LS And Play

Walton's O-rating: 124.2 at 23% usage. Trimble and Mason: 106.4 and 107.9 at 25% and 28% usage, respectively. It's just laughable. If all you're going to do is look at PPG and vote on that, why even have these awards?

traditional stats as well. Absolute joke he wasn't first team.

Conference per game averages:

                   fg%  3p%  Pts  Reb Ast

Walton:    .453  .426  16.1  5.2  4.9

Tremble: .414  .316  16.1  3.9  4.1

Mason:    .374  .389  17.2  3.9  4.8

at least Bridges had some help on his team. Jok was all by himself and still got Iowa to 10-8 in conference. They only had one other double digit scorer, someone I've never heard of at 12 ppg. Iowa somehow beat Purdue, Maryland, and Wisconsin.

Jok averaged 20 ppg. Bridges only scored 20 or more 4 times. Plus, Bridges was hurt and missed 2 big 10 games and scored 10 points total in his first 2 games. Consistency is more important in these all-big team things because you have to impress the voters when they see you. I think that hurt Walton as well. He may have gotten a few 1st team votes from the last 8 opponents, but he wasn't an all first-team guy in the first 10 games.

actually Jok averaged 18.2 in the B10 and shot under 40% from the field.  {he actually played better last season]  And, putting aside Ward [an admittedly big thing to do], I'm not sure Iowa didn't end up having a deeper rotation.

Deserved Better.  He really picked it up the last couple months.

Nobody wants to play M, and Derrick will continue to lead the way.

Not the right result based on last 6 weeks.  But based on first 6 weeks of Big 10 play I can see the arguments.  For our purposes I'd rather have a guy be hot now than in December.

Same thing happened: 2nd team all-conference. He proceeded to win District and then Regional Tournament MVPs. He was determined to prove them wrong; hope DW follows suit.

This is a ludicrous result, but a good one for Michigan.  Walton has been focused since Morgan's comments against Illinois.  I'm not normally a big believer in the power of disrespekt, but anything that helps him maintain his focus is good for me.

Here's hoping they get another shot at Minnesota.  Michigan would win by 25.

More highway robbery against a Michigan player. Bullshit. I get we had Peppers and the slob fest got old to other fans but at least much of it was warranted. This Mason stuff is just blatant disrespekt.

I don't get the hate. Do you want them to forget that he did not play very well for half the season? He only had more than 3 assists once in the first 7 conference games. 2nd team is still impressive.

Walton has been one of the best couple of players in the conference for the past month.  Nobody is asking that the first few games be erased, and if there were some top-caliber player that replaced him, then that's fine.  Nick Mason is not that player.

Start with the stats in the first response in this thread: Mason scores more points, by being much less efficient.  He does have a higher assist rate as well -- a point in his favor -- but he lags in every other statistical category.  His season simply hasn't been as good as Walton's.  It makes no sense whatosever to elevate Mason ahead of Walton.

This came up elsewhere, so I looked at their stats and compared them from the first 9 games of the conference slate and the last 9 games.

First 9

  Walton Mason
Shooting % 46% 34%
#Shots 83 122
A/G 3.2 5.3
Reb/G 5.1 3.6
Stls/G .9 1.8
TO/G 1.6 1.4
PPG 15.1 15.2

Last 9

  Walton Mason
Shooting % 49% 40%
#Shots 107 148
A/G 6.7 4.3
Reb/G 5.3 4.2
Stls/G 1.7 1.1
TO/G 1.9 2.1
PPG 17.1 19.1

So basically, Mason  had a slightly better first half (despite being less efficient overall), then became an even more score-first PG while his other stats suffered. Again, People act like Walton was some albatros on this team to start the year; he was fine during the conference slate, but turned it around after that Illinois game and hasn't really looked back.

counting stats is that they don't do justice to how superior Walton's rebound rates and scoring efficiency was compared to Mason.  I will give Mason credit for really good Assist and TO rates in the conference.  Walton's were close though, and his scoring efficiency and rebounding were so much better that he had to be the choice.

LOL, MSU's Nick Ward got robbed by not being on the All Freshman team.  Dude was 2nd in Big Ten freshman in scoring, 3rd in rebounding, 1st in FG%, and 2nd in blocks, all while winning B1G freshman of the week 4 times.  Sparty is pissed, and probably deserves to be.  Ward was arguably better than any freshman other than Bridges.

He's having a phenomenal year and his last game was probably his best ever. He's been really good for a while but lately hes been looking good as a pg, which hasn't really been the case for most of his career.

I think he has a future as an end of the bench guy in the nba.

Lmaooo Pitino wins coach of the year. Collins just took NORTHWESTERN to the TOURNAMENT. I wonder if they'll still be singing the praises of the son of Satan after they lose in the first round of both tournaments

I agree Nick Ward got shafted. I thought he would won freshmen. of the year. Walton should have gotten first team imo. even though he didn't play all that well to start the season but after that he was arguably the best player in the Big ten besides Swan.

Walton was the best PG in the conference by some margin. What a joke. I hope he puts the team on his back for the weekend and sticks it to everyone.

If the voters just go off of ppg, what's the point of this? Really need to go off of total production and value to the team at that.
