As with everything Harbaugh, this will unfold in a totally normal and not-weird way. Wish we could just get an omnibus update when he finally gauges the love metric and makes a decision.

The most shocking part about all of this is how people are surprised. This is the third year in a row Harbaugh has gone looking for an NFL job. It’s clear he wants to get back into the league – and that’s OK! He’s Uber competitive he’s already done everything he can in college football now it’s time for him to win a Super Bowl. This talk about Warde not showing the love or the JUB bear hug narrative is just a distraction. Harbaugh wants back in. There’s nothing that Ward can do about that. It’s just a matter of whether or not a team wants him.

I mean, this is what having Harbaugh as coach is going to be like.

you hire a successful NFL coach, and you are always going to deal with NFL interest.

The reason that guys like Saban didn't garner NFL interest was due to his failures at the NFL level - and he understood that. He scratched that itch.

Harbaugh was a 1 yard away from winning the Superbowl. So that is something that probably  irritates him to no end.

Guys fron NFL backgrounds that are successful in college will always get interest from the NFL.

Its the price of success.

I see nothing wrong in at least talking, and then receiving an offer to find out your worth at the NFL level, especially if it helps negotiating with Michigan.

Next season, Michigan will be coached by Harbaugh, Moore, Minter, or someone great.

The returning defense is A+. Offense has a big hole at QB.

This is all going to work out fine, fellas.

This is not surprising. I posted months ago, before they fired Staley even, that the Chargers were after Harbaugh and it was his most likely destination if he leaves. I’m not sold he’s going to the NFL at this point, but the Chargers were always the likely place. We’ll see what happens.

Jim said he will be at Michigan as long as they want him.... and he said he wants to be where he feels wanted.    Michigan offering him a contract of $12m/year (there are rumors it could be more)  is going to be competitive with any other suiters.   Now that Belichick is out of NE, the contract Michigan is reported to be offering makes him the highest paid college coach and top ten paid coach in any sport.   The Chargers are not known to be big spenders, if he leaves it won't be about money.

If the hold up is Michigan not wanting to give him some protection from a NCAA or B1G witch hunt, then he should leave.    The man has done everything anyone could ask of him, even took a f'in' pay cut.......

I believe he will stay, but like all the players who have decided to pass on their remaining eligibilty and enter the draft, what better way to leave than on top?

Upside.  A new D coordinator will be handed a scheme and can grow into it.  While Sherrone greatly improved the offensive line (and he will be there to keep that monster going), the offense struggled against top defenses.  Sherrone will hire an O coordinator.  I hope the new O coordinator will improve the offense.  So I think the team will improve if Harbaugh leaves.  If he stays it will also improve.  The glass is full.  Just have a reasonable QB.

I'm glad he got us the championship.  Past 3 years have been great.

But this needs to stop. "I just want to be wanted"... "I need a contract"... "Don't out happy happy".  I don't know what else he needs.  We're only going to keep losing out on big recruits and the portal is gonna be crazy once he leaves.

Based no numerous other threads and comments it seems clear to me that what Harbaugh wants is some sort of contractual assurances that he won't be fired for any of the potential violations the NCAA may hand down from the Burgergate and Signgate issues.

That appears to be the 'love' he wants them to show, that they will have his back vs. the NCAA and not use any punishment they hand down as a way to fire him for cause.

The fact that this has not been solved yet would lead me, an uninformed outside observer just putting the pieces together, to believe that Michigan simply cannot alter their employment contracts to accommodate his wishes.

Anybody else wonder what "Meeting with" means? That could be a whole day in LA with the owner & GM or it could be a Zoom call in his office. Seems like that would be important.

There was a thread the other day where someone floated the idea of Belichick to the Cowboys. I though that Belichick would demand more control than Jerry J was willing to cede. I think Harbaugh would be the same -- I just don't see him going anywhere without full authority over personnel.

I don't think Jerry is capable of giving up that much control over his 'boys.

Jim came back, which wasn't ever close to a sure thing.  Then he lost his way for a couple years.  Then re-evaluated everything and everyone, including himself-which most people don't have the capacity to do.  Then found his guys, went back to Harbaugh football, and spent the last three years going 40-3 and capping it off with a National Championship.  He's more than earned the right to leave, and I will have nothing but good feelings for him forever.

I do think hiring Moore as the new HC is the right thing to do, though to expect him to be as good a coach as Harbaugh immediately is beyond stupid.  Big difference between a coordinator and head coach-success at one doesn't guarantee success at the other.  See Weis, Charlie.  Sherrone will make mistakes, the best we can hope is that he only makes the big ones once, then learns from them and doesn't make them again.

He'll have my total support-which I'm sure is a great relief to him-and I think he's earned the chance to take the reins.  Next year I expect a good but not great season with 2-4 losses.  He'll get 3 or 4 years to make his mark and prove himself, and hopefully will have 15 or 20 years as our head coach.

People just have to remember that 40-3 isn't a realistic expectation.  Based on our history, it's a once in 50-year run.  I think 1971-1974 was probably the last period that approached those numbers.

