It's a reference to Jim Harbaugh's introductory press conference:

"You don't compare, especially you don't compare great to great....because somebody always gets diminished when you do that."

You shouldn't compare great…

You shouldn't compare great to great, but this is one of the most wonderful pieces to grace this website.

Maryland will (likely) have…

Maryland will (likely) have a couple by the end of the year. UMD already has 4 national championships since joining which is impressive.

I went to Maryland for undergrad. Most of the other suggestions will be difficult to get to with traffic.

Here are some places I recommend within walking distance of the stadium.

- Lunch: The Board and Brew (sandwiches, coffee), Sweetgreen (a salad bowl chain), Looney's, Vigilante Coffee (one of the best coffee roasters in the mid-Atlantic).

- Bars - Bentleys (will get very busy), Cornerstone, or Looney's

Maryland fans don't really care too much about the football team winning. These games are an opportunity to get together with friends and family. The Maryland area sends tons of kids to elite colleges like UM - I think everyone should be very cordial and inviting.

Unfortunately, many of the comments re: the campus are correct. The amount of construction is obscene, but many of the new buildings are state-of-the-art. I recommend going to the Mall and going to visit the Frederick Douglass statue.

I hope everyone has a great time!

Looneys is not that far away. Vigilante Coffee also has really good coffee.

Seth:

Thank you for all the hard work you and the team have done. Will backers of the physical copy receive a pdf version? I wasn't aware that it was available on Kindle and would like to read on my device.

Best wishes and have a lovely holiday weekend.

Looneys

That's the shortest walk to a bar from Xfinity. It's filled more with alumni so it'll be less crazy.

I meant the lower ring using this map (thank you for clarifying)

Recommendations from a UMD grad

I don't know of any set Michigan tailgate spots but I expect it to be interspersed as Maryland doesn't assign tailgate spots logically or by team.

Where to eat?

It depends, if you have time before the game I would recommend going to the new restaurants under Maryland's 4 star hotel (this is new as of the 2015 game)

https://www.thehotelumd.com/

Maryland's golf course club is also not bad for food.

Best place to sit

Don't go to the lower bowl as your view will be obstructed by the players. Aim for the middle "ring" of seating.

Maryland traditions

I would recommend visiting the mall as it's the largest in the country by length. Additionally, the Maryland creamery is pretty neat.

Our main tradition is putting our flag on everything so be prepped for that

Recommended Stops

Maryland's main appeal is its proximity to DC. The College Park metro is on the green line and will take you into Washington D.C. Check that out after the game if you want a nicer dining option or just to explore.

I went to Maryland for

I went to Maryland for undergrad. There is no way that any of the "statistics" cited are representative of the fanbase at large. We love D.J. Durkin and have high hopes for the future but nowhere near the level that these articles expound. I think most of my buddies and I would be happy with 9-3 or 8-4 seasons with the occassional 11-2 being a once in a decade thing.

All these articles are a horrible look for the Maryland fanbase. They're written by fanboys. We know we're not on the level academically of Michigan and Northwestern, to say otherwise shows a shocking lack of self-awareness. We've made dramatic progress in academics (the incoming SAT scores are above average in the B10) and athletics. We've added an enormous boost to the conference in soccer, lacrosse, and basketball.

We're not Rutgers, thank goodness

I suggested a work field trip

I suggested a work field trip for the "emotional well-being of the employees"

Didn't go over so well....

$6 dollar tickets....FML

DC Michigan Fan

I work a mile away from the Verizon Center but the 12:00 time screws me. Incredibly irritating

Kind of lame for Hoke to not

Kind of lame for Hoke to not comment positively on a former player. It's not like it would hurt Oregon or him.

I couldn't agree more. I

I couldn't agree more. I jokingly make fun of Ohio State but that's more joking hatred. I legitimately hate Penn State. Their continued lack of contrition flies in the face of their "oh that's only a couple fans who can't let go" argument.

Maryland Football Gameday Experience

I actually attended UMD. I grew up in Ann Arbor and so the move to the Big Ten causes me to be an emotional wreck when UMD and MI play each other.  I'll give you the best guide/novel since this will be most people's first time and can guide future road trips.

Public Transportation:

Easily accessible via the College Park Metro on the green line (2nd to last stop before Greenbelt). From there it is about a 25 minute walk through old College Park and Frat Row. It's a reasonably nice walk and you'll get to see alot of the Greek life tailgates.

If you're wanting to drive, I would recommend driving to the Greenbelt metro and parking there. Just take the metro one more stop and you'll save yourself the headache of traffic

Bars

RJ Bentleys- If you want to get the quintessential Maryland experience you can't do better than Bents

Cornerstone- 2nd best

Looneys- chain bar so nothing particularly unique but older crowd

Our golf course has a bar and is within walking distance. You should head there if you're more into the sophisticated crowd.

Blaze- the Chipotle of pizza. Check it out

Gameday Experience

It's going to be hot. Very hot. Be prepared to see the southern side of Maryland when you see the gals wearing sundresses and guys wearing polos. However, most of Maryland is New Jersey south so feel prepared for that element.

We also just got beer service at the games. Aim for the local brews and you won't be disappointed. Heavy Seas is a good solid gameday beer.

Ending

You'll have a good time at Maryland if you have the right mindset. Don't stray too far from campus as it can get rough. Maryland's ODK mall should provide some great photos for your trip
