Wheatley Jr. to Stony Brook

Submitted by cbs650 on

Wheatley Jr. has transferred to Stony Brook University. Will be eligible to play this season as he dropping to FCS level. Big get for my alma mater.

Stony Brook?! Dang, I hope he is good with the books, because clearly the football career is not a happenin' thing.

Who is a bigger bust: Derrick Green or TJ Wheatly?

Why do I so often see comments on here that a player would physically hurt someone because they were rude to them. Yeah Wheatley is stronger than 95% of the people on this blog.....I would hope that doesn’t make him feel like he can hurt anyone. And for someone to suggest it makes me look down on you.

I'd say 99.9% rather than 95%. People with any fame whatsoever (and being a notable recruit for an elite college football team certainly qualifies) take so much crap on a daily basis that a short fuse would lead to a shorter career. Plus, his dad probably thoroughly prepared him for it. It's not easy when anonymous keyboard warriors kick you when you're at your lowest point (which so many people out there seem to enjoy), but it's something that's so prevalent that every athlete is familiar with it and most have long since learned to ignore it. I'm sorry Wheatley didn't thrive here - that would have been a great story since his dad was one of the best to wear the uniform - but I wish him success and wouldn't completely count out a comeback some day.

He was indeed 4th if not 5th on the depth chart. He was not even in the top 110 for fall camp due to injury and would not have been able to practice until school started. He is only going to play one more year even though he has 2 years of eligibilty left. He may try the NFL route after 1 year at Stony Brook.

I wish him well. I don't know him but i believe everyone who says he's a great kid. His dad was certainly one of our all-time best. But his shortcomings on the field were not solely a product of injury. Even when healthy, his presence as a blocking TE was overstated. His contribution as a receiving TE was nearly non-existent. That's not dumping on him. That's simply a fair assessment of his on-field performance at UM.

Not totally crazy. He avoids having to sit out 2018 by transferring to FCS. Better to be in FCS than JuCo or redshirting in FBS, and Stony Brook is a decent school. And if he graduates in Spring/Summer 2019, he could grad transfer back to FBS and be able to play in 2019.

Tyrone Wheatley, Jr.’s stay at Michigan seems to have been cursed by high expectations due to his family pedigree, injuries and uncertainty about the position that best suited his talents.

He’s going to a good FCS program.  Stony Brook was 10-3 and ranked 11th in the final FCS coaches poll last season.  He still has the opportunity to get back on track towards success.

Interesting that the Stony Brook football roster lists Tyrone Wheatley, Jr. as being 6-6 and 265. I'm guessing that umbig11 might be able to provide information that contradicts those measurements.

Unfortunately, this story reminds me that for every Peyton Manning, Steph Curry and Ken Griffey, Jr., there’s at least one like Jarrett Payton, Jordan Dumars and Pete Rose, Jr. who never achieves as much success in athletics that his father achieved.

Think of how Seth Curry and Mychel Thompson must feel about being compared not only to their respective fathers, but also to their respective brothers, Steph and Klay.
