The sequel wasn’t much different from the original, as Michigan easily handled Montana in their NCAA Tournament opener for the second straight season. Once again, Charles Matthews was clearly the best player of the floor. Once again, the Wolverine defense was phenomenal. Montana missed 21 of their first 25 shots, scored just 6 points in the first 12 minutes of the game, and finished with 0.81 points per possession. Michigan’s lead dwindled to eight after two consecutive Sayeed Pridgett buckets following the halftime break, but the Wolverines responded with a 10-0 run to put the game away. On consecutive possessions, Jordan Poole knocked down an open corner three, Matthews scored on a baseline out of bounds play, Matthews hit a wing three, and Zavier Simpson threw a sky hook alley-oop to Jon Teske. Montana called timeout, the lead was back to 18, and the game was effectively over.

Matthews scored an efficient 22 points, notched a double-double with 10 rebounds (3 offensive), and looked like the player he was last March during Michigan’s run to the national championship game. He opened the scoring with a putback, spun baseline from a post up and made a reverse layup, cut to the basket for a dish from Teske for a dunk, and bailed out a bad possession with a contested baseline fadeaway to beat the shot clock. He got out in transition for a couple of buckets, got to the free throw line, and showed off a complete offensive game — in addition to his characteristically excellent defense. Matthews’s tournament form takes Michigan to another level, and like last season, his athleticism was way too much for Montana.

The undersized Grizzlies were presented with an extremely difficult challenge offensively and most fared poorly. Montana’s starting guards — Michael Oguine, Ahmaad Rorie, and Tommy Falls — combined to shoot 8-33 from the field and were often leveraged into tough looks. Bobby Moorehead jumped a pass at the top of the key, had a breakaway dunk… and missed it. It was that kind of night. Pridgett, a smaller four and Montana’s top scorer, was guarded by Teske when he was on the floor (Teske sagged off of him) and found some success, finishing with 17 points on as many shot equivalents — he had a few nice drives past Teske, knocked down a couple jumpers, and was the lone bright spot for Montana.

Michigan was content to switch often on defense. Simpson found himself guarding Moorehead (Montana’s wing five) and Pridgett (who posted him up for a bucket in the second half); Teske did well to stay in front of smaller and quicker players, as Montana didn’t have any traditional big men. When they did find decent shots, they often missed — Pridgett was basically dared by Teske to take jumpers, there were plenty of long twos that clanged off the rim, and Montana finished 6-24 from behind the arc (after missing their first ten threes). In last season’s game, the Grizzlies got out to a 10-0 lead and then their offense fell apart. Tonight, Michigan’s defense shut them down for most of the first half before eventually letting up; after the outcome had been decided, Montana scored 20 points over the last ten minutes of the game and closed with a 9-2 run in garbage time.

Despite Michigan’s early dominance on the defensive end, the Wolverines weren’t able to race out to a quick blowout. Michigan actually scored less than a point per possession in the first half (a much better second half pushed them to 1.09 over the entire game — better than the output last season against Montana). Before the break, the Wolverines shot just 2-9 from three-point range and had 8 turnovers. Montana trapped Simpson and other ball-handlers on ball screens again, and while there was often an open man, passes got deflected and turned into turnovers. Simpson had 4 turnovers in the first half after taking care of the ball very well over the last few weeks; in the second half, he was more patient and didn’t have any turnovers. He finished with 10 assists.

Until the reserves checked in after the final TV timeout, Michigan went with the tight, seven-man rotation it featured for much of the season. Isaiah Livers was a natural fit in this game: Montana’s lack of size made him the sensible choice as Teske’s primary backup at the five, and Matthews’s outstanding performance lessened the need for his minutes on the wing. Livers enabled Michigan to switch everything and played pretty well on both ends. Matthews was fantastic, Simpson rarely scored but facilitated effectively, and the rest of the starters each scored in double figures. Michigan didn’t take advantage of Teske’s immense size advantage against the Grizzlies with post ups, but did get him a few looks from the ball screen game. Poole was scoreless at halftime but started the run in the second half and got going a little bit. Ignas Brazdeikis was physical, as always, and surely has some new haters after flexing on Falls late in the game.

In the end, it was a stress-free opening round win. Since Florida held on to advance past Nevada, Michigan will face the Gators on Saturday for a spot in the Sweet 16.

Going to be a tough game Saturday, but who are we kidding: They're all tough.

Simpson's 4 turnovers were a big story in the first half, but perhaps not as much as one would think: I've noticed that Simpson occasionally has trouble feeding the lane for a post or a cutter when he can't get an angle outside of the defense. He's been known to clang bounce passes off of legs and hips.

It's not a huge issue, but his lack of size means he sometimes has to try to thread things that larger guys could wrap. I suspect this is part of the reason that we can't always take advantage of mismatches on Teske in the post (a large part of the reason is that Beilein isn't a post-up guy). Later on Simpson was going with high feeds, which got Teske the ball but were a bit nervous and didn't always leave an opportunity for Teske to score.

This was as routine as a tournament game gets, though. It was actually weird at tip-off thinking, "hey, this could be the last time the team plays." Because once that was out of the way this felt like a game played in December.

