You can *definitely* make a case for Tom Brady here. Does anyone remember his debut against Notre Dame in 1998? He took three sacks because he was a statue with no pocket presence. Compare that to the Orange Bowl win against Alabama and he didn't seem like the same player.

I met Andrew Gentry's…

I met Andrew Gentry's parents and sister at the Denver airport last weekend. I was wearing a Michigan shirt and a couple near me made eye contact and then said "Go Blue" and asked if I was a big fan. I said I was, that I had a Michigan degree, and that I had just dropped a daughter off there to start her freshman year.

They said that they were going to Ann Arbor this coming Saturday because their son was on the football team. I asked what their son's name was and they said, "Andrew Gentry." I immediately recognized the name and said, "Oh sure, he played at Columbine." They then volunteered that Gentry was practicing a lot at guard. This surprised me because I thought he was strictly tackle-shaped and so I asked if he was practicing more at guard than at tackle and they said yes.

Anyway, I thought that was interesting. Very nice couple and family. Apparently, his sister is a D1 basketball prospect and they were just returning from a recruiting visit. She must have been at least 6'2" and nearly as tall as the dad. They also said that Andrew "absolutely loves Michigan."

If your kids go to high school in Michigan, then they should qualify for in-state tuition. If they don't go to in-state high schools, it's pretty difficult to establish residency. Basically, you have to demonstrate that you have made Michigan your permanent residence independent of attending U-M. I think a general rule of thumb is that you need to live and work in Michigan without attending college there for at least a year and they might still consider where the student's parents live. Anyway, here are the residency FAQs: https://ro.umich.edu/tuition-residency/residency

Thanks for the tips! I went to law school at Michigan, so undergrad housing is definitely new ground for me. Go Blue!

I move my daughter (UM grad 2027--fingers crossed) into Mary Markley on Friday. My ex is moving her twin sister to London for Northeastern's global scholars program next week. I have four kids and did finally end up with one going to Michigan. Out-of-state tuition is going to kill me though.

I hadn’t heard about Lamer entering the portal. That really does suck. I knew the recruiting class was really good, but was hoping they could all redshirt.

That seems likely to me. Griffith appears to be a bigger 165 pounder than Amine. I also wonder about Cannon and Ragusin--which one will bump up to 141? So the line-up would be this?

125 – DeAugustino

133 – Cannon/Ragusin

141 – Cannon/Ragusin

149 – Lamer

157 – Lewan? (he must have a year of Covid eligibility left)

165 – Amine

174 – Griffith

184 – Bullock

197 – Rogers

285 – Davison

I'm a long-time reader rare poster too and I just barely overlapped with Bo--my first year at Michigan was Bo's last as head coach. I generally agree with your assessment of the coaches, but I'm not sure that RichRod having a competent defensive coordinator would have mattered a lot against Ohio State. It seemed like his offenses worked against everyone except Ohio State.

Separately, did anyone else notice in the pregame on Saturday that Ohio State broke a huddle near midfield and a bunch of Buckeyes were flipping the bird at Michigan, including Dawand Jones, another #79 (like Marcus Hall), with a double bird? I've been trying to find an image of that (I didn't record the pregame) because it would be a great "how it started, how it ended" with Dawand Jones leaving the field in tears at the end of the game. The only reference at all I could find was on Buckeye message board: https://forums.theozone.net/messages/41700.html

Totally agree with buying a field hockey stick and learning to play with your daughter. My daughter played through high school and it's a fun sport. And agree with watching UM games too. This was a few years ago, but we flew to Michigan, saw a field hockey game in the morning, a noon football game, and volleyball match in the evening. My daughter was in middle school and a girl from the high school she eventually went to was Michigan's captain at the time.

I just was checking the UM roster to see if there were any Colorado girls on the team (there weren't), but I just noticed that the daughter of Sean Bormet (all-american wrestler at Michigan and current head coach) is on the field hockey team.

Great writing, Kelsey!

He's a B1G Champ wrestler insofar as he is on the team and the team won the B1G tournament this past season. He only wrestled unattached in one tournament.

@Seth -- there's a typo in the text of the Brooklyn live event: it should be "Dram Shop" rather than "Dream Shop."

You bet! I wonder who came up with the "Sir Francis" moniker, but it did seem fitting. For many years, I had a Sports Illustrated cover on my bulletin board with Tarkenton on it with the caption, "He's Frantastic!"

That list certainly dates me, and yes, the Vikings were an early passion for me. Both Tarkenton and Page were fun to watch. And in the "cool story, bro" category: I overlapped briefly with Alan Page at the Minnesota Attorney General's office before he was elected to the MN Supreme Court. I ended up standing next to him in line for cake at a monthly birthday celebration and was absolutely awestruck when he introduced himself to me and I got to shake his hand.

In the Black & Gold game, the sections at Kinnick alternate black and gold so that you have black and gold stripes in the stadium. It does look cool.

Unless you were being…

Unless you were being sarcastic, I think that Erik did properly use "whom" in that sentence. The general rule is that "who" functions as a subject and "whom" functions as an object. Because "whom" is the receiver of the action in that sentence and not the doer of the action, it's an object and "whom" is correct.

It doesn't really matter,…

It doesn't really matter, but Seth did link to the niblings video to explain relationships and it probably feels more like an uncle-nephew relationship because Braylon is twenty years older, but the relationship is first cousins.

Given that Micah Pollard's…

Given that Micah Pollard's mom and Braylon's mom are sisters, aren't Micah and Braylon first cousins rather than nephew-uncle?

It isn't just that the Court's most conservative members are critical, but when notoriously-silent-from-the-bench Justice Thomas feels compelled to speak, things aren't going well.
