoolers have to consider Dr J and Connie Hawkins too.
For leaping I gotta go with Spud Webb.
