Urban Meyer ranked Below Bo and Jim Tressel in ESPN Top 150 All-Time Coaches
December 10th, 2019 at 12:30 PM ^
Let's actually beat OSU sometime before taking a victory lap on this.
December 10th, 2019 at 12:33 PM ^
Is this the replacement for "The" Ohio State? "Actually" Ohio State.
December 10th, 2019 at 12:47 PM ^
Not sure what Michigan, who hasn't been coached by Bo in a long time beating OSU who is no longer coached by Urban has to do with it being appropriate to be happy that Bo is listed higher than Urban. If people want to be happy about that.
December 10th, 2019 at 1:06 PM ^
You're not allowed to feel positive emotions towards anything college football related until we beat osu, duh.
December 10th, 2019 at 2:34 PM ^
The problem is the need to feel good about completely subjective nonsense such as this.
Bo hasn't coached for Michigan in 30 years. Meyer is no longer the coach at Ohio State.
Bo was consistent in conference and did well against Ohio State but his national success was sparse to absent.
Bo had zero national championships and went 5-12 in bowl games.
Bo was 11-9-1 against OSU, which is cool but dominant? No.
Urban Meyer's win percentage was higher, he had three national championships, he went 12-3 in bowls, and he also had great success in SEC. Meyer also dominated his rivals.
I feel if we are to be honest with ourselves, this ranking is suspect on a good day and wrong every other day.
December 10th, 2019 at 3:29 PM ^
How many of Bo's players murdered people? Did jail time? Slapped a woman in public?
December 10th, 2019 at 3:39 PM ^
If we were Alabama about things, Bo would have national titles in 1973 and 1985.
Because Michigan was selected by official selectors in both of those years.
December 10th, 2019 at 5:49 PM ^
Both of those years are legitimate claims. 1985 might be an even stronger case than 1973.
'Bama claims some really dubious titles...not sure why when they have plenty of legitimate wins.
December 10th, 2019 at 3:48 PM ^
List is mislabeled. They did this as a list of “iconic” not “best.”
December 10th, 2019 at 10:52 PM ^
So we are going to gloat about Bo being ranked ahead of Meyer instead of calling out that Woody Hayes is in the top 10 and Bo is at 21? That’s the historical comparison, I don’t see how Meyer figures into a comparison to Bo. Could we agree not to mention Urban on a post title more than twice a week maybe? They have an 11warriors board for the Meyer posts.
December 10th, 2019 at 12:32 PM ^
He's a top 10 coach all time IMO. National titles at two different schools in two decades. Undefeated season with mid major. Unless they're taking off field issues into account (which I don't think they are considering Paterno is top 10), I don't see how he is not top 10 or top 20 at worst. JMO
December 10th, 2019 at 12:47 PM ^
The only explanation can be valuing (or overvaluing) length of career. Being one spot below Frank Beamer is hilarious.
December 10th, 2019 at 6:23 PM ^
However... the idiots have Dabo Swinney (#31) ahead of Meyer.
December 10th, 2019 at 1:30 PM ^
Those titles were all won at powerhouse schools. Lets see him do that at Vanderbilt or pretty much any school that doesn't allow rampant rule breaking.
“If he wants to be the greatest coach or one of the greatest coaches in college football, to me, he has to go somewhere besides Alabama and win because they’ve always won there at Alabama.”
-Old Ball Coach talking about Saban. I think it applies just as much to Meyer.
December 10th, 2019 at 1:51 PM ^
So, like Utah?
December 10th, 2019 at 2:04 PM ^
He was only there 2 years, and that program was pretty good before he was hired. I'd like to see what he could do taking over a tire fire at a place where he can only get a few 4* players.
No doubt he's a great coach, and he built (on Tressel's foundation) OSU into a juggernaut, but I also don't think he's the 2nd coming like some on here do.
December 10th, 2019 at 3:11 PM ^

Bowling Green went 2-9 the season before Meyer took over, and then 8-3 and 9-3 in his two years there.
December 10th, 2019 at 3:20 PM ^
It's also not too hard to make small schools have good seasons if you're a somewhat mediocre coach (see: Hoke, Brady)
December 10th, 2019 at 3:13 PM ^
But the 46th rated coach of all time with a record of 187-32 and 3 NCs ? Good Lord.
December 10th, 2019 at 2:02 PM ^
First off, just curious why you qualified that for Meyer, and not guys like Bo, Bryant, Rockne, and others that your argument also applies to? Second, the guy went undefeated at Utah. I get why you dislike him, but at least make sound arguments.
December 10th, 2019 at 2:05 PM ^
See above. Also, I'm not the one that qualified it. Steve Spurrier did.
