Your Early Thoughts on Michigan vs. Nebraska?

Submitted by MaizeBlueA2 on November 8th, 2022 at 3:40 AM

MSU week is over, Rutgers is over...on to the next.

Michigan vs. Nebraska, 3:30pm on ABC.

Early thoughts? Expectations?

It sounds like a number of the guys (Hayes, Green, etc.) who were held out against Rutgers will be ready (although Keegan may sit this one - IMO, he absolutely should to be ready for the last two).

On one hand, as a child:

Born in Nebraska. My dad worked at the University. My first football game in Nebraska's stadium.

On the other hand, now I am a man:

MICHIGAN!

I've said for a few weeks now for all of the folks crying about passing (while we have a great OL and a Hesiman level RB)...THIS is the game I circle to get JJ going.

For a few reasons:

  1. Corum needs a light week to be ready for the last two where he could get 30-35 carries.  Let's get him some early touches, but highlight Edwards like we did against Maryland last year.  This is also the game for Stokes to get out of the doghouse from his fumble and get 10 carries of his own.
  2. Nebraska gives up a lot of passing yards.
  3. Nebraska's defense can't really rush 4 and play a shell...they'll never get a pass rush and they'll give up 10 ypc. They're light. I think they have to pick their poison and they seem to pick stopping the run because if they don't...Corum goes for 250. They're especially light on the edge, those guys need help in run support.  If they're committing guys to the run...JJ and WRs, it's finally your time.

Hayes and Green are said to be back but Keegan has been banged up all year and left the Rutgers game with what looked like a sprained ankle. Sit him. El-Hadi can go at LG.

Persi looked solid, but if Hayes is healthy, I see no reason not to play him while you try to get up big (although that's not our first half MO).

At WR, getting Roman Wilson back would be huge. We need someone to stretch the defense vertically.  I'd love to see JJ throw 25 times before sitting the 4th quarter (I'm not saying he will, Nebraska message board... I'm saying, I'd love if it were to happen).

Defensively, dominate. I think Casey Thompson is a serviceable QB, but their weapons are limited and their interior OL is, well, not great. Mazi Smith and Kris Jenkins should eat and eat well. Also, if you're stopping the run and making them one deminsonal, the pass rush suddenly gets better.

Getting Green back is huge, and Nebraska doesn't have any basketball WRs that play a lot...so hopefully this is a confidence builder before playing the best WR group in the country.

In all, I like this game for Michigan. Nebraska seems to lend itself to the things Michigan needs to work on and improve before the final two.

I have no idea...and I'm guessing Smith-Njigba is back for The Game as well.

As good as Haskins was last year, our DBs were lights out. OSU made their plays, but we still played with them the entire game.

It's going to take an even better effort this time around.

Johnson could be huge, but I'd like to see him do more in man coverage. He hasn't had many of those hip pocket plays that we've seen Turner, Green and Sainristil make.

time to shuck some corn......huskers....

It will be closer than it should be in the first half.... the game thread will be littered with jokers slamming the play calling, offensive coordinators, lack of deep passing game and don brown.   We will pull away and those same jokers will be all like 'bring on ohio state'.

Last year's game was surprisingly tight throughout the 4th quarter, with Nebby being the team that made adjustments, plus what was probably Martinez's best game under center for them last year.  I don't expect that this year, as our overall defense is so much more schooled in the Ravens defensive schemes and will erase the cutback lanes and QB scampers. I think we're going to put them in the hydraulic press and see what squirts out.

Looking forward to seeing who steps up on defense this week. It's been a wide variety of guys making plays on that side of the ball all year. Hoping the o line gets healthy. Not really concerned about the passing game. When you have a dominant run game, the passes will always be available. Good time of year to eat corn.

I expect this team to "dance with the one that brought you" (to a 9-0 record this season, and the B1G / CFP last year).

It's going to be quality of execution, ball security, control both lines of play, and - add a few wrinkles to work on "in-game" timing that can be leveraged in the future.

The team has potentially six (6) more games this season.  One play, series, and game at a time.

If I were to pick a score, it would be 42-27.

Nebraska is a triple digit run defense

I expect Michigan to run run run run. Corum gets 200. Edwards gets 150

JJ will probably go something like 17/25 for 250 and a TD

Michigan 42-7

Assuming the weather is fine, then it will probably be a lot like the Rutgers game. I'm assuming we will attempt some intermediate and deep passing, trying to get that dialed in. There will be a healthy dose of Corum, but I figure Edwards will be more of a feature just as in the Rutgers game. Again, it may be close at the half, but I don't have much concern overall.

Michigan 44, Fighting ex-Scott Frosts 13.

I'd like to see JJ and his WRs work on some longer passes. May be we will be up big during the first half.  IL looks like our possible upset game. In '86 it was MN, in 2016 it was IA, will it be IL in 2022? I hope not, I think if Michigan is playing well we should beat IL by at least 2 TDs.

Before we wait for MGo Weather on Friday, it is looking breezy and cold. Enough for a swirling wind with gusts over 20 mph during the game and temps in the high 30s. If that holds true, I would expect less passing and more running for both teams. That means Michigan will do just fine. As for passing, maybe not the deep ball attempts but JJ should be OK up the slot, cross over and wheel routes.

Keegan looked banged late in the Rutgers game so am not surprised that he may not play. Corum took a few extra hits in those 1yd TD attempts so less carries for him will work. Edwards and CJ Stoke will carry the rock. If we're up big then Dunlap and Gash will do very well.

Maybe we'll have another 400+yd rushing game and could still score 50 on the Cornhuskers.

Ideally, this means Nebraska can't pass and the defense prevents them from running.

I'd like to see Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards play enough to break a sweat then get wrapped up in bubble wrap next to Coach Mike Hart. CJ Stokes gets his oopsies sorted out and develops a solid handle on the ball and goes for 20-25 carries and we see Davis Warren, Orji, and Bowman all get serious time.

And we see once again competitors moving down the single tunnel without incident, sharing stories and catching up.

My expectation is another 300 yard rushing game where we win by 3 tds, but if feels like we could have won by 8 tds.

I will not be disappointed if they end up winning ugly instead, I've seen enough to know this team has a shot at OSU, just need to get to Columbus undefeated.
