Wings One of Five Teams Battling for 2 Playoff Spots in the East
For 5 teams in the Eastern Conference, the Wings, Flyers, Isles, Caps, and Pens, the playoffs essentially start tonight and tomorrow night. With 6 or 7 games left in the regular season, the first four are essentially tied with winning percentages of 54.6% or 54.7%. The Pens are a game back but have remaining games against the Wings and the Islanders. On the last day of the season for these 5, the 16th, the Flyers play the Caps, the Pens play the Islanders, and the Wings play the Habs.
The Pens have the edge in the first tiebreaker with 30 regulation wins. The Flyers and Caps are just behind with 28. We will undoubtedly see some playoff atmosphere and intensity on the ice starting tonight. As of this morning, this website gives the Wings a 45% chance to make the playoffs, over the Isles 36%, Caps 36% and Pens 20%:

This is the best time of the year for hockey fans with great games on tap almost every night for the next month. Many like me hope to see McDavid's Oilers and MacKinnon's Avs get matched up out in the West (Go Oilers!).
Enjoy!
and the wings drop the buck v. the NY rangers right about....now.
LGRW!
Deer hunting is out of season!
And down 1 on a terrible turnover.
One of the worst I’ve ever seen, but then we got it right back.
Back to even!
Not counting tonight's game, the Wings have 4 wins in 16 games since that stupid advertising patch went on. I'm not saying that's the reason, but I AM SAYING THAT'S THE REASON!
We look way slow
Slowest team in the league
They have some of the worst mental mistakes in their own zone of any hockey team I’ve ever seen.
The Wings collapse over the last month has been breathtaking this season. Of course, this massive skid also aligns well with the fact they are playing nearly every game on the road.
Looks like the playoff cold streak is going to go on another year at this rate. Even though they are only a point or two out of a playoff seed, they are just so bad at this point.
These next three games are huge.
Rangers, Capitals, Buffalo are winnable home games. Anything can happen and usually does.
I wouldn't write them off so quickly.
Wings down 2-1 after one.
Caps up 2-0 after one.
Flyers losing 1-0 in the first.
The Holl, Petry, and Chiarot contracts have me wondering about the Yzerplan. He could have gotten similar d-men for less money and fewer years.
You forgot Copp as well. Even though he scored last night, he’s been terrible. Every team has bad contracts. The Wings only have one buyout available to them right now. They need to start clearing out some of these old players for the younger talent in their system.
J. T. Compher ties it up for Wings in 2nd, 2-2
3-3 now
LGRW🏒🏒🏒
MOAR goals!!!!!
Would love to see the Wings get back in it. Despite this year, I think they’re moving in the right direction. Hockeytown bring us back
BEAT NYR!
Down 4-3. NY with goal on the power play
Damnit need to tie this up!!
Flyers lose to Buffalo.
Capitals tied with 7 minutes to go.
Chairot had the puck on his stick and played grab-ass with it instead of clearing it. About 10 seconds later we got to fish it out of our own net.
Huge opportunity to move up in the standings as Flyers and Capitals both lose. Going to run out of games to win.
At least get a tie in regulation....
Sorry guys!
+1 [Informative].
New York Wolverines Unite!
Damn! Really needed to steal a point there. Thankfully the ‘canes got a late one to beat the caps in regulation.
4 wins in 17 games now! Karma and greed will bite you in the ass
Don’t all the teams have those advertising tramp stamps on their jerseys and helmets now?
Helmets: yes
Jerseys: No
What drives me crazy is that they added it mid season.
the patches ruin the second best uniform in the history of every sports team that ever sported … behind M home football.
1. M home football with maize pants unis
2. Red Wings (home or away) unis
3. Tigers home unis
And with the patch, what do the fans gain? Tickets, merchandise, food and parking never seem to stay the same or become cheaper.
If the Wings had the patch at the beginning of the season I roll my eyes and think that that’s how it is now, ads galore.
doc, you need to make room on your list for the detroit lions uni's, example here:
and the away uni's of that era here:
along with the canadians and black hawks for hockey
1. Michigan football.
1. Yankee pinstripes.
2. Every other uniform.
What karma and greed are you referring to?
In real life: nothing
but
The Red Wings were first in the wild card. Once the patch was added, they started to suck.
Why add it mid season? Everyone knows players are superstitious. So when something changes it has to be weird. Right? I mean players don’t want others to touch their sticks or gloves. Players are notorious superstitious.
Again, it’s not the patches fault but what changed? The patch
It’s like when people on this blog keep saying that men’s basketball was sucking so football could thrive
If Michigan Hockey wins the national championship, I’ll take the Wings not making the playoffs…this year
Superstitious?
I played A LOT of hockey and I would say us hockey players are Ultra-Uber-Massive-Gigantic-stitious
I knew a guy who wore the same socks, tank-top, and underwear for 8 weeks straight because we went on a winning streak that included a 15 game winning streak in the league and we didn’t lose in 2 straight tournaments (6 wins to win a tourney)
21 straight games …. unwashed socks, unwashed tank-top, and unwashed underwear ….. for 8 weeks.
by week 3 we made him dress in the bathroom stall. He was effective on the forecheck because no one on the other team wanted to fight him in the corner for the puck. Smell still sticks with me
Exactly!! Why ownership didn’t think and changed during the season is beyond me. They wanted money now
The way they’ve shat themselves the past two months, they should’ve been sponsored by Huggies.
...Depend.
What a collapse by the Wings. The east is gonna fuck around and let Pittsburgh back into the playoffs. Unbelievable
It’s really six teams, as Buffalo has an outside chance still (albeit it slim). Wings still have the best chance because even though they lost they simply lost the game in hand (and to the best team remaining on their schedule). That said, the four Metropolitan teams legitimately have the best chance, as those four are playing for two paths (division 3 seed or wild card), whereas the Wings have just one path (wild card).
Buffalo has been consistently beating playoff teams for the last couple of months. Once the pressure was off and they looked like they had no shot, they caught fire. Too bad it is likely too little, too late. Such is the nature of a young team.
Uh, don't look now, but here come the Sabres too. Big matinee game Sunday!
Went to opening day at Comerica. Was cold but phenomenal.
The wings game was a brutal up and down watch.
we need help to get the last spot … or go 6-1 the last 7
They need to go a minimum of 5-2 but I'd prefer 6-1.
Only six games left now. If they go 4-2 that only gets them to 90 points. That may not be enough. The tie breakers are not in the Wings favor.
I was including last nights game. That was a game I expected to be a loss in my 5-2 scenario. The other loss I'm expecting is Toronto on the road. The rest are winnable games and have to be or they're done. I don't think 4 more wins is enough.
If they are done I expect Lalonde won't be coaching in Detroit much longer.
More importantly there are three games with teams they are competing with for that last spot (Buffalo, Washington, and Pittsburgh). Those are absolute must win games because of the four point swing in each of those - and perhaps as importantly, really need to be regulation wins.
Precisely, go 5-1 in the next 6 games and you're most likely in. They just can't drop any of those next 3 games. The Islanders and the Caps have pretty tough remaining schedules with 5 of the last 6 games being against teams either in the playoffs or in the hunt.
It's all up to the players.
Sportsclubstats says if the Wings get to 90 points, they will actually have a 81-86% chance of getting in the playoffs. So 4-2 may not be a bad scenario since many of those wins would be against direct competitors.