Man, it's really awesome that we can get "used" to early tournament wins.

It was weird after watching Bradley give MSU all sorts of trouble to catch the first couple of minutes of the Montana game and say "yeah, this is going to be a comfortable win".  Weirdly refreshing.  And yes, it got a little tight there for a bit.

Simpson will always be limited somewhat physically, but I also think Montana was selling out hard to disrupt him almost to the detriment of everything else they did.  And to be honest, Michigan was a bit sloppy with the ball.  I don't subscribe to the Izzo "we're tired constantly" line of thinking, but Michigan last played a game on Sunday and, with travel, probably were a bit run down.  It didn't surprise me everyone was a bit out of sorts to start the game.  We'll see how the team looks against Florida; my guess is they'll be sharper.

I think the opponent deserves some credit for the first half turnovers.  They were a tiny team but that meant they had a lot of quickness out there.  They were like jitterbugs flying all over the place early on, and got their hands one some balls.  Michigan had to adjust to basically playing five quick guards.

The year is 2119. The streets are ablaze with crimson flames. The world's water supply has been replaced by Crystal Pepsi. The only government that exists is one that's in charge of parsing out the remaining supply of the world's toilet paper; only single ply. The land which once contained the Ohio State University has been upgraded to a large smoking crater. Michigan plays Florida in an intercollegiate sports game.

Gonna be hilarious when Florida becomes the SEC's first team to start a hockey program and the AD explains at the press conference that the whole reason was that Michigan had one, so it was an obvious move.

Here's Haylie Wagner shutting Florida's bats down in game 2 in 2015.

If our game was second perhaps they wouldn't make it to the end. If alcohol isn't being served in the arena (is it?), Sparty Naaaaaation would be torn between their two favorite pastimes: being degenerate jabroni's or rooting against their big brothers.

As it is, they'll certainly be there for at least the end of our game to root for Florida.

But Poole's offense is missing.  Must be a leftover hangover from Sunday's disaster.  Simpson's offense was OK but still subpar compared to recent games -- his ballhandling was also below usual in the first half.  Hopefully, this tuneup woke them up from their Sunday post-game funk.

I am telling my Spartan "friends" that it will be fun for them to say that their team beat the National Champion three times.

No.  His offense was the best we could ask for because only the bad was missing.  He had 10 points on just 6 shot equivalents in only 27 minutes.  Highly efficient. Good shot selection, got to the basket a couple times and largely deferred to other, better matchups.  That was perfect.

This is a MUCH better Poole than the guy that has blown several games for Michigan.  He's not good enough right now to be first (that's Simpson) or even second (Iggy) or even third fiddle (when Matthews is playing like this) so the team is much better off when he's a guy that takes what the defense gives him instead of a guy forcing a bunch of bad shots.

I feel like Iggy's walking a fine line between swag and douchery these days.....but I also think Falls was a guy who really needed to be flexed on.  If not outright posterized and then trucked as he slunk back down the court.

Absolutely.  And it doesn't really seem to bother Iggy beyond the usual annoyance with someone showing you up.  I'm not a huge fan of guys just being assholes for the sake of it, but this is a competitive sport with guys who are really, really good at it, and talking some shit and flexing on guys is part of the game for a lot of players.  I'm fine with it provided you aren't just being an asshole for the sake of it.

Basically went the way a 2-15 matchup should go. 1.06 is not bad for offensive efficiency especially when we had 8 minutes or so of garbage time. Florida has 15 losses this year although many of those are to good teams. We have a good team so while it may be difficult advancement to the next round should be eminently possible.

Florida has the sorta profile you expect for a P5 team that winds up as a double-digit seed:  no "bad" losses (though losing to Georgia at home wasn't good) but few real signature wins (though they did go 2-1 against LSU).

Their profile looks a lot like Maryland or a less polar Iowa.  A good team with some flaws that will provide a game against you.  But Michigan has played a lot of those teams and more times than not come out ahead.

I'd like to see Matthews continue to attack the rim. Poole needs to attack more as well. I think the offense will be better if thats their plan overall. That fits the makeup of the roster better. They dont shoot well enough to run a regular offense. They are kind of clunky. They don't have finesse. They probably have as much athletic ability as anyone. They might as well get after it.

First half Simpson was not good.  He was much better in the second half.

No one really looked good on offense other than Charles (given that Montana was not imposing defensively).

It's a bit concerning that we can't get Teske to dominate in a game like this.

But it was a solid win.  Take it and move on.

Looking forward to any two of our six getting hot in the same game.

Lately when Teske spots up for a 3, i get the same feeling that i had last year when Z went to the free throw line.

Teske is rushing his threes WAY too much.  We joked early in the season about how his shot was like loading a trebuchet it was so slow.  I assume the coaches tried to speed him up but whatever the cause, I think thats been a mistake.  He's releasing that thing from 8 feet in the air.  Until someone blocks it, take your time big fella.

This is the Matthews this team needs to be successful, and it was great to see him out there playing like the guy who was the glue to last year's run.  Hopefully it'll continue against Florida; I was surprised how mediocre Florida was on offense and their defense, while certainly formidable, doesn't feel like a world-beater.