December 10th, 2019 at 3:24 PM ^
You quoted him, so I assume you agree. And again, that qualification would rule out most of the all time greats. Besides, I’m guessing when Spurrier said that, he was implying Alabama is in a different tier than Florida, or he would have essentially diminished his own accomplishments
December 10th, 2019 at 9:46 PM ^
He’s a douche who is dirty, not just Saban dirty, but banging coeds, coaching gang bangers dirty. Aaron Rodriguez shot a guy his freshman year at Florida and didn’t miss a game.
December 10th, 2019 at 3:04 PM ^
Except for when they were a complete dumpster fire before Saban got there under Mike Shula.
December 10th, 2019 at 3:28 PM ^
I don’t like him either, Hatter, but Meyer is one hell of a football coach and top 10-15 all-time, collegiately speaking (off field/ethics aside).
December 10th, 2019 at 4:03 PM ^
That is the dumbest shit argument I've ever heard

That is the dumbest shit argument I've ever heard
December 11th, 2019 at 11:10 AM ^
Anyone can win big at a school like Florida. Just look at all the coaches who have followed Meyer there in the decade since he left................Oh, wait.
December 10th, 2019 at 12:41 PM ^
Pretty clear that he is a scumbag, but to rank him outside the top 20 is just ludicrous. Some of the guys ranked ahead of him couldn't sniff his success
December 10th, 2019 at 1:14 PM ^
Barry Bonds still isn't in the Hall of Fame.
December 10th, 2019 at 8:40 PM ^
And that itself is a sad tale. Evidence strongly suggests that he only roided up to keep up with McGwire and Sosa. Had he not and simply retired, he was a shoe in for the HoF.
December 10th, 2019 at 12:46 PM ^
Fuck Urban Meyer! Fuck Jim Tressel! And fuck the fuckin' Diaz brothers! We bury those cock-a-roaches!
December 10th, 2019 at 5:55 PM ^
It wasn't the Diaz brothers. It was Frank Lopez. And revenge was sweet.
December 10th, 2019 at 8:59 PM ^
No. Tony said this TO Frank Lopez (R.I.P. Robert Loggia).
December 10th, 2019 at 12:46 PM ^
That's stupid. He has 3 NCs at 2 different schools while also making Utah relevant, which is still is almost 2 decades later. He's better than Bo and Tressel.
December 10th, 2019 at 12:49 PM ^
Lloyd at 50?? Don't they know he was a terrible coach who is directly responsible for M's sorry state over a decade later?
December 10th, 2019 at 12:52 PM ^
To hell with Urban Meyer.
December 10th, 2019 at 12:54 PM ^
That's unfortunate, considering Meyer's WNR8 is better than Bo's, and he was much better than Bo in bowl games. Sucks to be sniped like that I guess...
December 10th, 2019 at 1:36 PM ^
Lloyd did beat him once. So you gotta hold that against him.
December 10th, 2019 at 1:00 PM ^
Urban is a great coach no doubt but he walked into an amazing situation. Osu had won the Big 10 five of the last six years before Urban was hired. They were loaded with talent including a 5 star QB. He pretty much did what was expected.
December 10th, 2019 at 1:02 PM ^
Meyer might be the better coach than most of them but this sport values the program builders and definers not the pro style coaches coming in for 5 years to win a few championships before going elsewhere.
December 10th, 2019 at 1:12 PM ^
“Mr. Madison, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”
December 10th, 2019 at 1:12 PM ^
Dantonio must have been #151.
December 10th, 2019 at 2:23 PM ^
They couldn't find him...he was lying in he weeds.
December 10th, 2019 at 1:12 PM ^
Where's Charlie Weiss? Loved that guy.
December 10th, 2019 at 1:13 PM ^
What I really care about, and what I really come to MGoBlog for, is hearing about how a former head coach that resigned under scandal at our biggest and most hated rival is ranked in the annals of coaching lore.
Gag me with a goddamn tire iron.
December 10th, 2019 at 1:41 PM ^
Agree. If this meaningless ESPN list is going to be posted, the correct angle is to highlight where Yost, Bo, Crisler, and Carr rank. It would also be appropriate to then include OSU, MSU, and Notre Dame coaches.
The Urban-centric post, which also focuses on Tressel, is weird for a Michigan board.
December 10th, 2019 at 1:16 PM ^
Fiedling yost is inexplicably underrated in this. Total bullshit. The guy is basically responsible for the college football we know and love today. Without him, Harvard and Yale would still be having their collegial affairs and nobody would be watching.
December 10th, 2019 at 1:50 PM ^
"(Benny Friedman and Bennie Oosterbaan), along with Yost, brought college football to a new era. They revolutionized the game of football by making the forward pass more than just a desperation play in an era where the pass was just beginning to start its evolution."
