Warde certainly didn't make…

Warde certainly didn't make Jim's decision any harder to make.

The fact that he wouldn't budge on contract negotiations until the 11th hour is all that we need to know. Don't play hardball with Harbaugh.

He could also end up being…

He could also end up being like Dabo (who has two titles) who couldn't even get an interview with Alabama. His stock is as high as it likely will ever be right now. He's cashing in. It's a smart move on his part if Superbowl is the #1 goal now.

In the SEC, FOOTBALL IS KING

In the SEC, FOOTBALL IS KING

I do enjoy listening to Ryen…

I do enjoy listening to Ryen Russillo's podcast. He covers CFB pretty extensively on it and I find his takes pretty palatable most of the time.

The BIG 10 has been really…

The BIG 10 has been really bad outside of Michigan and OSU during his tenure. That's the majority of his wins.

Wins against ND were against a first year and second year head coach.

Wins against PSU were against Frames Janklin. Nuff said.

Otherwise, losses to any team that is even remotely close in talent level.

Alabama, Oregon, Georgia, Michigan x3.

He clearly meant that he was…

He clearly meant that he was going to hang 100 points throughout the duration of his coaching tenure. The media immediately made it seem like he meant in one game. Just another conspiracy to make Ryan Day look bad.

I hope Santa brings back Jim…

I hope Santa brings back Jim Harbaugh, JJ McCarthy, and Donovan Edwards.

He's a defensive coach…

He's a defensive coach. Brady was essentially the entire offense through his tenure. But Brady wins less championships if he doesn't have a great defense year in and year out, especially in the early years when the defense most definitely won the titles.

The Pats are still a relatively decent defensive team. It's the offense now (without Brady) that is anemic.

Brady and Bill made the perfect combination for a dynasty. Essentially having one of the best offensive minds and defensive minds of all time on the same team.

That and Bill's scouting and culture building have always been top notch. Troubled players regularly went to the Patriots and turned their careers around.

I think he's the offensive…

I think he's the offensive version of Don Brown in terms of scheme.

Came in and made the OSU offense feel unstoppable. Alabama provided the blue print to stopping his offense in 2020. Always keep two safeties high, take away the deep pass and make them beat you in the short/intermediate game. Take away explosive plays, force them to march down the field and eat clock.

Since then, he's failed to adapt his offense effectively. And right now it feels like they are at where Michigan was at in 2017/18 when they were trying to transform their offense from power football to "speed in space". Only they are trying to be a power football team when in reality, Ryan Day is most comfortable with a finesse team.

This sounds like it was a…

This sounds like it was a Connor Stalions wet dream

Right, the impetus here is…

Right, the impetus here is that Harbaugh did NOT commit any offensive action.

Conor Stalions committed the offensive action. He is held accountable (lost his job).

Michigan, is the institution. They are responsible for the actions of their employees.

Jim is not legally considered an institution and has claimed he had no knowledge of Stalions actions (which is corroborated by Stalions himself). Under these definitions, the BIG 10 is not legally allowed to punish Harbaugh for a violation he himself did not commit.

I admittedly know nothing…

I admittedly know nothing about cars. Just trying to make the analogy work lol

Ryan Day is the trust fund…

Ryan Day is the trust fund kid who's daddy gave him a Ferrari that he shows off to all his friends but doesn't drive it because he doesn't know how to.

Then comes Jimmy, the big bad bully. Rolling in with his suped up Range Rover that he worked the past six summers saving up for. Suddenly, everyone loves Jimmy, he's the most popular kid in school.

Now, instead of kids being awed by Day's shiny (and barely used Ferrari), everyone wants to ride in Jimmy's bully mobile and they wonder why Day can't go faster than 35 miles/hour with his Ferrari.

Jealous and emasculated, Ryan Day starts looking into this new car Jimmy got... Turns out, Jimmy forgot to get his car insured and registered. He reports his findings to the DMV and demands they immediately impound his car and revoke his drivers license.

Day, now on pins and needles, waits to see if he can get rid of his bitter rival.

Jim Harbaugh: Welcome to the…

Jim Harbaugh: Welcome to the team Connor!

