Who stays and who returns for 2022?
We could probably have a better idea of this in 6 weeks, but this is just for speculation on who may be coming back next season.
Michigan currently has a whopping 80 players who have eligibility remaining and could return if both sides agreed to it. Add in a class of 22-23 players and it’s obvious there will be a lot of players moving on after this season. So let’s take a look:
Grad Students:
Steuber, Jeter, Upshaw, Filiaga, Bowman, Ross, Hongiford.
Steuber has already accepted a senior bowl invite. I think Upshaw will be back for sure as he is only sophomore eligiblity despite being a senior/GS. Could be a starter next season. Bowman I’m sure will not return. Ross could technically return for a 6th due to a medical RS but I doubt he will be back. Of this group I would say probably only Upshaw.
Seniors: Bell, Welschoff, Schoonmaker, Baldwin, Hayes, Barrett, Moody, Gray, Gemon and German.
This is a good group and I could see everyone being offered a 5th year with the exception of maybe German Green, Baldwin as they may have been passed by younger players.
Early Entry:
Haskins, Hill, Ojabo, Smith, Hinton.
I think it’s fair to assume the first 3 will go, hoping the DTs stay another year.
Playing time transfers:
I won’t speculate on any players transferring but I think it’s safe to assume we will see 6-10 guys moving on via the portal that have not been seeing the field and have been here 2 or 3 years. Especially on the defensive side as the roster is a bit Defense heavy in terms of numbers.

Can't we just enjoy the past 2 wins without worrying about next year?
December 6th, 2021 at 10:41 AM ^
I think it's fine to speculate now on next years roster. Michigan already won the big ten and now they are idling for the next 4 weeks.
December 6th, 2021 at 10:41 AM ^
por que no los dos?
December 6th, 2021 at 11:21 AM ^
Is this really “worrying”. Unless there is a shocking level of attrition (which would certainly count as worrying), we have a very sold nucleus coming back. Very conservatively:
Running back - Corum/Edwards
QB - McNamara or JJ as starter
WR - long list even if you lose someone because of playing time concern.
OL - Zinter, Hayes, Keegan, Barnhart etc.
TE. - Schoomaker, hopefully All
plus lots of youngsters who haven’t seen the field
Defense may lose a bit more, but still, plenty of promising players, both experienced and on the roster.
With early signing day next week and the transfer portal full of big names, there is going to be plenty of addition in the coming week or so and speculating about how many spots we have and where the biggest holes and who may fill them is part of the fun of being a fan.
Personally I am excited that we are not talking about next year in terms of can we finally be good enough, but how can we be at least as good. We are now in a re-loading, situation next year, not a re-building. As Harbaugh has noted, it feels like this could be both something great this year and the beginning of more sustained success moving forward.
December 6th, 2021 at 11:47 AM ^
I think it’s possible to enjoy our last 2 wins and also have a discussion about next years team. This is a message board after all and the two are not mutually exclusive.
December 6th, 2021 at 12:22 PM ^
Can't we just not respond to posts that don't interest us that pertain to the football team on the Michigan sports blog?
December 6th, 2021 at 12:48 PM ^
Go ahead and enjoy. But we have three weeks to go until the next game, interest in the football team is extremely high, and at some point next year is going to be a question (for positive reasons!).
To be honest, for much of this year I was hoping to see "growth" with an eye for what could be next year, my default pessimism fighting off much in the way of high expectations for this year. And the signs for next year on offense are particularly good. Haskins probably goes pro... leaving us with Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards. We'll lose some guys off the line, but I have confidence that our OL pipeline will produce a workable offensive line next season in a way I did not have confidence in, say, 2017. We have every receiver coming back, including Ronnie Bell, and the guys all show terrific promise.
And throwing to them will be either Better Cade Mcnamara or Better JJ McCarthy.
The offense should be elite next year, assuming we have a good coaching arrangement there (Gattis could leave after this season, which isn't the end of the world but would need the staff will need to reorganize). The question then becomes, what will the defense look like? And.. we're not sure yet.
But it's not unreasonable to ask. It would be great if Michigan could continue this run of excellence by being elite again next year, which would help fortify a better recruiting approach and set us up for years of legit national contention. It's possible that this is just a "peak" year in a cycle where we still frequently have to look up at OSU, but leveraging this success into sustained dominance and parity with OSU is also possible.
And if people are worried about "looking ahead," well: I guarantee you the coaching staff is thinking about this.

Methinks Ross will stay on another year....
