WAYYYY OT: iPhone cover/case

Submitted by bigmc6000 on
So I'm upgrading my 2G iPhone to the new 3Gs and I never put a cover on my 2G because it's metal and even w/ 2 years of use it only has a couple minor dings on it but with the plastic back I'm a bit more concerned. With that being said, I was wondering if any of the current 3G owners really love their cases and if there is a decent option for a UM case. Thanks!

I've got the same one, and the case is great. Stay away from the rubber ones, because when you try to slide them into your pocket or purse (I've been informed women actually are on these strings), the rubber ones get stuck. Pain in the arse.

I have the rubber case from Incipio, and while it certainly doesn't slide out of my pocket as nicely as with no case, it does not stick that badly IMO. I like the rubber because I feel like it adds a bit more cushion for when I drop it (I've dropped while riding my bike going ~15mph and it was okay). The rubber at the seam has started to split after about 6 months of use. Ditto everyone else who suggests the protective cover for the front.

I'm excited about the 3Gs as well. I currently have the 3G with the white back. I got the skins for the screen and they've worked beautifully, never got the ones for the back though. As a result, there are a fair amount of scuffs and scratches, although I was planning on cleaning it with some bleach water which should have it looking like new. The reason why I never got a case was because I'm a pocket carrier and the added bulk was something oft complained about by other pocket carriers and I wanted to stay light. On the other hand, if you carry your phone in a purse/manbag, then I would say any of the cases approved by Apple would be your best bet. Otherwise, the skin has been great.

Related Has anyone checked out the michigan iphone apps? Theres one called Letsgoblue that plays your option of three songs, the alma mater, go blue and of course the Victors. I love hooking the phone to my car and blasting the victors. Also annoying my Hawkeye coworkers. I love this phone.

The switcheasy capsule rebel, or the speck candyshell. Both are among the highest spoken of at iLounge. I've owned the switcheasy and it was great, Just bought the candyshell because its supposed to be even better. Haven't used it yet though.

I am a pocket carrier also- there are some scuffs on the back side but it really is no big deal. major reason for a case would be to protect it if you drop it, I doubt the skin covers will add much protection in that situation. I do use one of those bulky rubber cases to keep it in place while working out (i.e. on machines, stairmasters, etc.) because I use it as my iPod exclusively. 3Gs from a 2G iPhone is a nice upgrade! I will be somewhat envious but will wait until next summer when my contract is up.

Welcome to the 2 year upgrade plan! Yeah, that's kinda been my feeling about the cases but the aluminum of the 2G is, as far as I can tell, virtually indestructible. I've dropped it twice (about 2-3 ft) onto concrete and only scratched up the corner a little bit so I was just wondering about the ability of the plastic to withstand a fall as I don't think I could deal with it sticking in my pocket. (I'm gonna keep my 2G just in case something awful happens to my 3Gs so I don't have to pony up the $500 to get back to the 3Gs, maybe something to think about when you upgrade next year)
