Youssef Khayat

Submitted by Ceal on November 17th, 2022 at 2:00 AM

So I am a big Michigan Basketball fan, but have been in my own little world while out of state for work the past few months.   I have only been able to look at box scores, and not watch any of the games.   Whats going on with Youssef Khayat?   Is he hurt?  Not up to speed yet with the transition from Lebanon?   Is he even on the bench?    I was kinda excited to at least see how he was doing early on and don't see his name in any box score, or find any recent information in a google search.

Thanks to any with some insight, and hope he can hit the court soon?

Well, don't be surprised if you get surprised in this regard. He is coming from a very great distance-by multiple definitions, and has only been with the team for several months. The clips of his play show him to be both a confident and talented young man. We will see-here, I am much more hopeful than concerned.

While he draws a lot of comparisons to Franz in terms of his game, maybe Mo is a better hope for trajectory. His freshman year Mo averaged 2.9 points on 8 minutes a game. And he barely got in in November/December.

There's some transition that needs to take place here. The guys who are paid to watch international hoopers like Khayat's potential. That along with this coaching and training staff, are enough for me to feel optimistic about his longterm outlook. Even if the short term and instant gratification aren't likely.

The OP should be banned from posting during the football season, just for how wrong he got the Minter hire.  Seriously...

”Not really sure how any can be *excited* about this hire. Kinda screams desperation to me. All I can do is HOPE he ends up being what we need.

One of the best Universities in THE WORLD, and zero WOW factor. :( “

I think people forget he hasn't been on campus very long. Missed all of the summer stuff playing for his national team.

Saw him up close last night.  Physically, he looks ready to go (very strong), but as someone else said on here, he seems like he needs to get used to the speed of the game (which feels weird for someone who has played at a pretty high level prior to coming to Michigan).

To me it looked like he was overwhelmed by the moment of his first college minutes, in NYC, bright lights big city etc. The turnover was him trying to do too much all at once and his feet going out from under him.

If we want to read way too much into something, there was a fast break where Yo Yo got to the corner 3 spot correctly but didn't receive the pass. Juwan took time to acknowledge that he was in the right place at the right time and to just keep doing that.

The Mo Wagner comparisons are heartening, hoping Khayat kheats up in the new year.

Was at the game last night.  He didn't look too confident out there but it was his very first minutes in NCAA.  The only time he got the ball on the wing he attempted a rip through and drive and immediately fell over and walked. He looks the part though - lengthy and athletic.  Needs a little more time in the oven.

I guess I don't follow the team as closely as you all. I had the same question as OP. Last I checked this summer he was a big pick up and likely to contribute in some capacity this year. Looking at box scores that hasn't been the case, hence the question.

Yes, I'm sure you could google around and/or check other sites, but why are people so protective of topics like this being raised?

Even in his brief cameos you can see the potential in Khayyat.  But you can also see that he's not ready to be a meaningful contributor.  Remains to be seen if he takes the Barnes/Tschetter route from last year and just practices and works out to get bigger/stronger, or whether he gets garbage time minutes.  If I were guessing (and it's only a guess), I'd go with the former, since he has quite a bit of playing experience for a young guy.

Yeah, I would say it means a lot to reach out to some that I respect and be negged 51 times for asking a question I can't answer due to my life.    Thanks M fam.   I really respect and now understand why some feel the way they do.   Kinda ashamed to think that others in the same University I love show so much hate.

Sorry I don't meet your standards of questions living a life that allows me to do little more than my priorities.