December 6th, 2021 at 10:56 AM ^
Honestly, I kinda think both NHG and Colson might be better than Ross by the start of next season.
December 6th, 2021 at 11:02 AM ^
It's certainly possible, but I think he has alluded to coming back. Nice to have such solid options.
December 6th, 2021 at 12:01 PM ^
Honestly , Im certain you are seeing things clearly.
December 6th, 2021 at 12:50 PM ^
I'm curious as to why some of you have been so down on Josh Ross? Hell, the kid as only led the team in tackles the entire season and there isn't even a close second. WTF more does this kid have to do? IMO Josh has balled out, has been a great leader has been very solid on defense and without him there all year long, I don't think Colson, Barrett, or the other guy gets it done and we arent champions. Gees-o-Pees.
"ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!!!!!"?????
December 6th, 2021 at 1:33 PM ^
Ross has had a good year. Very good vs run. Has trouble in coverage. #41 @ #25 are both talented in the run and the pass.
December 6th, 2021 at 11:21 AM ^
Those who stay will be Champions... again.
December 6th, 2021 at 12:00 PM ^
In my opinion, Ross has "coach" written all over him. I could see him breaking in as a GA in the next couple years and climbing the ranks.
December 6th, 2021 at 10:42 AM ^
Normally, we'd be deep diving this for a week or so now but things have changed and we'll have plenty of time to think about it but first, we have the most important football coming up that this program has played, perhaps ever!
December 6th, 2021 at 10:50 AM ^
Why is Upshaw (an '18) grouped with a bunch of '17s? Decisions of this type tend to revolve around eligibility more often than academic progress.
Also, are the DTs showing up in mock drafts?
December 6th, 2021 at 10:57 AM ^
I’m just going off how they are listed on the roster. Upshaw is listed as a Grad student and I noted he has sophomore eligibility which makes him quite likely to return.
December 6th, 2021 at 11:03 AM ^
If Upshaw has more penalties like yesterday's...yeesh.
December 6th, 2021 at 10:59 AM ^
I hope Smith and Hinton both come back. They both had way better years than most probably projected, d-line would be really good with them back next year.
December 6th, 2021 at 11:19 AM ^
They certainly have stepped up this year at a positions of need, but another year could see an even bigger jump that puts them higher on NFL draft-boards. I don't think either has reached their fullest potential yet, and both could earn some more money with a strong campaign in '22. Fingers crossed.
December 6th, 2021 at 12:02 PM ^
Agreed. If they both come back it would probably help McGregor and the other edge players in a big way along with the linebackers. They could really be a major force in the middle of our defense next year
December 6th, 2021 at 11:00 AM ^
I wonder if NIL money will influence 'fringe' players to stay as long as they can. They could be in a position to go to a G5 and be a starter, or stay here, be a rotation guy, and get more NIL money.
December 6th, 2021 at 11:24 AM ^
That's an interesting point and one that I hadn't considered before. I wonder if NIL money is greater for a G5 starter or a premier Power 5 rotation player?
December 6th, 2021 at 11:31 AM ^
Also would be interesting to see how 'premier P5' breaks down in terms of NIL. The mythical Michigan money cannon hasn't necessarily come to fruition yet, compared to at least the very public headlines of Miami, MSU, etc. (just in terms of the whole-team deals, ignoring the individual player ones).
Seems as you'd expect we've been more on the cautionary side of this one. You'd imagine eventually recruiting includes pointing to a piece of paper that says the avg Miami player makes xyz... but it may be too early. I still think today real playing time at a G5 > bench at a P5 for most.
December 6th, 2021 at 11:26 AM ^
And, stay to earn a degree at Michigan
December 6th, 2021 at 11:01 AM ^
You didn't mention Hutchinson, but maybe at this point, it is pointless to discuss whether he is returning or not.
December 6th, 2021 at 11:03 AM ^
He gone, perhaps straight to #1 overall!
December 6th, 2021 at 11:04 AM ^
Wait for the "I hope he values his degree and comes back" crowd to chime in.
December 6th, 2021 at 11:09 AM ^
Most likely will have his degree at the end of this academic year
December 6th, 2021 at 11:12 AM ^
Pointless might be an understatement. We were lucky to have him back this year, and thank goodness we did.
December 6th, 2021 at 11:32 AM ^
He'll make a boatload more money in the NFL because he stayed. Great decision to stay - everybody wins.
December 6th, 2021 at 12:06 PM ^
I don't think the money is the main reason Hutchinson is glad he came back. Dude is a Michigan legend now up there near Desmond and Woodson.
