Yep, because our fearless supreme leader made this decision out of the kindness of his heart, had sincere reflection, and really asked himself what the right thing to do was....

Spare me, man. The guy was, and still is, a flaming turd who's not worth the chair he's sitting on.

Learn some history.  It's easy to be cynical with the amoral sociopath sitting in the office today.

Go learn about Abraham Lincoln (yes, a flawed man like the rest of us - nobody is right the first time on every issue) and read about some of the horribly difficult decisions he had to make to preserve the Union and abolish slavery.

If you don't believe that Lincoln was a man of deep thought, sincere reflection and in absolute despair about what was required to save the Union, then you simply haven't learned the history.

Lazy cynicism and nothing more.

Lincoln's not a bad example, but I also recommend reading anything by Thomas Paine. A number of the founders were focused almost singularly on doing the right thing, and there are plenty of politicians today who share that.

I read the title and was thinking this was going to be a story about how there was an agreement at some point in time ("had"), but the administration reneged and then went with the prior policy.  I thought this would be an article describing some awful chain of events on how that happened.  Was pleasantly surprised to see "has" in the OP (and I know it's frustrating that you can't edit OPs, that's happened to me a couple of times).

Good news that it's been reversed.

Part of the article that struck me as funny and pathetic: "ICE also contends that a full slate of virtual coursework compromises national security by giving foreign students free rein within the U.S." THAT was the reasoning that supported the initial decision?

The right thing to do. As it was the whole effing time. What were you going to tell the engineer who is sent back to her small hometown in Sri Lanka, when she has to do her coursework, but there is no reliable internet for her to do so? Oh and by the way, she has to log on for class at 3am.

What were you going to tell the kid sent back to China, when he has to do his coursework, and more than half of his required material is blocked behind their firewall?

What were you going to tell all those kids who'd already signed leases for the next year? Because I'm sure many of those landlords wouldn't have cared what their situation was, and they'd still be expecting a check under their door on the first of the month.

It was a terrible move from a logistical perspective, and just an all-around crappy thing to do to someone who's spent thousands upon thousands of dollars to get here and complete their education. Also, there is/was a nonzero percent chance that when they finish, they are going to stay here, continue working, contribute to our society and economy, and make our country a better place.

Why wouldn't you want them here?

The amount of politicizing and political debates on this board is exhausting. I used to enjoy reading threads. I don't even know if I enjoy mgoblog anymore.

At what point do we admit that the no politics policy on this "Michigan sports blog" has been and continues to be completely ignored and disregarded.

Well, I'm one that said I'd be stunned and amazed if this policy was reversed.  So here I am, stunned and amazed!  Yay for a good decision!

It shows that this is a great country and this is a great forum with a lot of great people with courage to speak out and with empathy for other people they don’t even know. This is what makes the country always great and unique. I felt that I am blessed to be in this country. A big thank you from a former international student. Let’s vote in November.

You take that back!  This is a horrible country filled with horrible people and any other country is better than this one with more reasonable and compassionate people!  Racism has been completely eradicated everywhere but here!  In other countries they are so much more tolerable to other races, religions, and political beliefs that I just can't believe this country stops us from escaping to these places.  There is a utopia that starts just outside of the hateful borders of our country, wraps around the globe and ends at the entrance to our other borders!

Good.

Now, if we could focus on containing/slowing the pandemic that's currently killing thousands of Americans and keeping the economy in ruins, that would be great.
