Excellent breakdown. Every…

Excellent breakdown. Every time I read about RPO concepts, it makes me wonder if college football will ever change the OL downfield rule to match the NFL. I'm just happy Michigan has finally embraced it like so many of the successful offenses in college football. Of course, now that Michigan is doing it, the rule will likely change...

Brutal Combo

McSorley's accuracy on these moonballs and his WRs ability to high-point the ball made for a tough day for the Michigan secondary. I know Jourdan Lewis recently tweeted about height not being a factor on fade routes but it sure felt like it on Saturday night. Most of the time, the coverage was right there but we couldn't break anything up.

The announcers kept pinpointing the problem as having a safety in that coverage but what else are you going to do? They are running fades out of the slot and you can't put four CBs on the field and hope to contain Barkley in the running game. PSU had a great gameplan and they executed it as well as you can hope to. Hats off to them for crushing our top-5 defense.

Let's get all the positive feels back the next few weeks.

vs Timeouts

James Franklin also 0-3 against timeouts.

It's probably much worse but I don't watch enough Penn State to know how lopsided this rivalry really is.

Left Shark

McElwain could bring back more popularity to the shark costume since Katy Perry's Super Bowl performance a few years back.

It totally, definitely, absolutely wasn't him though. Just listen to that presser. </sarcasm>

Talent Evaluators

Recruiting sites typically show a high correlation to team success and NFL draft chances but they revise their rankings all the way up through signing day. A lof of these 3* Michigan has picked up have improved in the minds of the recruiting sites by the time they are done with their high school career. If anyone at Scout/Rivals/etc. become highly successful talent evaluators, a college program would pick them up and find a role.

It's a tough task to find 16-17 year olds and project what they might do but I will err on the side of trusting Harbaugh, Brown, and the rest of the staff who knows what works in their system and may value certain skill sets/attributes more than a generic recruiting site.

Welcome aboard, Sammy!

Two OL Coaches

This is a great hire!  I am in favor of two experienced coaches working with the OL even if it means JayBaugh moves to a position group where he has limited experience to date.  Jay will be fine.  He seems to be just as relentless and innovative with coaching as his dad but without the cache/previous experience.

More Please!

Hopefully we have a few more "Hello" posts to read early next week.  The weather may not be ideal, but if you want to play for Harbaugh, I think you're ok with a little cold weather and snow.

I love Thomas' versatility and competitiveness.  He seems to have the personality to compete on Day 1 and get some playing time right away.  The secondary will be really young next year but also very talented.  Between Hill, Long, Thomas, and St. Juste, I'm feeling pretty good about our CBs for the next few years.  Now if only we could get a 5* WR for them to compete against every day....(crosses fingers for Monday "hello" post on DPJ).

Slow Clap

Excellent article.  Excellent player.  Excellent girlfriend .  I wish all the best to JD going forward as not only a great player, but a great ambassador for the program and the city of Detroit.

</ standing ovation

Talented Coaching Staff

Not only do we have the best coaching staff in the country (IMHO anyway), I think an underappreciated part of the staff is all of the talented coaches that they have hired for behind the scenes work.  People like Bush and Poggi who were successful coaches at the high school level are likely scouring high schools around the nation to see innovative plays.  On top of that, they are likely scouting Michigan's offense to try and find tendencies where they can deploy a play just like this McDoom play to counter the defense's reaction.  Where is that reporter to write an article on Poggi's influence???

What a difference an innovative and determined coaching staff can make in just a year and a half.

The only suspense

The only suspense in this game is whether Rutgers will do any pregame shenanigans to stoke the "rivalry."

Train Formation

The best part of the Super I / Train / Human Centipede formation is that other coaches now have to prepare for it.  Sneak Peppers into the midde of it and teams won't be able to identify him pre-snap quite as well.  He'll either be an even more effective decoy or may get a chance to make a big play because he isn't identied.

41-13 Michigan

41-13 Michigan

Note to self I was imagining his notepad to say "review timeout and field goal decision. The crowd seemed to think my decision was hilarious. Not sure why but probably worth another look. Make sure to ask harbaugh after the game to steer clear of negative recruiting --- I like to take care of destroying my coaching reputation on my own."
Entire Staff

This entire coaching staff provides interesting and worthwhile pressers.  They all seem genuinely invested in the players and I hope they all stick around for a while.

Harris

Any chance we can flip Najee Harris if he has cut off communication during his season?  That seems like a long shot to me at this point but I'd love to be wrong. Never count out Jim Harbaugh! He is the reason Chuck Norris went into hiding.

I love how JH picks up and

I love how JH picks up and mandates these special teams details during a game while also handling everything else.  Hoke couldn't even wear a headset because it was too much chaos for him.

I think it's interesting how hard JH campaigned for Peppers in this post-game presser.  He probably picked up on the fact that the national media has cooled on him a bit even though his impact on the game is huge.  A few more plays on offense and another couple return TDs to go with his ridiculous defensive stats and he should be at the heisman ceremony come December.

Defensive adjustments It's nice to see the team make solid adjustments throughout the course of the game. There was some sloppy tackling and some blown coverages but they cleaned things up a bit and responded well to the early deficit. Between coaching adjustments and getting a few key defensive players back, I am expecting even better performances down the road. Our punt return is something special right now. Try to get down field right away to get to Peppers and you risk a punt block. Keep guys in to block and you give up some serious return yardage. I love their aggressiveness and it sure helps to have a game changing player back there.