December 6th, 2021 at 12:07 PM ^
Hopefully some of his teammates realize this as well…Specifically Hinton, Smith & Hill…Dax may be a long shot to come back, but I think he could have a Hutchinson-like jump if he did
December 6th, 2021 at 11:33 AM ^
I thought of it, but did not because, yes it is pointless.
December 6th, 2021 at 12:05 PM ^
Technically he's eligible to return, but if he did it would indicate that he's less motivated by money than any Michigan grad since the Unabomber.
December 6th, 2021 at 12:10 PM ^
Didn't mention Dax either. I'm not so sure he's as slam dunk out the door as Hutch and Ojabo. I think, last I saw Dax was projecting in the 3rd round. It doesnt seem impossible to me that he sticks around for another year, takes over some of that leadership role on the Defensive side of the ball and tries to show out for a better draft spot next year. He's grown a lot this year and I think another year could really do him some good.
Maybe I'm being too optimistic though.
December 6th, 2021 at 12:28 PM ^
My steaming hot take is that it is in Hutchinson's best interest to return for another year - by playing another year at Michigan, he EXTENDS his pro career by another few years because he doesn't get drafted by the Lions this year and contemplates retiring early like Barry and Megatron did.
December 6th, 2021 at 11:01 AM ^
While the team will certainly lose a collection of incredible players, in recent weeks I've been especially attentive to how many younger players are contributing a great deal.
Defense: Colson, Hill-Green, Harrell, Moten, Moore, Jenkins
Offense: Zinter, McCarthy, Corum, Edwards, Anthony, Henning, Wilson
All 13 of those guys had fairly significant roles by the end of the year and are all either freshmen or sophomores. I didn't list any juniors or above. That's a great sign for the next few years.
We know the incoming class is strongest in the secondary. My biggest questions for next year's roster at this point will be OL and Edge.
December 6th, 2021 at 11:04 AM ^
Don't forget Mike Morris! Very bright future for that guy
December 6th, 2021 at 11:18 AM ^
And Ronnie Bell!
December 6th, 2021 at 11:25 AM ^
YES! Excited to see Ronnie Bell play next year.
December 6th, 2021 at 12:30 PM ^
I see a lot of Desmond Howard in Ronnie Bell. He will be a star next season.
December 6th, 2021 at 11:17 AM ^
I’m really interested to see the snap count chart. Harrell and Jenkins played a lot. I think the defensive coaches like what Harrell brings in stopping the run even more than Ojabo
December 6th, 2021 at 12:04 PM ^
Harrell is a baller. Very underrated.
December 6th, 2021 at 12:44 PM ^
Harrell is going to be a break-out STAR next year!
December 6th, 2021 at 11:31 AM ^
I was thinking about that, too. The team has gotten a lot better throughout the season and a lot of that is attributable to the development of our young players.
I can't remember a season that has had this many freshmen play pivotal roles. Colson, Hill-Green (RS Fr.), Moten, and Moore are all freshmen starterish players.
McCarthy, Edwards, and Anthony are all true freshmen.
December 6th, 2021 at 12:59 PM ^
OL should have a strong nucleus with Zinter, Keegan and Barnhart - all have played a lot snaps even though Barnhart’s tailed off the last month. Anderson and Atteberry are apparently showing high potential at C. Tackle is the real challenge - but Barnhart has the ability to slide out there and then the staff needs 1+ from Jones, Persi and Bounds. My bet is Jones for next year.
DT was the great concern entering this year. If Smith and Hinton return, then it could be a strength for 2022. Speight, Welschof and Whittley could head out, so need some young guys to step up. Jenkins is playing a lot and Berry looked the part when he had a tackle at the end of the B1G game. Is there any scuttlebutt about other DTs ascending for 2022?
December 6th, 2021 at 11:02 AM ^
related question: i know that ohio claims to have had a 'young' team that lost to an older, experienced michigan team, but is that true? i think i heard that 13 freshman played against ohio, and while certainly only a few were starters or saw a lot of time, what did we have in terms of seniors to balance that? 8 or 10? seems like a normal distribution. we'll miss hutch and his scottish-nigerian twin brother ojabo tremendously. a few O-line guys. dax will go to the draft. who else?
December 6th, 2021 at 11:03 AM ^
Some of the guys forwarding that meme about Old Michigan seem to think Dax Hill is a seventh-year player, so it's safe to say they don't know what they're talking about
