And yet we can sit here and act like Schiano, Tucker, and Fitzgerald products will be unshakeably formidable here in March. The "put up or shut up" crowd is totally asinine and contributes very little to the discussion. The funny thing is that they will also participate and speculate in threads on hypothetical hoops rosters even further out from that season.

Who's doing that? I said you can't assume those games are gimmes. And if you saw how our games against Tucker and Schiano went last season, you should agree those games are not layups (pardon the hoops term).

The "put up or shut up" crowd is totally asinine and contributes very little to the discussion.

I don't see how it's asinine to hold off on judging what this team is capable of until I see them play in a competitive football game this fall. There are only a few main factors that would allow for projecting what the team is capable of this coming season: the prior season's performance (extremely bad), the coaching staff (complete overhaul), and the collective talent of players (pretty good overall, but mostly untested).

The funny thing is that they will also participate and speculate in threads on hypothetical hoops rosters even further out from that season.

Speculating on who may or may not return and the breakdown of players' minutes is completely different from prognosticating whether the team will win specific games.

What am I missing? Maryland went 2-3. Scored 3 points in one game and 11 in another. They had two good games, and one was against Minnesota (who as we know can’t be considered good because Michigan killed them).  Why are people assuming Maryland will be an amazing team next year?

Northwestern will be returning the 126th-most production in 2021 after having, I believe, the #1 or #2 returning production last season.  It's like a service academy with their year-over-year turnover, and I think people are sleeping on that.

Also, UM is going to be 49th in terms of returning production.  Maryland, Wisconsin, and Washington are all top-15.  And because apparently people are gearing up for Soup Nation, Iowa St. is #4 in terms of production.  So they have no real excuse for not being a heavy contender in the Big 12.

I've looked at it. I know there are a lot of unknowns, but this isn't year two of a rebuild, it's year ...seven? There has been reshuffle after reshuffle - he has got to get it right, right now! We played like crap in the MSU game - that shit has got to go! We have what it takes to beat Washington, to beat Northwestern, to beat Indiana, to beat Penn State, to beat Maryland. Coach Harbaugh needs to find his inner 'Bo '69', find out who wants to be here, who wants to win for Michigan, then coach like it! No, we don't have the best talent, like Michigan should have, but we have the talent to beat the above. If we freakin' play balls to the wall, with a sense of desperation, we can do it.

I agree with your 5 wins but think Washington northwestern Indiana and Maryland all all very winnable games we could easily get to 9 wins and if the team is playing well maybe even 10.
Let’s not chuck the upcoming season down the drain because of one bad season. Give the new coaches a chance to teach and motivate we could all be pleasantly surprised next year

I'll say it here but this feels like an 7/8-win season, with the possibility of a trend up if they make strides defensively with the new staff.  I know this place seems intent on doom-and-gloom but I think last year's impressive run of poor play and poor luck led to some necessary changes with the program and I have confidence those changes will pay off.

'I have confidence', when have we not thought that? I've been in Coach Harbaugh's camp the whole time he's been here, but probably just like the rest of us, only if he's the man for the job. The program can't suffer through mediocrity, this is an upper echelon program. He needs to get himself, and the program there and keep it there. Else he needs to step down.

I think the AD has made it clear he's got to get back to competitiveness this year or he's out based on the contract.  But I have gotten tired of people demanding UM be an OSU/Clemson/Alabama-level team when they have decidedly not been that type of program consistently since the first half of Bo's tenure.  Like, Michigan has had 14 10+ winning seasons since 1980 and Harbaugh's got 3 of them.  Shorten that timeframe to this century and he's got 3 of the 7.  I guess my expectations for the program right now given the current college environment is consistent 8-9 win seasons with the semi-frequent shots at something more if they get some breaks.  It's not the most fun model in the world but LSU and Auburn have titles because of it, but unless OSU absolutely craters I just don't see how UM can consistently beat them for recruits and go on the type of run we've seen them go on.

Now, maybe Harbaugh gets booted and they bring in someone like Campbell, but I think that same pattern is the mostly likely cadence for football.  Like, a Matt Campbell-led team wouldn't suddenly become a juggernaut; it would be a plugger that maybe has a fantastic season where they go 11-2 and win a bunch of close games and follow it up with a year where they lose a couple of close ones and go 8-5/9-4.  That's not what we signed up for when Harbaugh arrived but, in my opinion, that's sort of the future unless/until there are systemic shifts in the CFB landscape and UM figures out how to take advantage of them if they occur.

i love football so stinking much.  it is my favorite game.  i love hockey and college hoops, but football is king, period, end of story.

I grew up a huge basketball fan in the golden era of the NBA (80’s through mid 90’s). I came to Michigan at the tail end of the Fab Five era, and developed a true passion for football as my basketball fandom waned (remember, this is when our b-ball program started to crumble and our FB program was regularly competing for conference championships, Rose Bowl appearances and a magical national championship season). From around 1995 through early Beilein, football was my passion and my interest in b-ball remained relatively low. Beilein’s tenure, combined with my older son starting to play basketball (and me being the head coach for his team for now 6 years) completely reawakened my love for all things b-ball. While I previously lived for M football games and only casually watched the b-ball team, now I find the complete opposite. I am a huge M football fan, and will continue to passionately root and cheer for our team, but I find that my interest in our bball program has surpassed my football interest.
