What's the reaction on the Rome trip where you live?

Submitted by IA-Maize on

Here in Iowa I have been pleasantly surprised on the very favorable coverage I am hearing/seeing about the Rome trip. The trip is described by local radio and press as a huge win for the program both in free advertising and exposure. One local sports radio program has been talking about it every day thus far-music to my ears. So how are you seeing it in your area? any valid criticisms?

Now if only the offense had shown up in Iowa City last fall.........

Here in Chiago, not a peep. They're more interested in NW re-signing Collins and Fitzgerald to long-term contracts. And, when I say "interested", I mean buried in the Sports section near the Want Ads.... It's all Cubs/Sox/Bulls and tears over the Blackhawks.

Been that way for many decades.  South Bend isn't too far away (~1.5hours) - its about as far as Champaign-Urbana.  In terms of college football choices, there weren't many good options.  Northwestern sucked ass until the mid-90s and still had some bad years after.  UofI was never consistent enough.  Plus the large Irish Caltholic population in Chicago = large ND support.

All i hear on 97.1 (especially mike valentini and his personal 'yes man' mike sullivan) is how sooo many Michigan fans are sick of Harbaugh and his antics. I switch it on for maybe 2 minutes after work before I change the channel.

Other than that very positive things. Great opportunity for the kids, great for the program, etc.

had a good take yesterday

he thinks it is great for the kids and a good idea

thinks the press coverage is redicutlous - especially ESPN sending Marty Smith over there

I pretty much agree - I think ESPN is going overboard with coverage - but Harbaugh drives clicks so that's why they do it

and I use that term (TALK RADIO) very loosely. Yes this is expressly mentioned in the useful stuff click above. NVP No Velenti Please. I agree with this rule becuase that is not even good radio. Its a running add for Spartan football for 4 straight hours and has no place on this site what so ever.

Everyone here is obsessing over it.  It's all anyone ever talks about.  I'm writing a book about it.  Each chapter is a analysis of each day in Rome and my opinions on it.  I'll be selling it for 99.99 on Amazon.  Let me know if you are interested.

There is a thread on RCMB dedicated to the Rome trip. It's hysterical how butt hurt and jealous their fans are. They try to tell everyone this is a stupid and pointless trip, but only wish their coach did this. It's jealousy at its finest, which of course they will never admit.

overestimating the visibility and impact of this trip outside of Michigan.  it's cool, sure, and obviously ESPN has run a bit with it.  But as far as sports, we're in the heart of the NBA and NHL playoffs, baseball just getting into the groove for the season, NFL draft upcoming.  This trip isn't really on most of the country's radar enough for someone to even have a take, positive or negative.  Nor would I expect it to be.

To your point that we're in the heard of NBA & NHL playoffs and NFL draft weekend coming up, SportsCenter did a 2 minute piece yesterday on Michigan in Rome and harbaugh playing football...That's huge visibility in the sports world -- at a time when no other college football teams are even being talked about.

here in the Third Rome, it is the talk of the town. Harbaugh is a true conquering hero in the mold of Alexander Nevsky, Ivan the Terrible, Field Marshal Kutuzov, and t.A.T.u.

The overlap on the personal Venn diagram is off the charts. Listening to him talk about the meeting and his father in law you get a sense of how important faith is to The Harbaughs - but not in a way that is a turn off (imho)

In Alabama they are unsurprisingly obsessing over every move.  Here's a link to some of the coverage from AL.com, which contains several relevant team & player tweets.

Also, for those wondering what style of Jordans were in that box, Mo Hurst reveals (in the article above) that they are custom Michigan version of the Air Jordan 5.  I'm not a sneakerhead, but have to admit these are pretty cool and take me back.  More views of the shoe here.

Stopped after this: " There aren't going to be many noses to grindstones this week. This comes from someone who has been to Italy multiple times. The sites, the sounds, the people, the food, it all captures your senses."

A man who has visited Rome multiple times has lost the right to whine about people who go to Rome.

If I'm a recruit, I'd take notice.  Future spring-break excursions would be something that I'd be very interested in, if I had my choice of Universities to attend.

Business as usual here in town. I even got my Sparty neighbor to agree that it's "pretty cool".

He also said he's sick of hearing about it but would much prefer Harbaugh Doing Harbaugh Things to what the hell is going on at MSU right now.

It's all anyone is talking about over here in London 24/7. I can't seem to find anything on Brexit or the just called general election.

Imagine the circus if Harbaugh were to bring the team here...bigger than the Olympics no doubt. :)

Um, if I said something about it here on the subway, I'd probably recieve a:

Was ist die scheiße, uber die Sie sprechen?

or

Das is NICHT Fußball

More likely, I'd receive a loud SHHHHH
