Baumgardner reports Bellamy now safeties coach, Helow LBs, Gattis picks WRs back up

From his twitter:

”Can confirm that Michigan is expected to move Ron Bellamy to the defensive side (safeties) and move George Helow to LBs after hiring Ravens assistant Matt Weiss as QB coach. First reported by 247. Bellamy, a former U-M WR, joined staff this year after leading West Bloomfield HS to a state title. OC Josh Gattis coached WRs last season and can again.

Yep. I know someone on the other thread said Sam said Harbaugh wanted to keep him, and Sam knows a lot more than I, but from a logic standpoint it looks like Jean-Mary was given the firm handshake a while back.

I mean , do you think Jean-Mary was the one to tell BVS to look around,  and then take off a week later himself?

I got the expression with dantonio when he just rearranged his whole staff, but this is a completely wrong analogy from what’s happened here. There is a ton of new blood on this staff. Harbaugh has built a completely new ship with a significantly different staff and focus.

Is it a better ship?  Will the captain make the same disastrous decisions he did before?  Will it reach New York in one piece at a record time?  Those are all valid questions, and I honestly I’m skeptical if this will work. But he’s at least aware enough to know that things need to change, and moving the existing pieces around on a sinking ship isn’t going to do anything.

I don't think it's as much rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic as much as looking at the sunk Titanic and trying to create a new boat to see if it can avoid smashing into an iceberg in the North Atlantic.  There's a good chance it'll hit something, but it might just be lucky and re-engineering enough to escape that faith.

Makes sense for balance of the staff (5 offense and 5 defense). Biggest question now becomes how good Bellamy will be as a safeties coach. Assuming he will have plenty of help from Linguist. And as a former head coach he should have an idea of how to teach for all the positions. Hopefully having Moore as a co-oc helps Gattis to be more comfortable balancing coordinator and WR coach duties.

Thank you. These 'cool' Titanic references and any Dantonio staff comparison statements are sooo far off the mark.

I've been as hard on Harbaugh as a lot of the posters here, but it legitimately appears to me that he's realized he's failed up to this point, and has accepted the challenge as demonstrated by taking a 50%ish pay cut and completely overhauling his staff.

Edit- just scrolled down and realized the majority of this board thinks the Titanic and Dantonio references are lunacy.

How? Dantonio moved coaches around that were already on his staff. Michigan has a staff that is half new guys, and the other half are respected coaches with + recruiting ability. it’s not comparable at all.

if we kept Warinner but had him coaching tight ends while Moore coached the OL and Jay became co-OC with Warinner while Gattis went solely to WRs, THAT would be what similar to what Dantonio did.

It’s getting a little ridiculous at this point. I get the recruiting angle part but now we are just putting people in places they don’t even have a lot of experience at.

Well Tatum doesn't need to worry about building a relationship with his position coach anymore... so there's that I guess.

Also, according to Sam Webb he coached the secondary in HS so I guess it's not as bad as I originally thought. He was also a DB his freshman year at UM, don't know that it means much.

"Men’s BBall is bringing the grit and grind we need on the court/field that we are used to."

Are you used to that for football? I'm for sure on the older end of the readership here and Michigan football has been the same as long as I can remember. Punching above its weight? Upsetting someone? Coming back in a game against a formidable opponent (i.e., not Minnesota)? Rare events in my experience ...

I'm good with a guy that just won a championship and played on the other side of what he's coaching.

More importantly, a) is the entire staff on the same page with overall and in-game strategy and b) do they trust each other in all aspects of their roles in the program.

I'm also happy with the number of heirs on this staff now.  I think the youth of this staff could help the head man get back his swagger.

Getting crazier each day. Good luck to Jim and staff. Note to Jim; are you done with this coaching changes and then shifting? Practice starts tomorrow. Better get your ducks in a row.
