W/L Predictions for our three rivals

Submitted by massblue on August 29th, 2022 at 11:52 AM

Really excited about this season.  What better way to kill another day at work than making some random predictions?  Here are my predictions for the upcoming season for UM, MSU, PSU and OSU.  In the west, I like Minn, but I don't think they can win again MSU and PSU on the road.

What, in the history of human beings, would ever make you think PJ Fleck would ever be a force to be dealt with in the B1G.  This is a guy who has custom inspirational shoes made on a weekly basis.  This is not a guy to be taken seriously.  He's an 8-5 B1G West coach, who'll float around that mean and have colorful antics, but never serious football.  Sure, he'll pop an 11-2 season for every 5-7 season.  But he's an 8-5 coach in the B1G division that is the equivalent of the 40-something uncle who lives in grandma's basement and has a pool table down there.  He's cool enough to associate with even into your teen years, but all the adults roll their eyes whenever his name comes up and you're finally starting to get why.

"... equivalent of the 40-something uncle who lives in grandma's basement and has a pool table down there ..."

Seems about right. I've seen him described (possibly by me) as a upper-middle-class Brady Hoke. He's done better than I expected but I cringed when people suggested him as a replacement for Harbaugh.

I'm sure I've said this here before, but, back when he was at my alma mater WMU, I was saying that he needed to wait out Dantonio.   The Sparties would LOVE his whole schtick.  I always thought it was cheesy as hell, and I'm glad he's not on a likely trajectory to coach at Michigan. But Sparta would eat that crap up.

OSU is definitely favored against us, but I think we have confidence from last year and smell blood in the water.  If we can find DEs that are half as good as Hutch and Ojabo, I think we beat them.

OSU 11-1.  (They could have a slip up game too, but I'm hoping they are undefeated when we beat them.)

MSU 10-2  Losses to OSU and Michigan.

PSU  8-4  Losses to Auburn, UofM, OSU and MSU.    If they beat MSU they lose to someone else.

I don't really understand the people thinking Auburn is going to beat Penn State.  I suppose the home field advantage will help Auburn and I heard Phil Steele on the radio saying he really likes Auburn's Oline and Dline.  But, they lost 19 players to the portal this year, and brought in 10 new players via transfer.  They are turning over a huge part of their roster, trying to get a lot of newbies up to speed.  The coach barely survived the off-season booster coup.  They lost their DC to a lateral position (OK St.)  They hired a new OC in December and he quit in January.  That can't be a stable program ready to roll in September.  Penn State beat them with a healthy Clifford last year and seems much more stable from a personnel standpoint.  And, they're a bit higher in preseason SP+ (13th vs. 21st)

i'm betting ohio loses to one of psu, ws or msu...... so they end the season with 2 losses, unless they fall to their big instate rival, toledo... then it'll be three losses, but I'm saying 2.

we cough up a game we shouldn't to iowa or lil bro..... cuz that seems to be what we do... finishing as a 1 loss Big Ten Champion....repeating and stuff.

I could see Penn State playing above their recent trajectory and taking one from us. I don't think we fall to Iowa or Sparty. OSU is scary, but even if we don't beat them, the rivalry does feel alive. What scares me (at the moment, didn't a few days ago) is a motivated and strong ND taking one from OSU and Freeman being for real. I dunno, he just has this double birdedness that might doubly F the OSU.

Agreed, and while everyone is curious to see what their defense will look like, I'm more interested to see what their run blocking looks like.  It's true they needed to clean house on defense, but their offensive line has underperformed for a few years IMO.  For all the #1 offense talk from last year, that was a team that averaged 2.1 per carry in the red zone and had a tough time getting 2-to-3 yards when they needed it.  If the bad guys improve in those two areas, it could be a long day in Columbus.

PSU 8-4: I think they lost too much from last year.

MSU: ?? They are definitely the team I’m most concerned about.  Tons of highly rated high school transfers, Tucker is a good coach.  If he can get them all to play together, this is a dangerous team.  9-3

OSU 12-0:  Both teams have great QBs, the difference is Meyer and now Day seems to maximize whomever is under center.  This was supposed to be JHs specialty but I think we lose this game because this hasn’t happened.  Unless it’s ugly and wet, then game on.

OSU (11-1): Defense is getting hyped to be a top 10 level but I think its going to just be mediocre year 1 under Knowles. They lose a stupid one. Hopefully to M

Sparty (8-4): I think they are a comparable strength team to last year sparty but the schedule is significantly harder resulting in a couple more losses. Also gotta think they arent as lucky in so many games

Notre Dame (9-3): Team is not good. Buchner cant throw, the Oline has a lot to improve from a down year last year and they have significant preseason injuries. But its basically a 4 game schedule between Ohio State, Clemson, BYU and USC. I think they only win 1 of those 4.

Minny: (8-4): I have no idea the big ten west is a shit show. Anyone could win at any time.

Penn State (9-3): Similar team as last year. Bit easier schedule and if they arent as unlucky they get to 9 games
