Week Five - What will you bee watching - or following?

Submitted by Amazinblu on September 26th, 2023 at 10:45 AM

After an interesting week four - this weekend's matchups offer additional insight to conference play as the number of undefeated teams decreases.  Entering this week's play - there are 27 undefeated teams.   These games are on my radar - with an interesting Friday night game to start the action.

Friday evening:

  • Utah (10) at Oregon State (19) - 9:00 pm

Saturday noon:

  • USC (8) at Colorado (19) - noon - USC's defense vs the Buffs offense - who has what?
  • Florida (22) at Kentucky (NR) - noon - Kentucky is 4-0.  The winner might compete for the SEC East.

Saturday afternoon:

  • Michigan (2) at Nebraska (NR) - 3:30 pm - Go Blue!
  • Georgia (1) at Auburn (NR) - 3:30 pm - Should be an "easy" Georgia win - or, does Auburn have something in the tank.
  • Kansas (24) at Texas (3) - 3:30 pm - Can Lance and Kansas upset Texas in Austin?

Saturday evening:

  • LSU (13) at Ole Miss (20) - 6:00 pm - A must win for Ole Miss.
  • ND (11) at Duke (17) - 7:30 pm - Is Duke for real?   Will ND have a hangover?
  • South Carolina (NR) at Tennessee (21) - 7:30 pm - Can South Carolina upset Tennessee on the road?   Will Milton have another solid game?
  • Michigan State (NR) at Iowa (NR) - 7:30 pm.  Will this be the equivalent of looking for a wreck at a Nascar race?

Are any of the above of interest to you?    Other games you'll be following?

Enjoy ... Go Blue!

After the UM game, will tune in to MSU at Iowa.

Ideal result: MSU loses in a comedic error prone game with double digit turnovers miscues, penalties and all-around confusion YET, Iowa only scores 2 field goals and a safety for 8-0 score. A massacre in soccer and baseball but a puzzler in college football.

This will help turn up the Iowa lack-of-offense story if they can't put up 4 TDs against a spiraling MSU team.

B1G games are the higher priority so Mich at Neb is by far #1.

Can Penn State stay sharp against NW, on their field?

Will the Terps roll over the Hoosiers?

The night game at Iowa City with sparty playing Cade and his Hawkeyes. Any redemption for Iowa?

USC defense vs Colorado offense, could be interesting especially since the Buffs are at home.

ND at Duke- will ND keep playing with 10 men on defense? Is another choke job waiting for them?

BTW: OH Sate and Wisc have a bye this weekend.

I want to watch USC try to outdo Oregon against Colorado. When Shedeur Sanders decided to stick his fingers into a CSU player's facemask and tried to poke the guy's eyes, I've been rooting for opponents to give him the "MSU vs Devin Gardner" treatment. Except that Sanders is an asshole who deserves it.

And, of course, I'll be watching Iowa vs MSU. I expect Dantonio to cheap shot Cade into oblivion, but I'll also root for Iowa to find an offense - or, more likely, a scoring defense - and absolutely embarrass the Spartans.

Other than Michigan I'm interested in seeing how KU-Texas plays out because the Longhorns are basically the only Big 12 team with a chance at the playoffs.  ND vs. Duke will be interesting because Duke is the better team in my eyes and that's a home game for the Dukies.  South Carolina is tough but going to UT feels a bit too much.  And MSU vs. Iowa is going to be ugly on both ends.  I will say that the Hawkeyes defense, while on paper looking pretty good, hasn't been nearly as disruptive as past years. For example, last year they averaged about 3 sacks a game; this year, they've got a TOTAL of 3 sacks in 4 games.  If Noah Kim has some time then he can work against their corners and maybe make it interesting.

I'll be doing fly-bys (no way I'm watching) of MSU-Iowa to see if the Iowa D wins the game without the O taking the field.

So much buzz about Colorado but they're likely still stinging from Saturday and they're gonna get swarmed again.

College football this year seems to really suck. I guess Texas may be ok and watching Duke blast the Irish would be nice. Considering “ND is a top 5 team” signed by any buckeye fan in the world.

Colorado has more of a chance in this game than it did against Oregon. At least I think they do.

For one, its at home. Also, and more importantly, do we really know if USC has a defense yet? We knew going into last week that Oregon sure does. If USC still doesn't, this could develop into a track meet. I'd still pick USC because they have much more depth on their offense than Colorado does, but I don't think this will be 35-0 at halftime. I'd be Sanders will make some plays and at least keep them within striking distance at the half. After that, who knows?

Its a shame Travis Hunter is out, because if he wasn't, Colorado could probably make this a real game.

Coach Prime has brought a significant upgrade to the Colorado starting lineup talent, but I suspect the massive turnover has resulted in the two deep and three deep talent at Colorado being worse than last season. As injuries start to pile up Colorado might not be competitive against most of the PAC-12 conference.

As far as the winner of the Florida-Kentucky game competing for the SEC East, they are competing for second place at best. Georgia's only legitimate challenger this season, at least until maybe the SEC Championship, is complacency. There is no one on their regular season schedule who can beat them, and I'd be inclined to say Georgia probably won't be challenged until the playoff anyway. But that is more a product of the SEC having a relative down year than Georgia just being head and shoulders better than everyone else. Georgia doesn't look as strong as it did last year, but that's on a relative scale.

As for the Georgia-Auburn game, if I'm a Georgia fan this game will concern me in a few years. Hugh Freeze is a hypocritical sleezeball, but he can certainly coach an offense that can score points. Only guy I know of who's beaten Nick Saban in back to back years at Alabama. And that was back when Saban was really still in his prime. Auburn won't have the horses to beat Georgia this year, but in a few years? I bet they will.

This is absolutely the potential for a hangover game for ND. I'd like to think they will beat Duke, but they just blew the opportunity to have their biggest program win in decades in the final seconds, and probably flushed their CFP hopes down the toilet. I wouldn't be shocked to see them lose.

As for the MSU-Iowa game, I saw Iowa favored by 11.5. Are we confident Iowa can even score 11.5, total? This game would have Radioactive Man screaming "MY EYES! THE GOGGLES DO NOTHING!" Not sure why anyone would watch this unless they were an absolute glutton for punishment.

I like Duke over ND. ND has a really good QB, a solid OL, and a pretty good looking running back....and barely managed to get to 14 points vs OSU. I think that's saying more about ND's offense than OSU's defense. Dook 28-24

USC Colorado will be fun. Colorado's gonna put up 20 or 30 something on USC's "defense"...which isn't gonna matter much when USC easily clears 50. This is gonna be like an old school Wazzu-UCLA Pac12 after dark fever dream

Michigan State (NR) at Iowa (NR) - 7:30 pm.  Will this be the equivalent of looking for a wreck at a Nascar race?

I'm guessing it will be more like the equivalent of looking for a NASCAR race at a demolition derby.

Also ngl I am a Payton Thorne fan this weekend. Go Tigers! or War Eagle! or both, I guess? That always confused me, and I grew up in ATL.

Aside from watching us notch a hopefully cruise-controlesque W v. Nebraska, I'll be rooting for CU to get back on track, because the hell with Southern Cal.

We will be camping in the hinterlands of Kentucky and Virginia, beginning tomorrow, for the next four weeks...will miss the next 3 week ends of college football. Cheer the boys on.
