I have been to all those places during and after college.

Illinois is definitely up there. Maybe not #1, but likely top 5. So this poll isn't too surprising to me.

Kam's (a bar at Illinois) lets you in if you are 18, but you can't drink. Yea, right!

Every girl I know that went to ASU (3) had a dad that was in construction, had dough but trash, partied all thru high school and was either headed to community college or did a year in community college before crying to her dad that she wanted to go to ASU.

Outside of the tiny in-state LAS—e.g. Alma, Albion—I've never not had a good time partying at a college. Academics and party scene are not mutually exclusive. I will say the easier it is to get into a school the trashier the behavior and more likely you're going to have unsavory townies and sketchy "cousins" visiting (e.g. MSU, CMU). Southern Cal is interesting in that it's quite obvious 80% of the football crowd has no affiliation with the University. My times there the party scene was 1) Greek, period 2) Bottle service at some West Hollywood nightclub.

I imagine if you're going to keep this list fresh, you have to find a way to juggle the rankings around a bit.  If your top rankings are always Arizona St., Wisconsin, Florida St, etc. folks will stop paying attention to your list.

always found my interest in "parties" to be too subjective to rank in this way.  I find that the schools that are listed really high are ranked as they are due to like volume and size of said parties and also the kind of crowd you find at the bars and parties.  Like conventional wisdom is that State is a much better party school than UM and I have had some interesting nights at both locations, but State is a hastle, there is pressure to go to five locations in one night with less than compatible crowds and to just get more and more wasted even when you have reached diminishing returns.  I prefer the atmospheres where you know what you like, you go there and you have a great time with your crowd.

I think State is the de facto party school because everyone knows people that go there. Outside of the top 10 prime public high schools, the average high school in Michigan only sends a handful (if that) to UofM. State draws easily a dozen kids from nearly every public, if not literally half the graduates of Troy, Novi, Forest Hills. I don't think State is in any way "crazier" than UofM, I just think more kids have access to their parties. And familiarity can aid in a party being more enjoyable e.g. "Omg I saw so many people I knew!"

but State is "crazier" than UM on balance.  Not that things don't get wild in Ann Arbor, but on any given night in East Lansing you see three to four people completely lose their shit, one fight a minimum, passed out naked in the yard guy(just once if you are lucky), and puke is almost always part of the equation as is some form of law enforcement.

So when I say "crazier" it is not necessarily a positive description to me (while I think it is a postive point in the rankings), hence, the subjectivity of the rankings.  I prefer "wild" as to "crazy."  My nights in A2 have been wild, my nights in Lansing have been crazy in the sense that I am glad when they are over.

When I was in high school there was an alarmingly large group of girls who, as soon as some of them were old enough to drive, would pile in a couple cars every weekend and drive right past Ann arbor, an extra hour one-way, out to east lansing to get drunk with college guys/ older siblings at State. I told them a couple times to at least be sure they all stayed together.

party judging is super subjective.  But I had no idea Iowa is a party school.  Maybe because there's nothing to do there once the corn fields are mowed down??

I can see it being one of the best party schools, but the TOP one? I dunno... In their defense, once you get outside the city limit, there's nothing there, so the only thing to do IS drink, so....

that there are no southern schools on the list.  Maybe the party down south moves off campus more often than not.   Not a scientific study by any means also not a distinction you want as a university.

I think their could be a few reasons for this: The South is pretty religious. There are spots in the Midwest and Northeast that are pretty religious, however in the South, most people have been to church at least once. While I would say the quality of religion in the South is subpar (i.e. gay hating, country club feel, and a lot of feel-good megachurches) the quantity of religion is pretty high. This might limit some partying. Because of this resulting conservatism, law enforcement can come down hard on drinking. Also antiquated liquor laws exist. For example, in my school's state, liquor stores have to close on Sunday, and most non liquor store retailers can only sell beer that is under four percent alcoholic content. Most of the partying gets done at tailgate, which is a much bigger deal down here than in Big 10 country.

I don't know, I visited U of I recently and was shocked. Something like 50% or more of the student population is involved in Greek life, and it was definitely more active than I expected

is entirely subjective.  It all depends on what sort of party you're talking about.  Your MSU type state schools have a lot of dudebros doing beer bongs and puking on the street.

Top end schools have excellent cocaine and parties with an "Eyes Wide Shut" type of dynamic.  Smart, beautiful people, indulging in all the pleasures of the flesh.
