Why do so many Alabama Crimson Tide football players drive nice cars?

Jarren Reed:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Police say Alabama defensive lineman Jarran Reed was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Tuscaloosa police say Reed was stopped early Sunday after hitting another car while both backed out of parking spots. Police say Reed drove a 2011 Dodge Charger toward the parking lot's exit before he was pulled over.

Ha Ha Clinton Dix:

The night before Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was set to leave Alabama headed to Florida to visit his family, he loaded his car with all his essentials: clothes, shoes, an iPad ... and money.

Overnight, his 2012 Dodge Charger was broken into. The Alabama standout safety was easy prey for robbers, with his doors left unlocked and his vehicle loaded with valuables, including about $200 in cash, a source close to the situation told Sporting News.

Altee Tenpenny:

GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) — A 20-year-old college football player was killed in a one-car crash in Mississippi, a local coroner said Wednesday. Altee Tenpenny was pronounced dead at 6:57 p.m. Tuesday at Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville, Washington County Coroner Methel Johnson told The Associated Press. Tenpenny, who played at Alabama in 2013 and 2014, was taken to the hospital after he wrecked a 2008 Dodge Charger near the community of Glen Allan, Johnson said.

Trent Richardson (not a Charger but...)

On August 28th, 2011 Alabama running back Trent Richardson was pulled over for speeding in Chilton County, Alabama. The Crimson Tide star was going 85 in a 70 and the officer noted that he blamed the "large rims" on his vehicle for the speeding violation. What was the vehicle? A 2011 GMC Yukon which retails for in the neighborhood of $40,000 even without the added expense of new rims. Raise your hand if it makes sense that an "unemployed" athlete at Alabama with two children, no job, and a non-wealthy family could afford a brand new SUV. Put your hands down Alabama fans. Trent Richardson could be flying in his own private jet and you'd talk about how it's perfectly reasonable for him to avoid traffic this way.

Because Saban is a hypocrite that only voices up when it benefits his program.

If satellite camps didn't dictate Alabama's recruiting success you wouldn't hear a peep out of Saban.

The man is one of the best coaches of all time, but he's a damn hypocrite.

No offense, but when is a charger a nice car? I know a used ones are pretty cheap unless you have an srt8 or a hellcat. If you would have been around Michigan around the late 90's, you would have seen this and more. It is possible that their parents did buy their vehicles. I know when I got scholarships to cover part of my tuition, my parents bought me a new suv with the money they saved. So it is possible.

I know the DePriest family personally. It is not outside of the realm of possibility that they could have afforded that car for him.

I knew several middle class families who had kids that got sports scholarships for college. The parents then spent the college account on a new car for the kids.

Why do you guys care? The kids deserve nice cars. More so than most of you. If I wrote the rules, your M football scholarship would come with the lease of your choice for $500/month. Why not? The institutions need to consider complying with reality. How many of you (from out of state) would have attended M if the athletics were sub par? Not me. Not most of you either. Ten of our individual, annual tuition payments could have covered purple M3's and jet ski's for the entire team. But would you all feel inferior or that the free tuition "should" be enough? Go should on someone else. Or get reborn so talented and hard working that I want to pay to watch you perform.

WTF? Free college and get to
Play football? Like. Yeah. Extra work. By a ton. But cmon man. You wouldn't trade your college and library / partying for
Being on the damn football team and putting in work? The entitlement is unreal.

Sounds like the Alabama athletic department has an open account at the local Tuscaloosa Dodge dealer.

That said (stones and glass houses) I distinctly remember Juwan Howard tooling around Ann Arbor in a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee back in the early 90's.

So there is absolutley NO WAY that any of them or thier parents could afford a descent car.  For all anyone knows their parent(s) could have been saving money for them to go to college.  When they got the scholarship they could have used the money to reward thier child.  I could buy any of those cars with the money saved from college tuition for just one on my kids.  We are just a typical middle class family.  I see no reason why any of them couldn't afford those cars on their own, I got a car loan at 18 with a co-signer that would have easily covered the cost of al the cars pictured.  Now if I had no bills for 4-5 years on top of that it really wouldn;t have been an issue.  I really hope that this thread is not some stereo typical attempt at saying "Look at the young black kid with the nice car, wonder how he afforded that, wink wink..."

Perhaps some kids parents help them get nice cars in a pretty reasonable price range because they don't have to pay for college? I mean, those are like 20k cars

A lot of them got chargers following the 2011 National Championship (over ND)... So 2011/2012 models... I dated a girl who worked for the athletic department and she even admitted that the players got them very randomly.

At first glance this appears shady, but there are some excellent explanations (above) about how players budget cars into their monthly bills. I guess the debate about players getting paid has confused many of us (including myself) into thinking that players could never afford anything because they aren't paid. In actuality, they have stipends and other compensation (food/books) that make the housing stipend easier to stretch into a car/house and the players seem to be capable of making this stretch themselves. Also makes me wonder how necessary is it to pay players as employees rather than just increase their stipend a bit.

Nothing to see here. These are not luxury cars. Even if you cross reference dates they attended college with the year and model of the cars they were driving at that time, nothing here looks like cheating

Unless it's a Viper I wouldn't say there's a Dodge made that would be considered abnormally nice for a college kid. Also, if my kid was going to be making millions in a couple years I don't think I'd worry about buying them a nicer car to drive around until they got drafted.

College athletes having nice card never surprises me beyond Pryor having a new car with dealer plates while still being investigated for taking payments. So basically, if you aren't an idiot I don't care. And while these aren't "nice cars" compared to some, the fact there are so many chargers points to a dealer giving them deals, which is eyebrow raising if only because you should diversify your stock.
