question:  trying not to read too much into the 'overall rank' of the various players, but would it be a fair conclusion that if a player is taken way off of his rank, for instance a texas receiver ranked 28 was just taken at 52, is there some issue of either character or injury there?   maybe one at a time, not too much, but overall, would be curious if there is some correlation between the rankings and guys taken way high or way low in relation to the rankings.

Yes. Guys fall constantly for off the field reasons. And sometimes it's just "fit." Or a combination of all three. The DT from Texas, T'Vondre Sweat. He's huge, listed at 6'5" and 366 pounds. Not every defense uses a pure nose tackle, so that eliminates a certain amount of teams. Then he had a DWI a few weeks back. Some teams will remove a player like that from their board entirely.

He went right around where he was projected, so it isn't a perfect example. But being the #3 ranked player at your position doesn't mean you're the 3rd best to every team.

Another example. I couldn't remember his name for a sec...

certainly that's true and i recognize that.  i was asking more of a macro-question about that. in general is it a 'steal' to get, say, the # 32 player in the #58 pick, or is it because the #32 guy has some issues.   anecdotally, anything can be a legit explanation, but the generalization and how strong the correlation is, that's my question.

they just had the raiders on the clock with blake as the 'best fit' for what they needed.  ranked at 48, still hanging around in the 70's.  who will take him?

Corum, Wilson, Zinter B2B2B!

I'm excited for Corum and Wilson and happy for MGrowOld that the Browns got a bargain provided his leg heals fully.  Wish the Steelers didn't have to deal with #65 for the next few years, though :<)

That's all 7 of the Wolverines Alex was certain would be picked, with Zinter going a little earlier than might have been expected.  A good sign towards breaking the record would be if Barner/Keegan/Johnson went off the board early tomorrow, but it will depend on a big run in the 6th-7th rounds (for Harrell/McGregor/Nugent/Jones/Henderson/Barrett/Barnhart/Wallace).

Per ESPN, Michigan has 8 of the remaining 156 best available.  There are 156 picks left.

Next is AJ Barner at #52.  The 8th Wolverine is Trevor Keegan at 150.

I applaud the college gameday crew for their nice work on covering the NFL draft.  Their coverage has been entertaining with some really solid analysis.  Desmond, Kirk, Reece and Saban are really good.  It's not perfect -- they talked over Roman Wilson's selection for one.  But I'd rather listen to the people that cover and know college football than listen to the NFL-centric guys such as Kiper, Schefter, etc.
