Women Gym falls short of making to the finals
They worked hard and were close until the very end. They made us proud.
I gather there was some sort of controversy where they tied but didn’t advance or something. I didn’t see it, just seeing Twitter reactions.

We tied with LSU but lost on a tiebreaker.
Once again, fuck LSU!
Yeah, not sure what happened here but they tied with LSU for second but apparently LSU advances? I don't know the tiebreaker formula but if it's from the NCAA I'm sure it's the optimal amount of weirdness.
It’s called the “Livvy Dunne Rule.” In the event of a tie, the team with Livvy Dunne advances.
I absolutely wouldn't put it past the NCAA to weigh TikTok follower counts in tiebreakers.
I had to Google the name and was expecting to have to hunt around a bit to understand the comment.
Realization was immediate upon the search results populating.
Oh god--and it involves LSU. Lord help us...
You're correct that it involved "the optimal amount of weirdness". They didn't stand a chance when LSU brought in Brian Kelly for the dance-off tiebreaker.
"Heaven, I'm in heaven
And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak
And I seem to find the happiness I seek
When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek."
~ LSU coach Brian Kelly
I'm sure having Ed Orgeron as the dance judge probably didn't help.
On the UM website it says the tiebreaker is to take all 6 scores from the 4 events into account. Each school has 6 gymnasts compete, but the lowest score from the 6 is dropped to get the regular total and placement. But for the tiebreaker, the 6th score was important, and apparently our four 6th place scores were lower than LSU's four 6th place scores.
That actually makes a lot of sense.
What's a gym?
Oh... a gym!
Denver getting in after being able to host the regional despite being the lowest ranked team in the bracket is a bit annoying especially since there is some level of subjective grading in the sport, but still credit to them and LSU.
Feels like an end of an era a bit but I don't follow gymnastics nearly close enough to know if UM is going to replace stars like Brooks easily enough to keep competing at this level.
Barb Plocki and her team #47 doesn’t have to take a back seat to anyone. They’ve been elite for two decades. I’m proud of how they represent us.
[Edit]: As noted by the keen-eyed Charlotteblue below, it's Bev (or Beverly, I suppose) Plocki, not Barb.
She's built a powerhouse. They will be back.
Bev Plocki. Go Blue!
Thanks for the correction. I re-read my comment this morning and asked myself who the heck is Barb Plocki.
Go Blue!
They are a great team - and, unfortunately, came up a bit short in this regional.
Yeah this says nothing about the team. They won it all in '21, been elite for decades, lost this year on a tiebreaker.
I don't know much about gymnastics but I'm taking this as the equivalent of "ran into a one-man team in the Sweet Sixteen right as their superstar got hot and couldn't miss while triple-teamed from halfcourt" sort of day. As in, you can compete well enough to win and still get beat.
The seniors have their banner. For the underclassmen, go get 'em next year.
Watched last night with my wife. One of our gymnasts fell off the beam during her routine. Obviously that score was dropped in regular competition but when the tiebreaker became necessary, it came back to bite us. Total bummer and I know how awful she must feel. I’d never really watched gymnastics outside of the Olympics before and man oh man did it make me nervous. I can’t imagine the stress of doing those routines. Go Blue!!
Can't imagine a performing in a sport where every movement has to be flawless. I have a 6 year old that loves gymnastics and I'm already stressing about future competitions.
96 - if you have a chance, go to a Michigan gymnastics meet with your daughter. It's amazing what these athletes can do.
Go Blue!
Is a max number of characters can use in title of board post?
Congratulations on a strong season.
Go Blue!
At a glance I read the thread heading as Women Gym shorts fall....
As I was cycling through the various news sources I read daily, I caught this story on one of the major network's front page.
The headline was Dunne doing some dance on TikTok. The lead was that she created a video to celebrate LSU reaching the NCAAs.
The first quote in the story is apparently Dunne's reaction to a fan comment on her TikTok. I guess she couldn't be reached directly.
Later in the story it mentioned Denver won and LSU tied with Michigan for second. No mention of a tie-breaker.
Then there's a quote from the LSU coach, who could be reached directly, but didn't mention our heroine.
The intrepid reporter finally explains that Dunne herself did not compete in the tournament.