Connor: Thank you coach! This is TRUELY a dream come true! I would do anything for Michigan football!

Jim: That's what I like to hear! Enthusiasm unknown to mankind!

Connor: Hell yeah! Glad you brought that up. Here is a 600 page manifesto on my passion for Michigan football!

Jim: ...Uhhh, that's great...

Connor: Oh and here is all of my scouting reports! I took the liberty of scouting all our opponents and potential opponents! Even bought tickets on my own dime! That's attacking the day with enthusiasm unknown to mankind, am I right?!

Jim: ... (thinks - maybe time to change that saying)...

What I take away from this…

What I take away from this list is that Harbaugh could have 2 QBs rank top 10 all time in QBR and Urban/Ryan Day have zero.

His numbers look good on…

His numbers look good on paper but the eye test shows that he's still very shaky and reliant on big plays to boost his stats. I've watched every OSU game this year except last week due to conflict with the Michigan game. It seems like based on OSU fan reactions every week, many seem to agree with the eye test. Despite putting up decent numbers on paper, there are threads every week about needing a new QB because anyone who watches closely know that he's not playing as well as his numbers would indicate.

Accuracy is inconsistent on all throws (from short to deep). Not good while facing pressure, has a tendency to throw off his backfoot in panic when pressured, leading to some ugly, forced throws. He's heavily reliant on Marvin Harrison Jr (with MHJr making most of the plays happen). He's accounted for 28% of his completions, 36% of his total yardage, and 45% of his TDs.

I'll say that the one game that really impressed me was the ND game. He made some tough throws down the stretch and showed he might be a gamer when things are on the line. Other than that, he's been pretty average to below average given the talent he has surrounding him. That is still probably good for being the 3rd or 4th best QB in the B1G.

Damn someone beat me to it

Damn someone beat me to it

Dude, you totally forgot…

Dude, you totally forgot Jevin Gardner, Jenard Robinson, Jad Henne, Jom Brady, Jian Griese and Jelvis Grbac!

What I don't understand is…

What I don't understand is why we don't have technology help us out a bit more...

Put sensors at each end of the football. Install pressure sensitive mats underneath the field surface (similar technology is already utilized on basketball courts for analysis) to time when a knee or whatever touches the ground and use the sensors in the ball to pin point where it is located on the field.

Did the receiver step out of bounds? Lets see what the pressure sensors say! How about a sensitivity pressure at the crown of the helmet? Did the player make contact with that spot? Targeting! Did the ball ever touch the ground? Use a sensor to determine that.

We live in 2022. We don't need to use a chain tied to two sticks to determine a first down or a guy looking at a 10" screen with limited camera angles to determine calls.

Does history repeat…

Does history repeat themselves?

In 2016, #4 Michigan pummeled PSU 49-10.

They went on to upend #2 OSU 24-20.

In 2022, #5 Michigan pummeled PSU 41-17.

They will likely face another #2 OSU.

Obviously, if history does repeat itself, things don't end up all too well for Michigan but the parallels are kind of interesting.

I think when you've been on…

I think when you've been on top for so long, you aren't afraid to show a bit of mutual respect.

Meanwhile, MSU off in the corner convincing themselves that Michigan being good is some deep state conspiracy...

I get that everyone wants a…

I get that everyone wants a flashy offense with guys juking and spinning people out of their shoes but does anyone know how hard it is to defend a 6'6', 240 LB guy who runs a 4.5/6 in the end zone? The best was when Haskins would just use All as a human shield on his way into the end zone last year.

It's only entertainment if…

It's only entertainment if people don't take him seriously

He was probably just trying…

He was probably just trying to look like...Nobody

It's kind of crazy that you…

It's kind of crazy that you don't see more teams using multiple TE sets. Good TEs act as both lineman and receivers. Super versatile. The Patriots built a dynasty on the back of their TEs.

In CFB, I know Georgia has a ridiculous TE room. Haven't watched them enough to see if they are running 3 TE sets. If not, they should be, they are stacked.

I think the key difference…

I think the key difference is that Harbaugh is starting to take the monkeys off his shoulder. He's regularly beating teams we weren't before, he finally beat OSU. The NFL dream has passed. He now has full attention on Michigan and strengthening the culture.

