What to look for schematically when OSU has the rock

Submitted by steve sharik on

How Urban Meyer has always run his offense is to get to the line quickly, scan the defense, and then either stay with the play or audible. Therefore, as the Bucks come to the line today, two general things to watch:

  1. Pre-snap, count the box and also the number of defenders over receivers. If the number of Michigan defenders is equal to the number or receivers, expect "run throws." If the number of Michigan defenders is one more than the number of receivers, expect inside run. This is not 100% accurate, but it can help you see the game plans.
  2. After the snap, look for the unblocked defensive lineman, and watch his technique. If he chases the RB, look for QB run. If not, it will be RB run. If all defensive linemen are being run-blocked, Ohio is likely reading the backside ILB, with the same, give/pull read.

Backward pass or toss to Smith and he passes off from it.  I'm also anxious to see what type of trickery JH has been saving for this game.

For the first time we probably have a coaching advantage.  It seems like their offensive staff just can't create the juggernaut that Hermann did with the same talent.  I'm excited to finally see our staff pull out all the stops. This will be fun.

so I'll post here. We really need to start attacking directly up the field. We have to trust that the edge can contain Elliot as the defense is currently completely unsure of who to follow. It's looking a bit like the early days of the read option with all of the mass confusion. You can't play man and allow them to run like they have. If Barrett is going to be a factor on those stretch zone reads you have to hit him every play. To do that you attack up field when they stretch. It's that or let them score.
