She WAS intolerable during…

She WAS intolerable during Sparty's glory-moment. But she has since used her platform to fight for BLM and against Trumpism, and she has earned my respect. Unlike many talking heads and unlike the frat-dudes who populate sports reporting, she has the stones to stick up for what she believes in, whether it's Sparty football or social equality.

His kids/grandkids are gonna…

His kids/grandkids are gonna just LOVE living in a dying democracy/oligarchy.

My superstition is to no…

My superstition is to no longer watch the games or follow the team because they‘ve lost  70% of the high-stakes game for the last twenty years. Liberate yourself.

The guy you voted for is…

The guy you voted for is literally killing our allies and strengthening our enemies to repay the Russian oligarchs who put him in power, and you’re still salty that a black guy was president. Wow.

After 20 years of knowing…

After 20 years of knowing with certainty that they will lose the game that matters most, the joy is Irretrievably broken. It’s like willing yourself to believe that your children will grow up in a healthy democracy when you know deep down that our destiny is in the hands of billionaires, and our nation is led by a soulless, mirthless buffoon. It’s over. Transcend fandom, use your time learning a new competency. The joy and pride is never returning.

*And you “no politics” jerkoffs, save your breath; you were always Trumpers anyways, and you can go fuck yourselves.

You’re right. We should all…

You’re right. We should all be super apolitical while a soulless, mirthless buffoon takes a blowtorch to our democratic republic.

Homemade vinaigrette is life…

Homemade vinaigrette is life-changing: 1 part acid (lemon juice, red wine vin) to 3 parts extra virgin olive oil. Shallots, bit of Dijon mustard, et voila!

Part of the existential…

Part of the existential fuckery of the 20-year losing streak to OSU is that to be considered a truly great Michigan player (or coach), you have to have beaten Ohio State. It may be unfair, but that's the reality. Henne might have had a great arm, but give me a QB that was able to beat our rival, not go 0-4. Ten and 3 is a nice record, but if it always includes a loss to Ohio State, then it will forever lack the mark of a truly great team. The last great Michigan QB (whose excellent play helped beat OSU) is Tom Brady, whose long pro career is nearly over. Following the team in the '70s-2000 there were consistent heroes: Leach & Huckleby; Harbaugh to Kolesar; Desmond and the punt return; and Woodson, whose transcendent performance delivered a win over OSU and a National Championship. To find the last of the true greats, we have to go all the way back to Brady and Woodson--the heroic age--and that is a damn shame.

One that gets first down…

One that gets first down after first down, breaks your back by converting long third downs, and scores points.

Concur. The French 75 is a terrific year-round cocktail. Also hits the History notes as it is named after the 75mm "soixante-quinze" field gun that was instrumental in saving France from defeat in the First World War.

I wonder what Paul Manafort,…

I wonder what Paul Manafort, who spent his holidays in federal prison, would say about your specious claim of “no evidence.” Or Michael Cohen, or Butina, or Flynn, or Papadopolous.....

Russia is the enemy, not Ohio State. In 2019 I hope we deal Putin & his oligarchs a defeat.

Need to transcend M football. It is painful to watch them more often than it is enjoyable to watch them.

We suck, but at least that purple-faced fucker was smoked on national tv.

Disagree. If class after class is going to lose to Ohio State all four years and also lose to ND, good teams fielded by PSU, Wisconsin, and Iowa...might as well emphasize the student- in student-athlete and give them an edifying experience.

I feel the same about the…

I feel the same about the Michigan football I grew up with as the America I grew up in. What was once a source of great pride, with talented people doing extraordinary things, has turned into a steaming pile of shit, with mediocrities making millions to deliver nothing of value, nothing to celebrate, and nothing to take pride in. What a shame.

Let Dan fucking Mullen kick…

Let Dan fucking Mullen kick the shit out of us again. Fuck Michigan football forever. Fuck it. Fucking loser coaches will lose five games next year. Fucking hideous to watch.

2018: at close to 50, thankful for good physical & mental health—hot yoga & running.

2019: looking forward to the survival of democracy & the rule of law.

For me, an exceptional public university is better than a training ground for investment bankers.

2016 can do so as well.

2016 can do so as well.

There is corruption at the…

There is corruption at the state level, as well. Just look at the Michigan Republicans' post-election grab for power. That is an overt and anti-democratic corruption of the will of the electorate.