Harbaugh is a culture builder. If the ball bounced the other way early on in his career at Michigan, we'd probably be here a lot sooner. But once the narratives began that Harbaugh couldn't beat his rivals or the ranked teams on his schedule, He seemed to have a slight identity crisis. Now that he's proven that Harbaugh ball can slay OSU, he's bought all in on it. We have a strong identity and culture, something we didn't have until last year.

But the concept of gambling…

But the concept of gambling is predicated on having superior athletes to make up ground and fill holes. Our secondary might be faster than last year but they still aren't faster than OSU's playmakers. Look at how all the teams that have played OSUs offense well the past two years. Alabama basically put the blueprint down on how to beat Day's vertical offense. OSU moved the ball against Bama but once they got within the 40 yard line, they stagnated because they were able to shift from essentially a prevent defense to a normal base defense. Oregon did something similar and I recall us doing it as well. I don't think you want to get into a gambling game with OSU, that's what happened when Don Brown was coaching. If we do give up a 50 yard TD, i'd rather it take 8 plays and 5 min than on one play. Day wants to demoralize teams quickly. We have to make them work for their points.

I hope that we see similar…

I hope that we see similar adjustments like we did last year and have two deep covers at all times to take away the deep ball. Maybe with the deception it's not just keeping two safeties deep but some other position leaking out to keep Stroud thinking. Hopefully by then we have some legit pass rushing threats that can adjust to win those one on one matchups that helped us last year.

Keys to the game. Generate a pass rush, keep everything in front of you. They'll move the ball for sure. But as long as we keep some safety blankets, those drag routes against LBs or streaks along the boundary are less likely to turn into home runs. The key is to not let them hit big plays. Tighten up the field and force them to kick field goals. This is largely what ND did to much success until they blitzed their safety and Stroud hit a walk on in the end zone. That's when ND lost the game, when they were forced to throw to get back in it.

Not sure. But you can…

Not sure. But you can certainly help share your profits with him if you sell it after he wins his 8th consecutive superbowl

They crunched the numbers…

They crunched the numbers and determined JJ had more marketability.

I can add this to my wedding…

I can add this to my wedding registry?! My fiance might kill me before we make it to the alter.

Don't agree with the booing…

Don't agree with the booing but what is wrong with the last part of your response? That is all true and further validated this season. Cade was the guy last year by default (JJ wasn't ready). Cade did what was asked and did fine for the most part but his performance last year wouldn't have gotten us far if our OL, RBs and our defense weren't all elite.

Shea regressed after…

Shea regressed after spending all off season playing golf...

Cade also seemed like he was really into golf this past off season and might have regressed...

Is golf the ultimate culprit for all the pain and sorrow Michigan Football has faced? Any idea if Brady Hoke or Rich Rod were also into golf?

Either Vincent Gray missed…

Either Vincent Gray missed the memo or he was running 5.0 40 yard dashes in HS.

I would agree with you if…

I would agree with you if...well you know...Cade lit up CSU.

IF Cade gets another shot at starting against UConn, he needs to show he can be the best game manager in the country.

I'd like him to work his way…

I'd like him to work his way up to a coordinator and potentially spread his wings to get some HC experience until his dad gives him a wink that he's ready to retire.

I'm in the exact same boat…

I'm in the exact same boat as you and OP. I believe in the everything in moderation ideology. That said, I have had moments where I think i'm toeing the line of moderation and take a step back. I think if you are able to take that step back (like doing a voluntary dry month) then I think you are doing it right. I would just be hyper aware if any of these habits impede your life in any way.

My biggest personal concern is memory. I've noticed instances of fading memory and i'm not sure if I can attribute it to substance use or to aging. Maybe i'll try a dry month to see if I gain any clarity on that.

They will have the talent to…

They will have the talent to win a title and have an elite defense but i'm convinced Ryan Day is actually trying to turn OSU into a BIG 12 team. He wants to get into a shoot out with his 5* QBs and WRs. As a BIG 10 outsider, i'm not sure he understands that the B1G 10 will always be a win in the trenches type of league. The B1G 10 more than any other conference is more about who's tougher and stronger than who's faster or more athletic.