I agree tempered expectations would be best for Sherrone Moore. However, I would point to an actual post-Harbaugh successor to provide some real hope for us. David Shaw. He kept the machine that Harbaugh built running for quite a while, and yes it ended eventually but Stanford is a very different animal from Michigan.

I would definitely temper my expectations for Moore's success at Michigan but I think we would be in very good hands and wouldn't experience much of a drop off from Harbaugh.

It could easily go that way, and I really hope it does.  I'm just emphasizing that we need to cut him some slack for the first year or two as he finds his way as a head coach.  He'll probably want to do some things differently than Jim did, and obviously he's not Jim in terms of personality, etc.  There are always some growing pains with a new coach, especially one who's never done it before.  Hopefully they are minimal and short-lived.

I like Sherrone, but the truth is this: He literally only has 12 hours of "head coach" experience.  That's it.

Harbaugh was still the head coach during all the weeks he was suspended, just not during the games.

Making Sherrone the head coach by default would be a big risk to take for a national program like Michigan.

The counter argument to that is that letting the guy who's 1-0 against OSU (and who not incidentally rebuilt the OL and made the Harbaughffense work in 2023) walk away would be an equally big risk.

I get what you're saying but if Harbaugh leaves I agree with Sam Webb's take.  The culture has incalculable value and we need to hold on to as much of this current staff as possible to keep it going.

Obviously. I want him to stay for my fandom reasons, but it also seems it would be fitting for him to stay to continue to be a voice of change for the college athletes to obtain revenue from the huge TV contracts. Leaving sort of feels like he’s taking his shots at the NCAA/Conferences, etc, and then leaving without actually changing the situation, just saying words about what he thinks is right, and then going to the near soulless NFL.

Maybe I’m being too critical since NIL and Portal have obviously become a thing since Harbaugh showed up here.

I don’t know, just my 2 cents.

I hope this time is it one way or the other.  This yearly dalliance with the NFL is exhausting as a fan and damaging to recruiting.  I love JH and I hope to hell he stays, but man lets just rip the bandaid off already.

At this point? If this is accurate? I hope they make Coach an offer that he loves and he accepts. After the BS that the B1G and the NCAA have put him through, he could surely use a fresh start doing something other than college football. My parting words to him will be: thanks for bringing us back to greatness, the three-peat, and the perfect Championship. You went out on top. 👍👍

Edit/add: were I his boss, I would publicly express huge gratitude - and privately breathe a quiet sigh of relief at his departure. Coach is brilliant --- and probably an energetic handful to "manage".

Standing by for further news ....

Chargers' ownership and management have been generationally dysfunctional.

We all love Jim but he ain't the easiest guy to get along with, and with the clowns running the Chargers, it's not the best fit. Not to say that if anyone can turn the Chargers around it's Jim.

Hopefully Jim decides to stay at Michigan.

That being said it's his life, his wife and family, and his aspirations. Hopefully the UM administration can get things in order to make Jim's choice less difficult.

Chargers are my distant 3rd favorite team in the NFL...but my god does their ownership suck, and their situation here is not great.

And now that they are in LA, they are the least popular team here. At least in San Diego they were a loved team. Teams More Popular Than The Chargers (In No Order):

  • LA Lakers
  • LA Dodgers
  • LA Clippers
  • LA Angels (Of Anaheim)
  • LA Rams
  • LA Kings
  • Anaheim Ducks
  • LAFC
  • LA Galaxy
  • USC
  • UCLA

If Harbaugh wants to feel the love, hes going to a team thats basically invisible.

Their shared stadium (where they only get 18.75% of ticket revenue) is basically 80% visiting fans any given game, and they practice 40 miles down the 405 in Costa Mesa behind an IKEA. Yes, they are getting a new practice complex, but even its going to be fairly close, but it just shows how much of an afterthought they are.

And outside of Herbert, their future isn't that bright. They are cap strapped and have lots of key guys nearing retirement (Keenan Allen, Kahlil Mack) and are much closer to tear down mode than people realize. Next year is likely their last shot to win it all for a while.

Minus ownership, the 2024 Chargers are built a lot like the 2014 49ers...in all the bad ways. We all know how that went down.

Please don't leave. I don't want Moore as the head coach, I have zero faith in his ability to run the program. I have a feeling if he's the coach, next year this team falls off and finishes 8-4 and all the momentum is gone and we return to winning 9/10 games a year.

I really wish we could just turn all this success into better recruits, better NIL, and a OSU-like run through the conference (although the conference is way harder now than when OSU dominated it).

I won't be mad if he leaves because he did so much for Michigan and won a freaking national championship but I would be sad to thing that era is over so fast and gone for a long time.

Unless you have the rare HC (Saban, Smart, Swinney, etc) who wants to stay in college, having success like Michigan has over the last three years will almost always result in major coaching shake-ups.  That's why having championship "dynasties" in college football is so hard for teams that can't keep head coaches.
