Who would you target for our remaining football staff?

With Clink now gone, and I don't begrudge him, our defensive staff cupboard is pretty bare.

If you were Sherrone Moore, who would you be targeting? College guys, NFL guys, former UM staffers/players?

My knowledge of random position coaches outside of Michigan is limited to say the least, so I've got no specific names I'd want. However, I think at a bare minimum I'd want guys who have coached in college (now or previously) and shown themselves to be at least plus recruiters.

Bitch, I don't know!  I'm not a football coach. I don't have connections in the industry.  I'm just a fan, and in this case my opinions mean didly shit.

But on the other hand, I can be pissy that Warde didn't want to cough up the money to retain our staff.  I mean, the money will be there if you lean on the right boosters enough.

I’m not sure where things started that the problem is Warde is not allowing us to spend money for our coaching staff.

I have plenty of issues with Warde Manuel, but mostly they have to do with him mishandling the Harbaugh relationship, not doing a good job of getting the people we were hiring, a terrible job of handling the hockey situation, and other things I’m probably forgetting.  I guess I never have thought the problem was that he’s too cheap.

You should also take a look at the revenue numbers for the Chargers versus the Michigan Athletic Department.  It’s more than twice what we have (and if you look at profit the disparity is even larger).  We aren’t actually capable of winning a bidding war with the Chargers even if we wanted to.

Michigan has lost 5 of the 10 coaches that have left college for the pros this off season. Currently 50% have come from 1 out of the 130 plus schools.

Yeah sure it checks out. Why not. Those numbers tell me Warde did all he could. Nothing to see here folks.

Brought to you by the enablers who thought our baseball program wasnt worth $700k a year because "sunshine".

The only reason Michigan is losing a higher number of coaches is because they’re following Harbaugh… Elston, Clink, JayBaugh and Herbert wouldn’t even be in the conversation for NFL jobs if it weren’t for the fact that the head coach they already work for is bringing them along to his new job…

It will be fascinating to see how the staff fills out and then how spring practice and fall camp play out.

This season could go any number of ways, but if they settle on a QB early, I'm pretty optimistic about hosting a playoff game. That's a pretty good year zero anyway you slice it.

There's still a lot of talent coming back. 2025 will be pretty rough though, especially if Wink goes back to the NFL without any clear successor.

I've seen this comment before and I just don't get it. Who is this top-end talent that is going to bail? IMO, the people on defense that we absolutely cannot lose are:

  • Will Johnson
  • Kenneth Grant
  • Mason Graham
  • Rod Moore
  • Derrick Moore
  • Josaiah Stewart
  • Makari Paige
  • Rayshaun Benny (maybe)

Why would any of these guys leave? They basically have one year left and will be headed for the draft. Are they going to take a chance on a new team just for more money than they're getting at Michigan? I just don't see it.

Thankfully, we have the portal and talented depth. Plus, the DC position will be much coveted.

Michigan is behind the eight ball now because of Harbaugh leaving so late. Next year that won’t be a problem. Sherrone will have all of December to fill roster holes. I suspect that Wink’s replacement will be on staff. Osborne seems like a guy who could be a candidate. Has DC experience now plus familiarity with scheme.

Idk, I think the correct answer is probably someone who is actually a coach and has shown to be a plus recruiter.

“hire random TV analyst that played football a while ago” would be a universally terrible idea if it wasn’t a Michigan legend. That’s the only reason his name is brought up and it’s kinda lazy.

Well Woodson was one of the best to ever do it, he is not just a random TV analyst. Look at the success coach prime has had recruiting (I'm including transfers with recruiting, this class is very small but he gets one 5* per year).

Big personality with championship and Superbowl rings. You could do worse in the recruiting trail! But of course, he wouldn't be interested and it's just a joke.

If Michigan wanted to go this route they could offer Deon to coach the secondary. He has loads of connections from Sound Mind. Not saying it’s a great idea, but he’s well respected and could recruit. He also would keep the secondary together, as all the current guys really like and respect him.

Moore had two options, making Elston and Clink co-DC or bring in a new DC at the high risk of losing the entire staff on the defensive side. He chose the 2nd option.

If Wink is going to be the next DC (I am still waiting for the official announcement), he will need someone more familiar with college football and its recruiting landscape on his staff,

First year head coach with a staff made up of only first year coordinators and coaches seems high risk as well.  It sucks that we lost both of those guys and I have no idea if this was plan A, B or C, but Wink has the advantage that he has a bunch of connections and has been coaching for many many years. I am hopeful that he will be able to find good coaches / recruiters, he just needs time to assemble his staff.

I mean, can you blame him? First time HC, with a first time OC (Yes, I know Campbell was the OC at ODU, but is that really the same thing?) AND a first time CO-DC's in Elston and Clink?! I mean, MAYBE, if it was Minter as HC and Moore stayed OC. Then I could see the CO-DC thing working. But, if I was Moore, I'd want a guy that knew the system and was a proven play caller running the defense .

All I know is if they do not get NIL under control, college players are going to have to coach themselves in the next few years as all the coaches either quit or go to the NFL.