Anyone remember when Jim was interviewing DC's and he wanted them to present how they would defend OSU's offense? I wouldn't be surprised at all if Ryan Day is so full of himself and his offense that rather than ask his interviewees how to stop Michigan's offense, he asked them how they would stop his own offense, which led to him hiring a Big 12 DC who wants to play 5 DB sets.

Speaks volumes about the…

Speaks volumes about the NCAA that conferences are going to the GOVERNMENT for help because they are so inept at getting anything done.

Thanks, I didn't know that…

Thanks, I didn't know that but makes total sense. Maybe an entity like the CFB will eventually decide to break away from the NCAA (as Gene Smith suggests) and will start their own league where they can license the branding of each University but operate the league separately from the University. And maybe provide discounted ticket packages for students and alumni. I think it is important to preserve some type of college affiliation even if it's just in name alone. Would probably be a tough pill for Universities to swallow but it's better to get a small piece of the pie then to let the whole sport fade away to obscurity.

Yeah, I think that is a…

Yeah, I think that is a reality regardless of what happens with the NCAA. The wealth gap in terms of talent and revenue is only increasing. Add the fact that the only schools that have a realistic shot at winning the championship will be those that have boosters that will spend the most money and you'll quickly see schools that can't compete pack it up. It seems inevitable unless NIL and recruiting changes dramatically.

I think there should be…

I think there should be stipulations that restrict boosters with University ties from offering NIL deals. Endorsements should be offered based on the players own marketability, not associated with the University. And in the same way Nike won't drop Lebron if he changes teams, these NIL deals should be national and not local.

The past is no longer an…

The past is no longer an acceptable future. Universities were able to profit and make huge sums of money while avoiding compensating the people that bring in all the money.

NIL and the portal has changed the game. Boosters are gaining more power by the day and admissions are having to do transcript back flips with how many transfers are occurring. This current system is not sustainable.

Universities need to adapt and make some concessions or watch basketball and football turn into baseball and hockey in terms of marketability. Another pre-professional entity will step in. The G League is already starting to poach some of the biggest HS recruits.

I propose that Universities…

I propose that Universities still operate teams, keep the traditions, rivalries, crowds, stadiums, merchandise etc. Just operate them as a business entity rather than an academic entity.

Provide two tracks for prospects. Pre-Professional (minor league) and Student Athlete.

Pre-Professional track offers a structured employee salary or at will contract. The contract/salary amount can be weighted based on recruiting ranking, position, etc and would be universal amongst all power five schools. Pre-Professional track admission is structured by draft. This provides options to athletes who do not care about attending school and would rather monetize their talent as soon as possible.

Student Athlete track offers either salary (which can be used towards tuition and would equate to the cost of tuition) or covered tuition (with no added financial incentives). Student athletes will be held to the same standards as other students, similar to how some students work during school. Athletes going this route will need to apply to the University in the same way other collegiate student athletes do. This option provides the opportunity for a free education for those who either may not have a realistic professional outlook or those who care about receiving a formal education.

Athletes in both instances may still receive NIL benefits from outside parties but can in no way be associated with a school. That means boosters with ties to a school would be restricted from providing benefits. This is meant for athletes to gain more national endorsement deals but restrict local endorsements.

CFB and to a lesser extend…

CFB and to a lesser extend CBB has outgrown the NCAA. Their relationship to academics and collegiate ideologies has been fading rapidly. Then NIL came along and put it in the ground. There is no reason to continue to pretend that these players and coaches are just normal students or university employees. They are minor league athletes and employees of a multi-million/billion dollar athletic business. Baseball has had the right model for a while. Players that want to start making money can do so immediately and those that care about getting a college degree can opt for the student athlete route.

Preserve University affiliation to name and brand only (athletes and coaches alike essentially become employees of the Universities' athletics business), structure NIL programs, cap the amount of money that schools can use towards their roster building, provide a pre-professional track and an academic track for athletes, lift academic restrictions on non-student athletes, and hell, maybe even have a draft out of HS. There needs to be an adjustment made on how we model CFB and CBB. You can already see how other minor league systems are affecting CBB. Time to evolve or fade away in obscurity.