The head of the team trying…

The head of the team trying to break the Imperial Japanese Naval code was Captain Joe Rochefort, who was devastated by his failure to prevent the Pearl Harbor attack. He and his team broke the code the following summer, and the Navy was able to track with great accuracy the Japanese aircraft carrier task force heading toward Midway island. Military historian John Keegan calls this the greatest intelligence coup in the history of naval warfare. At the Battle of Midway, Navy pilots destroyed FOUR Japanese aircraft carriers. Dive-bomber pilot Dusty Kleiss himself had direct hits on two of the carriers. Much bloody fighting remained, but just months after Pearl Harbor, the tide had turned.

An incredible life of public…

An incredible life of public service to be sure. But by choosing Clarence Thomas to fill the Thurgood Marshall seat on the Supreme Court, HW allowed his political ideology to take precedence over what was in the best long-term interest of that institution.

Among the growing army of…

Among the growing army of players to never beat Ohio State.

Who cares?

Who cares?

My Michigan football…

My Michigan football watching season was over before it really started--it's just too painful to watch them suck that bad at the same things four years deep into what was supposed to be a glorious renaissance. During games, I'll be watching the highlights from that Stanford-Virginia Tech Orange Bowl on youtube.

Michigan is like Minnesota…

Michigan is like Minnesota after its run of football glory in the early decades of the 20th century. Michigan football is a decade and a half deep into mediocrity and irrelevance, with no end in sight (don't win big games = can't recruit stars), and we are having trouble letting go. It's over. It's been over.

Braylon made plays when it…

Braylon made plays when it counted. Who was the last player to do that? Henne couldn’t beat OSU, Denard was comically miscast as a QB. He’s heartsick and I don’t fault him for saying it: Michigan is an irrelevant, middling college football team. It hurts to finally have to accept that, but it’s true. The era from 1969-1997 is closed. Not going to return.

Eight, nine years ago I…

Eight, nine years ago I stopped putting out my M flag. Seven years ago, i stopped listening to the fight song before the season. I stopped seeing games with Boston alumni club (all losses). Last year I stopped watching hype videos. Last year I didn’t watch OSU game. This year I won’t watch MSU or OSU. Whether they beat WMU or Indiana...who cares? We watch to see them beat ND, MSU, OSU. They cannot do that anymore.

Come for the subpar position…

Come for the subpar position coaching; stay for the 8-5 records!

Terrible cycle. Poor OL play…

Terrible cycle. Poor OL play for a decade and and half prevents program from attracting enough blue-chip OL talent; sub-Bo OL prevents team from beating rivals. Rinse and repeat. Give it up. It’s over. Learn a language, take up an instrument. Root for a college that fields a nationally relevant, winning program or just venerate UM because it’s a tremendous institution.

If they had some better…

If they had some better players and better coaching, they would not lose as many games.

Really stoked for the WMU…

Really stoked for the WMU game! If you can’t win against decent teams on the road and you can’t beat your rivals, bring on WMU, Toledo, and UMass.

Exactly. Third & long,…

Exactly. Third & long, opponent QB chucks it up, receiver makes great catch. Or QB makes perfect throw. Or QB barely eludes defenders to reach sideline for 1st down. Third & long for Michigan: ugly sack, dropped pass, or overthrown ball. Twenty fucking years of this hideousness.

The whole Michigan football…

With one or two seasons excepted, when Bo left, the nationally good teams left with him. The joy is gone, just misery watching Michigan football. It breaks my heart, but the thing we loved is no longer. It’s over.

I hope Warinner can teach…

I hope Warinner can teach how to recognize/defend against stunts--if the OL can do that, could be quite a year.

The upcoming trade war over

The upcoming trade war over steel oughtta really help!

Winning at all costs In 2016-17 we all are getting a good look at what it means to live in a win-at-all-cost culture, in which defeating the adversary is the only end, even if that means ignoring or subverting decades (or centuries) of institutional protocol.
0-4 against Ohio State. Henne 0-4 against Ohio State. Henne was the QB who started the late Carr/RR/Hoke hell.
Caring and Competence

The utter lack of competence in the last two years of the Hoke era--allowing Rutgers to pass for 408 yards!--is, to me, irreconcilable with really caring about the team and the men on the team.  For professionals, if you care about something, you execute it with a degree of competence and often with excellence.  The shameful collapse of the football team over the last two years prevents me from lauding Hoke because he allegedly cared deeply about Michigan.  I care deeply about Michigan, as all of us do.  Hoke, however, owed it to the team, to the alums and to the University to prepare the team each week to win football games.
