Moderator Action Sticky 2021

THREAD'S DONE. MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ONE: https://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/moderator-action-sticky-2022

--------------------------------------

Sharing Trolls Counts as Trolling: Sometimes desperately lazy outlets hire trolls, or trolls who are good at social media build enough of a following, that they become a headache for us, spreading hate or falsehoods. Because having them repeated on our site can directly harm us, if you're on the message board you should be aware that posting something from them could get you banned. They are:

  • SirYacht/Chat Sports/James Yoder - Fake news merchant who likes to make up plausible rumors or report non-sure things to get a false scoop.
  • Any local Spartan media when they talk about Michigan. Unless they're yelling "MAKE PLAYS!"
  • Pete Finebaum: FoxNews for SEC fans. Occasionally useful to them but the only times he's intersecting with us is when he's carrying Saban's water.
  • Rainer Sabin: Finebaum wannabe hired by the Freep to troll Michigan fans.
  • Steve Deace: Curiously well-funded white supremacist radio host who's got such a small Michigan following you can safely assume anyone posting positively about him is Deace and ban him again. Creates lots of burner accounts to promote himself. Recently booted by Maven for advocating lynching.
  • Barstool: People who took the freedom of young internet too seriously because really what they wanted to do the whole time was propagate bad ideas.

Hate to do this, but another for you to look at - https://mgoblog.com/users/theteam16/activity

Lots of unsubstantiated assertions about vaccine risk.

Thanks.

I already warned him, 'ThePriceisWRONGBob', 'Princetonwolverine', and one other MGoUser within the last hour or so.

I'm addition, 'Baywolves' has now been blocked. Because he has habitually shown himself to be a peddler of misinformation, I warned him last evening that he had until noon today to post links to the  nonsense he's posting; as of a few minutes ago he had failed to do so. Just banned him moments ago and was headed here to post it when I saw your post.

Hey Rob - I'm the PriceIsWrongBob.

I received ZERO warnings so not sure what you're referring to in stating this.

You blocked me for zero reason that I can tell as you did NOT email me or warn me.  Can you share evidence that you did so?  I have nothing in my Inbox or Spam folders.

I didn't block you, but I did post a reply somewhere to you warning of a potential banning.  Let me find it and edit it in to this post.

(edit @9:50: Here it is, from 1:25 pm today:

Apparently one of the other mods or Seth decided to override me, but if they did, so be it.  Generally speaking, the rule of thumb among us is that we give new accounts a very short rope.  Being that your 'Bob' account was just 5 weeks old, I was actually being pretty lenient.

You now obviously have a new account; use it wisely.

Posting to a covid thread? Be prepared to be required to post a link if you are peddling anything that's even slightly questionable.  The MGoBoard has higher standards than Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. and is NOT the place to post covid misinformation.

One more thing: neither I nor the other volunteer moderators have an MGoEmail account,  and although I could use one of my personal email accounts to reach folks here, I have chosen not to make my addy public. Don't expect an email from me, warnings from me are dealt with here on MGoBlog .

Also, since that thread continues to cause problems, I will soon be locking (in roughly an hour) the Vaccine or Negative Test Required to Attend UM Games Starting 1/1/22 thread but I will continue to allow the 'COVID in FORIDA' to remain active.

There's just too many fires to fight in that board thread, while in the diary thread most of the discussion has remained measured and civil.

In addition, there has been a bevy of quality information posted by you and numerous others in the diary, information worthy of remaining accessable to those who could benefit if only they click on the links.

Happy holidays Rob.   Appreciate all you do here.    I really hate coming here and suggesting that posters be banned, but I find it horrible that people post covid misinformation with seeming no reason but to convince people not to take the vaccine.

Don't mean to be overbearing, mods feel free to delete if you'd like.  I know this isn't the right place for this.  But, since you asked about the research on the effectiveness of cloth masks I wanted to provide it...assuming you're actually interested.  This is one of the few randomized controlled trials on masks impact on Covid transmission that exists, specifically comparing cloth to surgical masks.  Here is the link that study.  Important conclusions:

  1. There were significantly fewer COVID-19 cases in villages with surgical masks compared with the control villages.
  2. There was not a statistically significant number of COVID-19 cases in villages with cloth masks compared with control villages.

See peacefulbucks comments in the last page of the NYD bowl thread. He’s obviously gotta go.

COVID in FORIDA... has just been locked.

The thread has outlived its original stated purpose as a "source" of info for those who traveled to the Orange Bowl.  And since the bowl game it has become more and more a refuge for the same tired arguments about COVID.

Didn't want to be overbearing as much of this conversation has run it's course.  Feel free to delete as soon as you read this and decide if you care to read the paper.  But, since it was specific to our debate, is a new paper, and this has not been posted to my knowledge I thought you might be interested.  It is specifically seeking to answer the question "How many unvaccinated people do you need to exclude to prevent one Covid transmission?"  That study came to the conclusion that it would take excluding 1,000 unvaccinated folks to prevent one Covid transmission.  Here's the paper by Aaron Prosser and here's a video discussing it.  This paper has not been peer reviewed yet and just came out on preprint a few weeks ago.

Jon Horford thread issues:

https://mgoblog.com/users/beangoblue is ranting about religion being a fairy tale

https://mgoblog.com/users/notinmyhouse is ranting about Democrats

User A probably just needs a warning and comment removal as they seem like just a normal user with self control issues or something, but user B, despite having a somewhat innocuous post history, isn't even trying to disguise their rule breaking.

Meta: Apparently we can edit OPs now

Not working for some reason that I don't have time to figure out. Thought pressing a button would fix it.

OT: Djokovic entry into Australia denied

The discussion on this will begin and end with the following - their nation, their rules. The fact that Djokovic earnestly believed that somehow getting an exemption from the sport would supersede or otherwise persuade Australia to make an exception is quite frankly hilarious and he should feel like the idiot that he likely is.

In the words of the immortal (well, quite mortal - he's long dead) Banjo Paterson:

"Once a jolly MGoBlogger camped by a stupid thread

Under the shade of a Bolivia tree

And he sang as he watched 'till his thread was vaporized

Will you be sent to Bolivia with me?"

Well, he wrote something like that anyway...

"Jim Harbaugh" trending on Twitter for NFL positions (Speculation for now)

Let's keep it to news. Enough board posts on it already.

Very good chance that it happens. As it is, I negged his OP around 7:30am when I first saw his post, I immediately was pretty certain the thread was going to bear watching.

For now and possibly the next few hours, I intend on monitoring the conversation within the thread, largely to see where 'Oakland' goes with it.

On3/The Wolverine - Harbaugh has gone silent on the Athletic Department

I realize that responsible journalism is impossible for some people here, but let's try.

Josh Gattis as HC

This thread was a dumb idea, let's face it.

OT but good: arguing and fact-checking

Sorry, but anyone who asks people to "research it on the Internet" and has a video defending wholesale slaughter like The Crusades doesn't get to talk to people about how poorly formed the average person's arguments tend to be today.

You learn to communicate ideas, you learn to explicate those ideas, you learn philosophical logic so you are aware and can identify fallacies and other problematic statements, and so on. You do any number of things like this. You do not watch a fucking video.
