You Suck cheer

Submitted by UESWolverine on

Sorry if this is a repeat post - please delete if it is, but how do we eliminate the 'You Suck' cheer?! Am I the only one who cringes every time I hear it? It's really the only negative experience I have at our games.

I knew the dudes who were the weirdo claw zealots. They were trying to replace the standard 'first down' motion, which they thought looked like the FSU/Atlanta Braves chop thing. Had nothing to do with 'you suck' - which does, after all, consist of words and not an arm motion, and did not exist until at least 2005.

It doesn't predate this century.  I was a student from 1998-2002 and no one chanted anything during "Temptation" then.  They just did the arm motion to the MMB's music.  The big debate then was whether to do a fist, a chop, or a "claw."  (The Michigan Daily eventually endorsed the "claw.")

I haven't sat in the student section since '02, so I don't know when exactly it started, but the first time I can remember hearing the chant from my non-student seats was the Appalachian State game.

Personally, I'm not offended by it, but I think it's rather brainless, and I also associate it with a lot of crappy football.

2002 grad here, I left for California in 2004, last game at the Big House was Chris Perry beating Ohio in 2003. As a student, there was no chant during "Temptation". First time I heard the "You suck" chant was the 2007 Rose Bowl, and I thought it sucked. It was never said during the 90s, Kordell Stewart boy is wrong. End this chant. It is stupid and not befitting a school like Michigan.

Good luck getting the student section to stop the cheer... The chant is laughable compared to what is chanted in Yost when the student section there is at it's height, I have no problem with it.

I always thought it was funny because it was intentionally dumb. Is that not the joke? The only time it bothers me is when we do it while the other team is running their field goal unit out.

As a student, it's just fun. I would never say it in a close game or a game when we're losing, but when it's a blowout or a fairly easy win as today, it's fun to be a little arrogant. It unites the student section and pumps people up for the offense to come on. As others have pointed out, it could be much worse and this is pretty tame compared to what other schools have (or even what M hockey has). I'm all about being classy, but not during a game. At that time, the other team can go to hell (without any injuries of course).
