Wings One of Five Teams Battling for 2 Playoff Spots in the East

Submitted by smotheringD on April 5th, 2024 at 7:00 PM

For 5 teams in the Eastern Conference, the Wings, Flyers, Isles, Caps, and Pens, the playoffs essentially start tonight and tomorrow night.  With 6 or 7 games left in the regular season, the first four are essentially tied with winning percentages of 54.6% or 54.7%.  The Pens are a game back but have remaining games against the Wings and the Islanders.  On the last day of the season for these 5, the 16th, the Flyers play the Caps, the Pens play the Islanders, and the Wings play the Habs.

The Pens have the edge in the first tiebreaker with 30 regulation wins.  The Flyers and Caps are just behind with 28.  We will undoubtedly see some playoff atmosphere and intensity on the ice starting tonight.  As of this morning, this website gives the Wings a 45% chance to make the playoffs, over the Isles 36%, Caps 36% and Pens 20%:

This is the best time of the year for hockey fans with great games on tap almost every night for the next month.  Many like me hope to see McDavid's Oilers and MacKinnon's Avs get matched up out in the West (Go Oilers!).

Enjoy!

Not counting tonight's game, the Wings have 4 wins in 16 games since that stupid advertising patch went on. I'm not saying that's the reason, but I AM SAYING THAT'S THE REASON!

The Wings collapse over the last month has been breathtaking this season. Of course, this massive skid also aligns well with the fact they are playing nearly every game on the road.

Looks like the playoff cold streak is going to go on another year at this rate. Even though they are only a point or two out of a playoff seed, they are just so bad at this point.

The Holl, Petry, and Chiarot contracts have me wondering about the Yzerplan. He could have gotten similar d-men for less money and fewer years.

Would love to see the Wings get back in it. Despite this year, I think they’re moving in the right direction. Hockeytown bring us back

In real life: nothing

but

The Red Wings were first in the wild card. Once the patch was added, they started to suck.
Why add it mid season? Everyone knows players are superstitious. So when something changes it has to be weird. Right? I mean players don’t want others to touch their sticks or gloves. Players are notorious superstitious.

Again, it’s not the patches fault but what changed? The patch

It’s like when people on this blog keep saying that men’s basketball was sucking so football could thrive

If Michigan Hockey wins the national championship, I’ll take the Wings not making the playoffs…this year

Superstitious?

I played A LOT of hockey and I would say us hockey players are Ultra-Uber-Massive-Gigantic-stitious

I knew a guy who wore the same socks, tank-top, and underwear for 8 weeks straight because we went on a winning streak that included a 15 game winning streak in the league and we didn’t lose in 2 straight tournaments (6 wins to win a tourney)

21 straight games …. unwashed socks, unwashed tank-top, and unwashed underwear ….. for 8 weeks.

by week 3 we made him dress in the bathroom stall. He was effective on the forecheck because no one on the other team wanted to fight him in the corner for the puck. Smell still sticks with me

It’s really six teams, as Buffalo has an outside chance still (albeit it slim). Wings still have the best chance because even though they lost they simply lost the game in hand (and to the best team remaining on their schedule). That said, the four Metropolitan teams legitimately have the best chance, as those four are playing for two paths (division 3 seed or wild card), whereas the Wings have just one path (wild card).

Went to opening day at Comerica. Was cold but phenomenal.

The wings game was a brutal up and down watch.

we need help to get the last spot … or go 6-1 the last 7

I was including last nights game. That was a game I expected to be a loss in my 5-2 scenario. The other loss I'm expecting is Toronto on the road. The rest are winnable games and have to be or they're done. I don't think 4 more wins is enough.

If they are done I expect Lalonde won't be coaching in Detroit much longer.

Precisely, go 5-1 in the next 6 games and you're most likely in. They just can't drop any of those next 3 games. The Islanders and the Caps have pretty tough remaining schedules with 5 of the last 6 games being against teams either in the playoffs or in the hunt.

It's all up to the players.