Word is that he felt more…

Word is that he felt more disrespected by the salary differential between his and Macdonald. He was probably expecting a pay raise that would match what they gave Mac last year and it was probably well short and that led to the animosity.

A key at the beginning of…

A key at the beginning of the post would be helpful if that is how they want to roll with writing.

JH = Jim Harbaugh

JH 2.0 = Jay Harbaugh

JH 3.0 = John Harbaugh

JH 4.0 = Jack Harbaugh

CP = Chris Partridge?

1. I get the sense that both…

1. I get the sense that both parties were ready to make this a deal on paper but both had reservations. Jim, having to leave Michigan and everything he built. Minnesota weary of Jim's past with the 49ers and his reputation of being difficult to work with. This likely all came to front during their interview and the hesitation on both sides was enough to restrict each other from committing. I'd imagine no offer was officially made (he was likely told he was the top candidate) but the decision was mutual. I'm sure neither of them wanted to be married together if they both had serious reservations.

2. It will certainly hurt recruiting in the immediate. Opposing coaches and media will definitely spin that news and Jim lost a lot of good will. But if he continues to win like he did this past year and he remains an open book regarding his intentions, then I think time will heal. I think it will bode well that he was completely honest with the 2022 class. They can direct the 2023 class to talk to the 2022 class about how open he was about his interest and his word is good.

3. If we consider that Harbaugh would be around for at least another 3 years, there will be many more candidates ripe for succession. Gattis would probably be gone next year as a HC and having a two year sample size of being a HC would do a lot to quell some unknowns about it. Hart likely steps up and gets more playcalling and managerial skills. An up and comer like Larry Foote, Matt Weiss, Mike Macdonald will all have much more experience to look at.

What excites me is that last year's staff was filled with great coaches. Those guys now all have ties to Michigan. A few of those guys are bound to be HC material in a few years.

No on Hart - Not experienced…

No on Hart - Not experienced enough and would force Gattis to bolt.

No on Matt Rhule - He's 2-16 against ranked opponents and two of those wins were against Army and East Carolina. He didn't win a single game against a ranked team when he was at Baylor. He won 30% of his games at Carolina. He must be a good salesman because he parlayed one good year at Baylor into a NFL HC job, which turned out to be a mistake on Carolina.

No on Matt Campbell - I think the spotlight is too big for him at Michigan and ISU relegated to the mean this year.

Maybe on Dave Aranda - Baylor looked good this year but how much of that was a result of the BIG 12 being flat out bad? Baylor and Oklahoma State were top dogs this year. Hard to tell he's ready for a job like Michigan after just one season.

Maybe on Harold Goodwin - Inexperienced and hasn't been in college in forever. In theory could be a good candidate but there are so many unknowns and CFB is totally different since the last time he coached.

Intrigued by Larry Foote - Similar thoughts on him and Harold Goodwin but the superbowl rings don't lie. If those two came as a package deal, Harold a OC and Foote as HC or vice versa (except Foote as DC), that would be a very intriguing staff.

Intrigued by Bill O'Brien - He is clearly a good coach and has a proven track record. Just bit off more than he could chew at Houston. Never really got a chance to build anything at PSU.

Intrigued by Josh Gattis - If we were confident he was solely responsible for the offensive scheme and playcalling this year I would feel a lot more comfortable giving him the gig. He's young, would be an upgrade overall in recruiting, and could keep most of what is already built intact. This makes the most logical sense but it is predicated on how much of this past season offensive success can actually be attributed to him.

Want Luke Fickell - He is proven he can have sustained success in CFB and understands the region, OSU, and Michigan football. He seems to get the most out of his players and they always seem to play hard with a sense of grit. Only hesitation is his affiliation with OSU and him prospectively leaving and gutting the program to go to OSU when the opportunity arises.

Want Joe Brady - He orchestrated one of the greatest seasons in CFB history. He's clearly a brilliant schematic coach. Questions regarding whether or not he wants to be in CFB are the major concerns.
