when you avoid disaster [Marc-Gregor Campredon]

Michigan 24, Army 21 (OT) Comment Count

What did we say about scheduling a military academy?

Army, as expected, was misery. They played trench warfare, basketball before the shot clock, bash your face against the wall ass football. They ran the ball on damn near every play at a halting 3.3 yards per carry; this worked well enough because they converted all three of their fourth-down tries. There were very few scenarios in which this game wasn't at least going to be profoundly annoying.

Michigan conspired to make it a near-catastrophe. They lost three first-half fumbles, two of which led directly to Army's pair of regulation touchdowns. The other came one play after Josh Metellus was incorrectly whistled down while picking up an Army fumble en route to the end zone. Shea Patterson was scattershot as a thrower and limited as a runner, seemingly ordered not to keep on a read-option no matter how much Army overplayed the running back. The deployment of Dylan McCaffrey was again confusing and ineffective. Zach Charbonnet churned out 100 yards and all three Michigan touchdowns on 33 carries; he also had no chance on a pair of fourth-quarter fourth downs that were dead to rights.

So there we sat, collective butts clenched, as Army's freshman kicker attempted a 50-yarder as time expired to put this game on the ultimate upset highlight reel. Cole Talley's boot slipped just wide to the right, and Michigan had new—if not wholly earned—life.

After the two teams traded touchdowns in the first overtime, it appeared the Wolverines would give that gift right back to the Black Knights. Patterson missed an open Nico Collins in the end zone before throwing two incompletions Tarik Black's way, leaving Jake Moody to salvage three points and giving Army the chance to win with a touchdown.

Then the defense, which had fought tooth and nail against the triple option all afternoon, saved the day. Aidan Hutchinson ripped through the line for a tackle for loss that set up third and long, not a specialty of Army's. As Kelvin Hopkins Jr. dropped back to pass for only the fifth time on the afternoon, Kwity Paye flew around the edge and met Hutchinson at the quarterback. Hopkins couldn't hang onto the ball and Paye eventually pounced on it, bringing a sudden end to a miserable slog.

Let's never do this again.

I've been wondering the same thing. Maybe he's on a short leash with just a couple reads? Maybe he's had the "take care of the football" thing bludgeoned into him so hard that he won't throw it unless the receiver is four steps clear.

If it is, as some have suggested, that DPJ is out, then we have another problem in that one good player missing from an offense that has a lot of good players shouldn't leave shambles.

DPJ coming back should result in an incremental improvement but not a monumental improvement in the offense.  Same goes for Runyan.  They're not Superman for crying out loud.  Besides, injuries happen to every team.  We need to adjust to being without certain key pieces on offense or defense.  The onesy, twosy injuries shouldn't handicap a team with as much talent across the board as Michigan, especially when your opposing defenses hail from MTSU and Army.

It's not about DPJ or Runyan being out.  It's about mistakes, fumbles and poor execution on offense.  That comes from coaching and not player participation.

Glad to miss it for travel.

Offense better find 2nd gear, let alone 5th, if this season is going to achieve anything meaningful. That is an obvious statement, but after the move to Gattis and a full offseason of speedinspace ... this sounds like old school, conservative playcalling and poor execution.

Everyone done whining yet?

Got the win...

and quit calling Harbaugh to be fired.  What an idiotic statement.  Love the guy, love the program, and love UM winning more than UM loses.

I appreciate all the free content here at MGoBlog, but ACE, it's great to read your game recaps. It brings the right balance of facts about the game with a shared understanding of how the game felt for us watching it. Glad to see you doing these this season!

Been thinking about it more today and I think the guys - especially QB - play scared. It feels like the coaches preach ball security so much that Shea is tentative with reads and afraid to make the throw in fear it will be intercepted. We end up turning it over anyway taking sacks. I’d rather we just let loose and if he throws interceptions, fine. Take risks. Be aggressive.

Yeah, I think there would be less bitching because Michigan would probably have maintained a 7 point lead and won the game by that many.

That was an awful miss by the referees.  Inexcusable.  Our mistakes were enough to give me grey hairs.  At the time I felt like we wouldn't be able to overcome our mistakes PLUS ref mistakes.
