MBB Loses First Game in France; Hunter, Jaelin Score 15
The French team we played tweeted out a full box score if you want to overanalyze it like I did.
Jaelin is a shooter and Jett isn’t shy about jacking it up.

Dug's box score wasn't too impressive but he did do this:

I got a sensitive content warning on this, lol
August 20th, 2022 at 5:26 PM ^
Me too. Must have hurt the other player's feelings.

Same here unless you click directly on that Twitter account, where it's NOT BLOCKED.

Hail to the "Victory."*
If anyone's interested, MGoBlue has been posting pictures and a short paragraph about each day's activities. Here's Day 1-4:
https://mgoblue.com/news/2022/8/18/mens-basketball-summer-tour-2022-daily-blog.aspx
* "Hail to the 'Victory' is a joke, based on the something the team saw in the Louvre Museum, the Winged Victory of Samothrace, featuring the Greek goddess Nike, aka, "Victory."

One year when we did one of these trips the team fell flat the other year they started out 17-0. Let’s hope this gelling will result in the latter result.

Michigan played a pro team. Not worried about this in the least.
August 20th, 2022 at 3:37 PM ^
Every Exhibition game played against experienced pros [without injuries] is a win. We are very young, replacing 4 starters and an experienced big back-up, and a former back-up PG. We need all the Exhibition games of this kind we can comfortably play.

So long as the team knows what's legal to carry from one country into another while traveling, sure.

Locked Up Abroad is no way to go through life, son...

I thought this (welcoming Youssef) was nice:

Also, they should give Barnes (2/2 from range, 2/2 from the line) the ball until he misses next game.
August 21st, 2022 at 7:20 AM ^
So, based on Juwan’s reaction and Youssef’s Twitter, his name is pronounced “YO-sef” (rhymes with Joseph). Correct?
August 20th, 2022 at 4:00 PM ^
who is the team they played? French professional team?
August 20th, 2022 at 4:26 PM ^
From the link:
Clemson alum Gabe Devoe led all scorers with 20 points for FOS Provence Basket. TCU alum Garlon Green and French shooting guard Dylan Affo Mama each had 11 points
From the google:
Fos Provence Basket, also known as Fos-sur-mer, is a professional basketball team based in Fos-sur-mer, France. The team currently plays in the first tier LNB Pro A, after its promotion in the 2020–21 season.
August 20th, 2022 at 4:27 PM ^
Yep, they're a pro team in the top French basketball league, having been promoted in 2018. Or so says Wikipedia.

Interesting that Kobe Bufkin only got 15 minutes in the game. Hoping that's not an indicator of where he is at developmentally, as it appeared he at least started.
Nice to see Barnes and Jett put up 3 pointers in addition to Jaelin.
Also looks like today it was wing by committee. Maybe a preview of what's to come.

I’m not feeling it with that kid. It’s not based on anything and I hope I’m wrong, just had to share my 2¢. Since, you know, it’s the internet.
August 21st, 2022 at 10:19 AM ^
This seems like a comment better left unsaid being that you have literally zero reasoning behind your "feelings". Also, I have no idea who you're referring to.
August 21st, 2022 at 7:48 PM ^
I assumed the commenter was referring to Bufkin, but it is a little unclear.
August 21st, 2022 at 8:09 PM ^
I mean he went 0/5 from the field and didn't score a single point in 15 mins of play. I think it's fair to start worrying a bit about his development, especially when we brought in a combo guard transfer who would have likely started at the 2 if Collins hadn't dipped.
August 20th, 2022 at 4:25 PM ^
Oh great, we suck again.
August 20th, 2022 at 4:29 PM ^
It's France - They are practiced at having their hands up around the basket.
August 20th, 2022 at 4:41 PM ^
+1 underrated
August 20th, 2022 at 9:06 PM ^
They’re very good at retreating on defense.
August 20th, 2022 at 4:27 PM ^
They should aussi send French amateur teams to train against American professional teams.
August 20th, 2022 at 4:28 PM ^
Good info, thanks.
August 20th, 2022 at 4:30 PM ^
We lost?
The refs clearly sucked.
Note: this comment doesn't really count. I'm just doing my own exhibiition to get ready for the coming season.
August 20th, 2022 at 6:03 PM ^
I heard at least one of the refs was from France. Can you believe that?!?! A clear bias. I bet Manuel stays silent again.
#exhibitioncomment
August 20th, 2022 at 8:06 PM ^
I heard is was Eduard Hautetour.
August 21st, 2022 at 6:53 AM ^
He patted a French player on his bout.
August 20th, 2022 at 4:35 PM ^
Solid start. The French team has multiple former college guys pros. Nice to see a solid performance from Llewellyn and Jett. A little disappointed in Bufkin's performance, but it's only 1 game
August 20th, 2022 at 5:38 PM ^
Turnovers and giving up points in the paint seem to be areas for improvement.
August 20th, 2022 at 6:01 PM ^
They beat us by 18.
Looks like they played Loyola (IL) today and only won by 5.
August 20th, 2022 at 7:56 PM ^
Shit, that means we'd still lose to Loyola by 13!
August 21st, 2022 at 9:04 AM ^
Clearly the Catholics are in cahoots
August 21st, 2022 at 10:13 AM ^
May not be a fair comparison though as this was our first game of the tour, while it was Loyola's last. These tours are like an extra training camp and guys will get better on them.
August 20th, 2022 at 9:25 PM ^
Fuck France. We saved their asses in WWII.
August 21st, 2022 at 12:35 AM ^
I know, right? I can’t believe those bastards had de Gaulle to beat us after everything we’ve done for them.
August 21st, 2022 at 10:05 AM ^
Of course, they saved our ass in the Revolutionary War - and then President Washington - who served alongside Layafette at Yorktown - refused to pay back our debt when he was in office.
Geopolitics is fun stuff.
August 21st, 2022 at 10:27 AM ^
Yeah, I thought the play on words was sufficient indication that I was just being cheeky. Guess not...
August 21st, 2022 at 11:48 AM ^
Same. I'm actually a bit of a Francophile. I can't wait to visit Paris again.
August 21st, 2022 at 8:20 AM ^
Not surprising, but TWill, Hunter, and Llewelyn had the most minutes of anyone on the roster. I assume that'll be the case during the season. Off the bench, Barnes, Jace, T Reed, and Dug had double digit minutes. Barnes off the bench played as much as Bufkin.
August 21st, 2022 at 10:58 AM ^
It will be interesting to see how the season progresses with Jett, Kobe and Barnes. Two of those three will be starters, it’s still to be determined which two though.
August 21st, 2022 at 11:33 AM ^
I agree, although important to note that Khayat & Baker were not in the lineup for the opener and both should get PT at the wing. How that impacts Kobe, Jett, and Barnes is certainly a question mark.
I don't think either guy plays on this trip - Baker is recovering from a hip procedure so no need to rush him and Khayat has yet to get his UM physical which won't happen until they get back to AA.
August 21st, 2022 at 11:41 AM ^
Starters for context were:
Hunter
T-Will
Jett
Kobe
Jaelin
