Which recruits are visiting for the OSU game?

Submitted by Magnus on November 25th, 2019 at 2:45 PM

This weekend is turning out to be a HUGE recruiting weekend for Michigan, as you might expect. The 2020 visitors list isn't that spectacular, but that's somewhat expected since a lot of players have already committed and are signing on the dotted line in a few weeks. The bigger news is the guys in the 2021 class and beyond, where there are some heavy hitters included. This will be Michigan's biggest chance to impress those 2021 recruits for a game weekend, because keep in mind that OSU, MSU, and Notre Dame are all away games in 2020.

The big immediate impact guy is Darion Green-Warren, who could potentially come in and start at cornerback next year. He's a 4-star and a Top 247 guy.

What happened to the VA DE 2020 recruit that was interested in visiting Michigan awhile ago but had to reschedule?

Harrell I think was his last name?

Edit: On 247 it says that Jaylen Harrell is indeed visiting this weekend as well

What are the benefits/impact of recruits visiting for what clearly is the biggest game of the year against your biggest rival and the energy that the game itself brings versus the bad weather for out of region prospects?

Eventually if they commit they would experience the weather, however, I wonder if the only upside is if it's a great game. If the outcome is poor and it's bad weather also, wouldn't the more positive impact be during a week with better weather and an opponent that affords you more attention to dedicate towards each recruit?

Risk vs. reward?

No real downside for committed targets, but for uncommitted targets, it seems a bit risky.

thanks for the post mags.  general question:  of course if we pull out a victory there will be joyous celebration in AA, but what do you think about inviting guys that might be on the fence to a game where there is a substantial chance that we might get beaten?  seems like a turn-off for a recruit.

never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never-in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy

I think it's just important to get them to visit no matter what. Some guys you may never have another chance to get them on campus. And the campus does sell itself besides the football program. If we get beat, we get beat. The recruits are going to know if we got beat whether or not they visit. You take a visit from a recruit any way you can get it, and sell the loss as others have said above. Let's hope for a victory though. Go Blue!!!

They get to see a real big game atmosphere and be part of the biggest crowd in the nation.

Who is Michigan recruiting against for them? If it's OSU, then it sucks. not great if it's PSU. If it's Miami and FSU or playoff teams, I don't think the result matters much. Same if it's ND or Stanford. Obviously it's better to win, worse to get blown out. I think most recruits at this stage are looking for fit more than final scores.

The bigger problem I see is that the coaches and players are especially busy before and during the game. Will be more down than usual after a loss. And there will be a lot of visitors. It's not a good time for a recruit to get a lot of attention.

I think the overall experience is what really matters. We've had players go on college visits to games where the home school lost, and the players come back saying, "They lost, but [insert excuse here]." It's because of injuries, turnovers, bad officiating, etc. When they come back, they're mostly talking about the facilities, the coaches' personalities, etc.

So I don't think it matters as much to them as it does to a lot of fans.

Question:  Do recruits actually prefer to visit on a big game weekend like this?

If I were a recruit, I think I'd prefer to visit during a game against a bodybag so I get (maybe?) a bit more attention from the coaching staff.

Unless the opponent is irrelevant to the recruiting visit schedule?

I can't speak for the recruits or individual tastes, obviously - but the point of the game experience part of the visit is to see the fans going nuts, to feel the Big House and come out of that tunnel hearing 110+ thousand people cheering, and feeling the electricity of that environment.  Giving the kid the ability to sense what it's like to be there, and get a sense for how much palpable energy there is on that field.

Yes, yes I assume they do like to visit for big games.

I doubt they get much attention from the coaches during the game at all, aside from a few, "hey, enjoying yourself?" maybe.  Coach time is for before/after the game, and on into Sunday.

our visit during season included all the coaches for a few minutes right when the meeting/visit started, each introduced and the head coach making a nice speech.  then they all left and we were given a tour of the campus (not U of M), a meal, and tickets to the game.  we were on the field for some of it and i took some of the younger brothers.  fun day.

Magnus,

you might be new here so I’ll cut you a little slack, but you are doing this wrong. While your title is correct, the rest of the post is supposed to simply say, “does anyone have any updates?” Then posters are supposed to add witticisms like, “lmgtfy” or, “pay for a subscription to...” or from the trolls “who cares, we’re just going to get our butts kicked anyway.” Finally someone who’s a little bit more helpful will say, “touch the banner has good updates for that stuff.” They’ll provide a link, some guy named Thunder will have an update on that blog, and the thread will have run its natural course.

Maybe next time.
