Will a player set another UM single season record?

A topic to prepare for the 2023 season.  Will a player set another UM single season record?

Last year we all saw our favorite kicker Jake Moody set a single season record for FGs made. The year before that Aidan set a UM single season record with 14 sacks.

This year we obviously return some phenomenal talent and have a relatively weak schedule allowing for some big numbers to be posted.  Listed below are some current single season records at UM:

Last year, JJ had 208 completions for 2719 yards and 22 TDs along with 306 yards rushing.  As Shea Patterson and Jake Rudock were both near the record, Harbaugh's offense shows that it can produce remarkable passing seasons.  JJ's 22 TDs were good enough for #6 while his yards were came in at #8, 10 yards behind 1986 Jim Harbaugh.

Blake netted 1463 yards with 18 TDs.  That was good enough for #7 in TDs and #8 in yards despite missing the last 3 games.

I don't think Blake sees nearly as many carries this year so I think this will limit his total yards particularly with a healthy Edwards and a bevy of other backs.  Nevertheless, I think he may be given lots of goal line opportunities. So, he could break the 26 rushing TDs.

If Blake and company run less, this should give JJ more opportunities in the passing game.  Completions, passing yards and passing TDs are all within reach with passing TDs the easiest record to break.  CJ Stroud had 41 last year.  Joe Burrow had 60 in his Heisman season.  Eclipsing 25 seems very achievable.

Question for the board is which record(s) do you think will fall in 2023?

These are some pretty lofty numbers for anyone on our team to break mainly because of the style we play and/or the backups we have that will most likely take away reps from our stars.  With the RB duo we have, JJ is not breaking any QB records (I would love to be wrong on this).  I really don't think we break any of the offense records.  Before I saw all the actual records, I did think maybe Johnson could give a go at breaking the interceptions record but 10 is A LOT! I don't see any individual records being broken, but there will most definitely be team records broken with this team this year.  Can't wait for the fun to begin!  Go Blue!!

I'll disagree on the passing TD record. JJ had 22 last year (23 if you count Wilson's overturned unfairly TD), just 4 (3) more would get 26 and that would be the record.

That is not a big leap - just one more TD every 3 games. IF he's made the strides he should have made as a player there will be more opportunities for passing (not a lot) - but a more efficient passing offense means more passing TD's.

I don’t see any individual season records being set for anyone on offense—they have too many weapons for one person to carry all the mail.

Not a record exactly but Corum and Edwards could become the first pair of backs since 1975 (Gordon Bell/Rob Lytle) to both reach 1000 yards. Would’ve gotten there last year if Edwards didn’t miss multiple games.

How about the Michigan kicking record for most extra points made in a season.  Or the kicking record for most kickoffs in a season.

If you achieve either of those, things are really going the right direction.

26 passing TD's seems the most reasonable to me. Just a few more than last year. Passing yards is unlikely as long as Harbaugh is here and with both Blake and Donovan in the backfield I can't see one of them getting that many yards (I see a much bigger role for Donovan this year, that's why).

Receiving records may never be broken unless there's a complete shift to an air raid offense.

Who is this Rudock character?  Don’t you mean Rudddddock?  And if we had Rudddddock for the whole season we’d be talking about his passing records.

What makes Biakabatuka's rushing record from 1995 all the more impressive was that he had all 1,800 of those rushing yards in just one game.

I seem to recall JJ having some ridiculous completion percentage through the first half or two-thirds of last season, like over 70% for a while and then hovering just under. Have to imagine he could threaten the single-season completion percentage record if he can sustain that the whole season or even just a bit longer than last year. Similarly, I think JJ had a pretty long streak of pass attempts without an INT going last season too. Not sure what either of those records are at M but naturally it would be fantastic to see JJ completing passes at a record-setting clip while not throwing interceptions.

For rushing, I have to imagine the combination of Corum and Edwards could threaten any number of tandem rushing records--like most number of games with multiple 100-yard rushers. Then again, the old Bo teams running the option and wishbone offenses spread carries and yards around to multiple backs pretty regularly too, so maybe those records are tougher to beat than I realize.

I think the passing TDs mark is the most likely to fall.  I don't expect we'll need JJ to throw in the second half of enough games for the completions or yards marks to be in jeopardy.  I think the goal for JJ is to improve his efficiency.  He isn't going to put up huge number, but I think he could plausibly threaten some of the numbers that Andrew Luck put up in Stanford's offense.  JJ averaged 8.4 ypa last year with a QB rating of 155; Andrew Luck put up 9 ypa with a QB rating of 170.  I'm more concerned with his efficiency than his raw numbers, given I don't expect him to be playing many 4th quarters this season.

JJ is breaking that Passing TD record.  He'll reach 30.

In my view, Passing Yards is the next likely record to go down.

The rushing records are safe for at least another year since the carries will be split by two great RBs.

Passing TDs seems like the most easily attainable given the way the game has changed and the the caliber of QB that JJ is and yet.....  Michigan's running game should allow them to just ground-and-pound the majority of the schedule into submission.

We don’t have the receivers to be a good passing offense. I guess I kinda don’t see the hype with the offense this year. the running game will be great but it’s not like we have some up and coming receiver that’s gonna give this offense a boost. Losing bell is huge. The lack of Clemons hype is disappointing to say the least. Really thought he would be what we hoped andrel was gonna be. Hopefully the Morris hype is at least real

The hype is that we have the best OL in the country, the best RB tandem in the country and a 2nd year starting QB who should take a step or two forward. Not to mention we won't have a disjointed play-calling scheme like last year. That alone should help the offense be better.

A team that can have a balanced offense and constantly keep the D on its toes is deadly. Doesn't need to be record breaking passing yards like an air raid to be great. An offense that is able to beat you on the ground AND in the air is deadly. You can't sit back and play to stop both.

I'd also argue that we have one of the best TE's in the country (that's a receiving threat) and a dynamic RB who could very well start at slot WR for many programs adds to the receiving corp. So no, we don't have elite WR's like an OSU but that doesn't mean this offense cannot be elite.

Do I think this offense will break a bunch of offensive records? No. Do I think it has a chance to be one of the best offenses in the country? Yes.

I find it interesting that some guy name Albert Hernstein set the record for rushing TD in 1902! With all the great backs we have had over the years I cannot believe that record still stands. Someone above said 26 would have rated first last year. Looking over most rushing TD in a season on https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/leaders/rush-td-player-season.html plenty of backs at other schools have obliterated that number. It also shows what a beast Barry Sanders was!
