World Cup Day 2 Thread

Submitted by Salinger on

Thought I'd create a thread for those of us interested in the World Cup. Today's matchups are:

Egypt vs. Uruguay - No Mo Salah and a strong showing from Suarez could make this a tough day for Egypt.

Morocco vs. Iran - No politics and all... having said that, Go Morocco.

Spain vs. Portugal - This is the game of the day, clearly. Will Spain's tiki taka be able to create enough chances for them to score goals? They have arguably the best back 5 in the whole tournament including IMO the best keeper in the world in David De Gea. Of course Portugal have Ronaldo and some weird guys (I kid, I kid...but seriously).

Predictions?

For me:

Uruguay(w) 3-1

Morocco (w) 1 - 0

Spain/Portugal (d) 2 - 2

One of the best keepers in the world with a brutal mistake! This game has not disappointed for one moment. What an amazing first half of action.

The games have ben really good so far today. I can't imagine what will happen if Spain - after the controversy of firing their coach - if they lose this match to Portugal! I'd giggle.

Unrelated, I am LOVING the Adidas and Nike ads so far. Those must have been really fun to make.

I don't like Ronaldo; I prefer Messi, quite strongly.

But Ronaldo is terrific. Him against the world. Unquestionably a brilliant day, and that goal was fantastic.

Just an amazing game. Ronaldo with a GOAT type performance.

These teams are going to annihilate Iran and Morocco. Spain looked world class tonight, besides 2 set pieces and a huge goalkeeping mistake.

WOW

CR7

Stuff of legends.  That third goal -- perfection.  Never going to see a better fre kick.  Had de Gea fooled to think it was gonna miss, cuz it WAS gonna miss... then nope, it curles back in, waives "hi, beeyatch!" to de Gea while penning a note to Messi "Match this, dork!" and settled nicely into the upper corner for some sweet treats.  And I BE LIKE DANG.

There are rare occasions where I find this ok. For example, I use "draw" here because "tie" often means something else. There may be a word or two that is used so infrequently in America that the British pronunciation comes naturally.

But deliberate use of British pronunciation and agreements (using plural verbs for team names, for example) strikes me as artificial. People are self-consciously changing pronunciations or language to sound British in such cases. I basically agree with you here.

That was fantastic that Suarez missed that slam dunk, then had another shot saved. But man, Egypt had to go and give up that late free kick.

Portugal-Spain was a really good game, but Spain paid for giving up a late free kick, too. Props to Ronaldo - that was a great shot.

Wonderful day of games. Really looking forward to four tomorrow. My Wolves have got two players in the World Cup (Saiss for Morocco, N’Diaye for Senegal). One played well today in a loss.

Had a few surprising results so far. Happy with that, as when I looked at the setup, it seemed like it would be a pretty straightforward WC.
