What (if anything) has Harbaugh done wrong in Year 1?

Submitted by FormAFarkingWall on

So many good things have happened in 1 Anno Harbaugh, the Year of Our Harbaugh, that the list of positives would fill up a series of diaries, and even then would still be incomplete.

We've discussed, and celebrated, the many good things and will continue to do more of that I'm sure.  This morning, to change it up, I'm interested to hear perspectives on things you think he DIDN'T do right.  Perhaps a more critical analysis from time to time will help ensure we don't turn into a PSU-like fanbase, turning the football coach into a deity that can do no wrong (even when faced with obvious evidence to the contrary)?

My list is small:

1) Waiting to unleash Jabrill on offense until mid-season.  Could his dynamic playmaking abilities have won the Utah game?  That game was so tight that I believe he could have been the difference maker.

2)  Posing for this picture.  THIS IS NOT A POWER POSE, JIM.  (Credit:  Melanie Maxwell - Mlive.com)

But it can't be overemphasized: The punt. To be fair, it is easy to criticize it in hindsight, however, the amount of heartbreak it caused, which may exponentially increase should Michigan State win it all, makes it worth mentioning again.

Watch Oklahoma rush LSU in max protect. They get there as quick - if not quicker - than MSU did against us. If the LSU punter drops that snap, he gets murdered and if the ball flukily bounces up to one of those guys, its game over.

The formation was not the issue.

Edit: At about the 2:33:00 mark is when the punt occurs.

I find her shrill, not particularly smart, and generally annoying.  She's a terrible listener (an essential quality in a good judge), rude, and comes across as something other than thoughtful.  Kind of a crap judge, when the rubber meets the road.*

Apart from that, I'm pretty much good with Year One.

*Yes, I know she's more of a talk-show host / personality than an actual practicing judge, but she still grates.

The running game was a big disappointment. I never thought a Harbaugh/Drevno coached team would struggle all year to have a competent running game. We can question the punt all we want, but it should have never come to that if the offense had picked up 4 yards and finished the game.

1. Defensive game plan against OSU in the second half. Should have adjusted to stop the run more.
2. Should have called a time out before the punt after seeing how MSU was lined up.

they didn't. He should have taken the delay of game instead of the TO before 4th down. In this very small but meaningful way, Mick D'Antonie did out-coach Harbaugh at that fateful moment.

Offensive game plan vs Sparty was too conservative. I know Rudock could not hit the deep ball at that point, but you still have to attack that man to man deep, over and over. Running game was setting downs on fire anyway, go deep!

1. Running game. A few strong games, but overall it was well below standard. 2. Fumble recoveries. Luck is the driving factor, but 2 for the year and 126th in FBS? 3. Roster depth. Really thin at almost all position groups. DL had the bulk of injuries and fortunately good depth. Thank goodness Rudock only missed a couple of quarters. He will fix 1 and 3 and luck will improve 2 (maybe Brown has some cure). But 9-3 is impressive in the face of these limitations.

You can easily argue that all 3 are the result of the roster that he inherited (poor RB/OL combination, lack of playmakers at LB, poor player development, lack of recruited speed, etc). Thus "fix" in quotes - he had to find ways to mitigate the issues. Recruiting Rudock worked, but he couldn't reasonably fix the other issues in less than 1 year.

earn JH's trust was disappointing. Magnus noted several times in the preseason and during the season how Isaac was in the doghouse. Maryland was his opportunity, but he botched it. Just guessing, but he doesn't seem hungry to compete and impose his will on the D. Hopefully he commits fully to JH's approach and finds the switch because he has tremendous upside.

1. I don't know enough about football to recognized if the problems with the running game are a result of poor OL play or poor RB play. Both position groups were quite highly regarded coming out of HS.

2. I agree that the lack of turnovers is really a problem (this has been an issue since Hoke's second year). Hopefully Brown's D can put enough pressure on the QB and be agressive enough to force both fumbles and interceptions.

Can't blame him for the MSU loss. A million things had to go wrong on the field in order for that final play to end the way it did, and they all happened. It was a fluke play that had nothing to do with coaching. The defensive gameplan against OSU, however, could have been much better. Installing a 3-3-5 in the last game after running a 4-3 most of the season was perplexing. We were repeatedly gashed by OSU's inside zone and made no halftime adjustments to reinforce our defensive front. It was painful to watch.

When you got an all-out rush coming and you still got gunners out there?

A fat lot of good that time-out that never got called did them. If we were in the right formation to get the kick off and Sparty STILL blocked it, then it would be a little easier to swallow.

Instead, we get to listen to Sparty crow about being in the playoff, at least until we get there.

If our special teams had a habit of botching punts or getting punts blocked or giving up big returns, that would be one thing. But when you start microanalyzing snap in-game decisions on an isolated play, decisions in which each choice has compelling arguments in its favor, you put yourself squarely within 'hindsight is 20/20' territory. There was no way to foresee everything that happened in those dreadful ten seconds to make that TD possible. In order for that play to end the way it did, literally everything had to go MSU's way, from the snap being too far to the right to Blake mishandling it to Blake panicking and trying to get a kick off to the ball being batted backwards right into the hands of Jalen Watts-Jackson to every single MSU defender on that side of the field being in position to keep his path to the endzone clear. It was a once-in-a-generation occurrence, and coaching had nothing to do with it. This wasn't a case of Nick Saban deciding to attempt a 57-yard field goal and not having enough skill position players on the field to stop a potential return.

but maybe letting Rudock expand the field a little more earlier in the season? Yeah he threw a decent amount of INTs early but I feel the offense could of benefited from stretching defenses vertically. It's really a non-issue as Rudock probably just needed time to sync with Chesson, Darboh, etc. Besides OSU, I thought the O looked great in the second half of the season.

I will only add what others have said-  but put them from most to least important:

1. Bad call on the MSU punt- running down the clock with a sweep should have been called. Too many bad things can happen on a high pressure punt with a kid punter- but if your gonna punt at least have max protect when nobody is set up for the return.

A hail mary success from that position for MSU is way below odds of a punt block- when you only look at punt stats where the defense intends to block it (punts- in general, always look safer than they are because these stats include punts where the opposing team is setting up the run back more than blocking the punt)

2. The decline of the run game during the season- we are facing the Gators as a one dimensional offense

3. Very little creativity on offensive play calling- very bread and butter stuff that uses fewer skill players than we have- every player should be seen as a weapon to move the ball (the Peppers use was nice but seemed more out of desperation as the season progressed)

4. I actually felt JH was too relaxed this season. I expected more fire TBH.

I do beleive the program is heading in the right direction and we will top this win total next year

But a botched punt is actually a pretty rare occurrence (and IIRC, that was the only punt our special teams botched all season). A punter and a long snapper each have only one job that they practice obsessively all year.

You may have a point on not being in max protect coverage, but that's also a snap decision that usually gets buried and forgotten in the heap of inconsequential mistakes that fill up the margin of error in every win. Even the greatest coaches make those kinds of mistakes, and they usually go unnoticed. It's not a game-planning, scheme, or preparation mistake, which is where coaching plays the biggest role.

The lack of adjustments in the OSU game. I don't know nearly enough coaching to say if that's Harbaugh, or Durkin, or Harbaugh should have overruled Durkin. But that is the only "welp" moment of the season for me. It was way too Lions.

The punt formation at the end of MSU was obviously an error, and I do think you can put that on Harbaugh.  As importantly, though, the staff should have done the quick math and realized if they just ran some plays that took a little longer to develop, like plays to the sidelines, there might not have even been 10 seconds left on the clock and we would not have even had to punt.
