Would Charlie Strong be an upgrade at DC?

Submitted by evenyoubrutus on December 1st, 2019 at 4:28 PM

I truly have no idea, but I saw this talked about in another forum, so I figured I'd bring it up here. I am done with having opinions, tbh, mostly because people in general are assholes and having an opinion means half the people you talk to will hate you for it. So, I'm asking you, smarter people than me, what you think of Charlie Strong?

I'm not claiming to be smarter than you, but to answer directly, no he wouldn't.  If the litmus test for a DC's job security is shutting down an OSU, there are going to be a lot of DC jobs open this off season. The problem is not Xs and Os, its "Jimmys and Joes".

Muschamp’s teams have at least had really good defenses, he just shouldn’t be in charge of a whole team. Charlie’s defenses have been getting smoked for a half decade relentlessly, and he hasn’t been at jobs where he has a big talent disadvantage to his conference like Muschamp at S. Carolina.

The comparisons to other teams’ defenses against OSU is at least partially off the mark. As Urban Meyer has pointed out more than a few times, OSU gears its seasons to the UM game. That means they’re putting things into the offense that other teams don’t see.  Now one can legitimately ask why Michigan isn’t better prepared for those things, but it may just be that OSU’s superior talent moots that issue.  I’d also note that Mattison’s and Washington’s presence may have helped OSU to find holes that wouldn’t be apparent to other coaches not intimately familiar with the Michigan players’ skill sets and tendencies.

Serious question.  Does Don Brown contribute much to recruiting?  If not then we need to bring in someone that can improve in that area.  I think our recruiting is fine as far as talent level, but we have too many gaps, like we are anticipating with the CB group.

No.  The DL is shit.  Undersized and can not get pressure or sustain the LOS.  Until that gets changed in recruiting, the D will get torched by any decent offense.

I don't have a name, but I think we need a DC with an NFL pedigree, who can transition us to a 3-4 team that plays primarily zone.  Our personnel is better suited to a 3-4 at this point because of our lack of DTs, and Paye/Hutchinson being ideal 3-4 DEs, and our depth at linebacker.  We need to play zone because our DBs aren't going to be athletic enough to cover 1-on-1 and because slot ninjas and pick plays have made man coverage obsolete anyway.  Don't know who the next DC is, but the Harbaugh family has a nice rolodex to work from.

I'd take a version of Mattision that's like 25 years younger.  I don't follow the NFL and don't know who the hot position coaches are.  I think our defense needs to look more like Iowa (although I know they're a 4-3).  Nobody scored more than 24 on them all year.  They don't show up at the top of the rankings because they don't smash anybody, but they're great at cover 2 and they don't give up big plays.

Why would you ask me?  I like CharlieStrong but no, he would not be an upgrade.

Offense  has not come close to keeping up in the blowouts.  These are team blowouts.

If Brown goes it will be Jim Leavitt.  He did a good job with the dumpster that was Colorado, made Willie Taggart look good enough that Fla St hired him, and worked with Harbaugh previously.

If it were that easy; change the DC for a presumed better one. I wouldn't be disappointed if Don Brown were to head back east but the answer is more complicated than changing the DC.

Does Michigan really have the talent on their roster to stop an OSU offense? Getting blown out by PSU in 2018 and OSU twice in the past two years plus add that DJ Durkin in Harbs' first season in 2015 tells me there more than a DC change.

Michigan will need better talent plus better coaching to slow down an OSU type offense. Add to that the Michigan offense will need to be just as potent as an LSU or OSU offense just to keep up.

I simply do not understand the logic of "who will do better" or "nobody can shut down OSU's offense"

The defense the last two years against OSU looked worse than pretty much every opponent OSU played, except maybe 2 teams. That's fucking inexcusable for this game

62 points and 56 points shouldn't be accepted. That's Rutgers shit.

Don Brown’s scheme is figured out and he consistently shits the bed vs any team worth a damn. His decision making is idiotic and while I understand it’s not all his fault, multiple key players have degraded every year they’ve started. Hudson, Hill, Metellus(Less so than the first two), etc. time to move on. How a team with two safeties disguised as linebackers gets beaten for big plays so often I’ll never know.

Who knows. Many people here hated the idea of Greg Roman coming with Harbaugh and the guy is the OC of the NFLs top offense in Baltimore. Point being, we aren’t the group to ask, we have no clue.

I don't think any DC was going to prevent OSU from mauling our defense yesterday. What could he possibly have drawn up that was going to save the defensive line without any DTs from getting paved? Maybe a new DC can recruit some beef in the interior. But I don't think a coaching change is going to keep OSU from running over us next year.

He’s one year away from 60. Not that age is inherently a negative, but I would think that the goal would be to get younger minds who can A) relate to the players better, B) get the team fired up and be great on the recruiting trail, and C) bring new, fresh ideas to the table.

Aren’t the defensive issues related to the size of the players on the D line?  It sure looks like that’s the issue to me.  The D line were all recruited as D ends if I recall  correctly.  You can’t coach size, and OSU straight up pushed them around.

My rule of thumb generally is that whoever talks about replacing Don Brown is a moron who knows nothing about this sport. And if you feel that shoe fits, go ahead and downvote me.

One of the hottest names in coaching 10-12 years ago but the game has based him by.  College football isn’t even the same game it was 5 years ago, let alone 10-12. He’s basically like the RichRod of defense at this point.

Strong is more than likely a better coordinator than head coach. Not to mention he's probably fired up knowing he he has to work his way back up the ladder and would love to prove the doubters wrong. And if you nab him, I doubt he leaves for a while because it would take a minute for ADs to buy into him again considering what happened at Texas, and now down in Florida.
