Zavier Simpson appreciation thread

This guy is phenomenal. I can't believe how far he has come. Many didn't believe in him. He is going to be GREAT! Great win! Go Blue!

Shaking my head. Free throws, 3 point shots, for both Z and Matthews. What a stinker of a game. Maddening. Michigan will get absolutely slaughtered if they play that way vs. OSU and in the 4 road games. This season could end very badly. Live by the 3, die by the 3. Already, I am not happy looking to Mo and Rahkman leaving the team.

No one deserves an appreciation thread after that performance. Narrowly avoided a killer loss to a team that's spent the last month or so getting blown out by pretty much everyone.

I find it hard to imagine anyone on the team deserving an appreciation thread after that game. I’m not mad. They’re kids playing a game. It’s all entertainment, not life or death. But they should’ve lost today.

I hope Beilein can bring Stauskas and Walton in to facilitate a free throw workshop.

You don't see a lot of appreciation threads that get a 2 upvote, 15 downvote starts save for the sarcastic ones after football losses in which there is debate about certain players giving their all.

Well done, MGoBlog!

Well done? That's a pretty ridiculous statement. Sorry for trying to bring light to a guy who was left for dead by alot of our fanbase and oh by the way had more than half our points in ot. Maybe my personal attachment to him shined through a bit, but saying well done to dvotes on an appreciation thread for someone who deserves it is rather odd.

Significantly slowed down Minn.offense by going to zone (took Brando & Elmore 5 possessions before they noticed) and took ball out of Matthews hands in 2nd half and ran everything thru Mo Wagner then ran pnr with Z or MAAR & Wagner.Classic case of a coach making adjustments when team shooting poorly from outside, missing FT's and guards unable to defend their guards.Whoever the OP is it's clear their knowledge of basketball is limited.

Yes he made some big plays but he also chucked up one missed 3 after another after another after another..I think he finally made one their late but that was it AND he misses ALOT of layups and do NOT want him shooting Free throws in late game situations...just call it as I see it

I fear this team wil always be limited with Simpson at PG.  If he can't make FTs and can't make threes, the offensive advantage Beilein relies upon at the 4 and 5 is largely nullified.

I’m not going to shit on my own team. He isn’t perfect, but made enough plays when it mattered most. He has come a long way in the last year. That steal and assist to Robinson was huge!

I don't know how much was Z and how was the rest of the team and/or Minnesota, but the offense really felt ponderous today.   While I'm sure that this is based on not getting open looks earlier in the clock, but one I've noticed is how often we use the entire shot clock before launching a 3 or attacking the rim with less than 10 seconds left.  I almost would want them to take a so-so shot with 15-20 seconds on the clock to keep the other team's defense honest.

This is a dumb thread, but it's also a bit of a downer that everyone is shitting on Simpson as well.  It wasn't a great game by him, but nobody had a particularly good performance either.  This team is definitely a step behind other Beilien teams offensively, but there defense is solid and has won them a couple of games this year.  And Simpson has definitely been a solid defender this season, and that hasn't fluctuated too much this year.

has to start trusting one of the backups though. Brooks and Simmons are more of a threat to hurt teams from deep right now. Simpson is seriously a “self-check” at this moment. We need to be playing a point that can shoot a little bit for some stretches. Simpson should play 30 minutes, but not like 38.

In the last 4 games, Simmons has played a total of 26 minutes and has scored 8 points, with 4 TOs, 5 fouls, and 1 assist.  Some of those fouls were intentional, but Simmons has shown nothing offensively at this point to justify continued playing time; he hasn't hit a 3 since playing against UNC, and I assume that he has struggled in practice as well.  Brooks I could see getting a couple of minutes, but he was giving co-starter minutes to begin the year and played himself out of the rotation.  I'm sure Beilein would love to play a guy other than Simpson 38 minutes a game, and maybe he'll go to a MAAR/Poole or MAAR/Matthews backcourt at times to spell Simpson, but at some point Simpson is just the best guy you have at the spot and even if he's a "self-check", he's still better than your other options.

I would hope that Brooks gets a little more run if possible; Simmons has seemingly forgotten how to play basketball and probably isn't worth investing much more time in given the time in the season and his situation as a 5th-year transfer.  I hate doing that because he seems like a good guy who is trying, but other than a couple of minutes here or there it really doesn't seem like you can put him out there and it be even average performance.

What people don't realize is how valuable his leadership on the court is. Those who know Zavier, know this is his best asset. I'm guessing JB realizes this and that is why he is getting 38 minutes instead of 30 and yes the two behind him obviously aren't world beaters.

are going to need quality backup PG minutes or it is going to be a short post season. Simpson plays a ton right now because he is a good leader and plays very good defense, but he isn’t a consistent enough offensive threat to play essentially wire to wire. One of the other guys, seemingly Brooks, needs to become a more steady part of the rotation and need to shoot the ball from time to time.

Simmons is a non factor. Unfortunately. Brooks is going to be a good player. He needs time. Simpson is the best way. Need him out there as much as possible. I love the way he drive's the ball to the bucket. Looks to me that Jordan might be the best option to give Z a breather and let MAAR run the point and rotate those three dude's throughout the game's upcoming 11 for 27 from the charity stripe. Horrible.

Not sure he’s “phenomenal” but he has been clutch. I’d like to see him take his man off the dribble more and not to be captain obvious: HIT HIS FT’S!!

TheBlueAbides

He would have lost 4-5 more games without him, but he really has to figure out the free throws, as do others. It can be costly to have a PG can’t shoot FTs down the stretch as we have all learned. That said go Z and Go Blue!

What are you talking about? I will give him credit- he has a short memory and is a fighter but dude needs to learn to stop shooting until he is even average

ijohnb

is the problem. He can’t “not shoot.” An offense where the PG doesn’t shoot a wide open 3 earned from a well executed possession and good ball movement is no offense at all. He can’t not shoot wide open 19 foot Js. They are must-take shots. I took some flack above for this but we need to find away to get another shot oriented point some minutes.
