My daughter was one of the 116 on that plane. Two takeaways - sometimes you just got to trust your gut, the book be damned. And, hold your babies tight. Nothing else would be worth the loss.
During their first year, each month on the date of their birth, MGoWife took about 3-4 minutes of video of them doing whatever they were doing - crawling/climbing/walking/gurgling/pointing/etc. When you look back 10-15-now, 25 years later, you won't believe the growth/changes that take place.during their first year.
And I had graduated 8th grade and was 12. I worked for my buddy's dad who operated a trophy business out of his basement. It was a Friday and I snuck two Olympia's out of the fridge for my mile walk home. Buzzzzz
I'm 53 and pro sports has waned over the years, but I've redeployed the time to more closely following high school and now college sports. My kids schools have blessed me with A caliber football and basketball teams to follow since 2008.
We drive in from Chicago the morning of each game. We sit in a specific section within a specific set of rows. We always buy on StubHub the night prior or before we hit the road in the morning. By then, ticket holders know they will not be in attendance and they'll drop prices at specific times (hint, midnight Eastern). You don't want to mess with StubHub, SeatGeek or whatever in the hours right before game time. With 150K in the AA area at that time, trying to get an internet connection on a cell phone, even with WiFi, is typically a no go. Try sending a text while tailgating on the golf course...it may go through by mid-second quarter.
Thanks for posting, Ben. As a Chicagoan, what a treat to watch him night in and night out...couldn't even begin to count the number of opposing jocks he left on the Stadium/UC floor.
Born and raised in Chicago and know plenty of Illinois grads. They can't explain it either. The "rivalry" will be renewed October 22, 2016 for Homecoming.
And the Wiki page now reads, "The rivalry dates back to 1898 and features one of the most prominent programs..." Nicely done.
We stay at a Marriott property in Livonia (there are three varieties). The Marriott Livonia is $129/night for a double as of posting. It's a 25 minute drive to Central Campus.
Yes, make dinner reservations if you can. Even for Friday night. The scarlett horde needs to eat too.
Yes, get to Revelli Hall 90-minutes pre-kick for the Drumline Stepshow and MMB march to the stadium.
Yes, go to your seats quickly thereafter and enjoy the atmosphere.
Yes, be surprised by the reverb created by the 55,000 fans from the other side of the Big House.
Let's put it this way, I know several suburban Chicago kids with 27-29 ACT's, 4.0+ GPA's with plenty of other attributes getting declined, depending upon the school to which they apply. UofI has taken heat for it too.
U of I has become VERY selective regarding in-state candidates and really like receiving out-of-state tuition. Hence, more suburban Chicagoan's attend Iowa as there is no other public school in Illinois of note. Iowa is to MSU as U of I is to, well...not really but you get the point. Plus, Urbana is a hole.
I saw almost every one of JJ's high school games. He's the sixth leading rusher in Illinois HS history (1st in 8A, the largest school category & competed in the 2nd best conference). While not blessed with top-end speed, his strengths are vision, ability to cut and incredible heart. Really the only reasons he had a good freshman year. He was disappointed that Hoke showed no interest. Looking forward to seeing him in the Big House.

Anybody else catch the hand warmers flying from the punters pouch after the shank? Hilarious.
I'll take a bangin', please.
Not in the CWS.
