My school has been pushing for more outdoor education even before COVID. Our PE classes have been held largely outdoors all year. Teachers try to get their kids outside for lessons all year too, but some things are not practical when it is wet, snowy or super hot. For all those people commenting on how kids today are pussies, how many office workers would be willing to work outside 7 hours in the rain/snow/heat. What equipment would you need to make that work? Are you willing to pay for that to make the same solutions work in schools? I’m guessing they wouldn’t do much better.
I may be in the minority on a sports blog, but with schools facing as much as 20-30% cuts, sports are among the first things that should be cut. The latest Bridge article is looking grim.
Teaching live lessons that are simultaneously recorded is more difficult than it sounds, at least in elementary where very few lessons are taught as lecture. Most learning in my school is inquiry based or project based beyond math class. I am sure these can be done online, but the format would look different than you suggested. Perhaps you could introduce the problem and give the readings in both formats, but the hands on portions are super challenging to do remotely unless you use the most basic of supplies, and collaborating over zoom is a huge new skill set for kids to learn. Again some of this can be done but doing it well will take a lot of trial and error. This generation of learners will come out with very different skillsets than the ones before, both positive and negative.
Responsibility of a 13 year old vs 20 something is a big difference. Also most college students do not lack high speed internet. This crisis really highlights the economic divide in our country.
I work in elementary Ed in Michigan, and we have been told that there are many plans being discussed for next year including smaller class sizes, staggering class times, combination of distance and in person learning, and here is the strangest kicker- flat funding or even decreasing funding by 10-15 percent. Those things cannot all go together, so I guess what I am saying is everything is on the table for next fall at this point.
Michigan rolls in the second half as Higdon and Patterson break their will with a long time consuming 80 yard drive sandwiched between two OSU 3 and outs. Gentry though is the player of the game getting key 3rd down completitions while the game is still in doubt.
