But for some reason Michigan/Indiana had to be a night game. Which, speaking of, heard Seth say at the end of the podcast that he was getting cc'd in several emails to the athletic department about that game. Does that mean the masses are sending their displeasure about the start time? That's what I took it as.
November 1st, 2021 at 6:18 PM ^
IIRC, the first weekend of November is the latest week that Fox can force a night game on us. After that the teams have to agree to it.
November 1st, 2021 at 6:53 PM ^
Correct. UM at PSU was never going to be a night game this season.
November 1st, 2021 at 3:46 PM ^
Good, no one wants to hear about two underperforming coaches during a primetime broadcast.
November 1st, 2021 at 8:00 PM ^
Look at the positive side. There will be one left after that and it will not rhyme with baa
November 2nd, 2021 at 6:11 PM ^
Get bent, troll.
November 1st, 2021 at 3:52 PM ^
I think both teams have to agree to do a night game at this point in the season in the B1G, and there's zero chance of Michigan agreeing to a White Out game on purpose. Similarly I assume Minnesota got asked about playing a night game at Kinnick and said "no, are you kidding even asking that question?"
November 1st, 2021 at 3:59 PM ^
I've got another wedding to attend that day, so I guess I'll have to rely on our famously levelheaded game thread commenters to keep me apprised of how the action unfolds.
November 1st, 2021 at 4:17 PM ^
I would hope your intel is more sophisticated than that.
November 1st, 2021 at 8:38 PM ^
Someone should write an algorithm that translates game threads into play by play.
”god McNamara sucks. His whole family probably sucks. We are better off with Michael Barrett at qb instead of this garbage”
translation:
incomplete pass. Second down and 10.
November 1st, 2021 at 4:00 PM ^
Good. Now why tf is UM/IU a night game? On FOX too. If you did sit-ups during every commercial break during one of their telecasts, you'd have a six-pack by the 3rd quarter.
November 1st, 2021 at 4:06 PM ^
At least the FOX night game doesn't have Gus MF Johnson.
November 1st, 2021 at 6:13 PM ^
Gus "I Beat Off To My Own Hyperbole" Johnson.
November 1st, 2021 at 7:17 PM ^
Kick off isn’t at night. That could be noon or 330.
On fox that’s still a night game. It should wrap up around 9:30pm
November 1st, 2021 at 4:16 PM ^
This was expected.
Still curious why UM & IU would agree to a night game *this* week.
November 1st, 2021 at 4:33 PM ^
Hopefully we can bring in some recruits for this game.
November 1st, 2021 at 6:40 PM ^
I don’t think it was our call. I believe this is the last weekend of the season where Fox can dictate it.
November 1st, 2021 at 4:54 PM ^
I'll take a night game in Bloomington over a night game in Happy Valley.
November 1st, 2021 at 4:58 PM ^
What about a night game in Ann Arbor?
November 1st, 2021 at 4:58 PM ^
Michigan fans are part of the problem of the football program.
One of my good buddies works for Notre Dame. They had a night game last week against a completely average UNC team and he said the place was bumping. Fans were excited for the atmosphere and it showed on the field.
Meanwhile, Michigan fans are writing to the AD because they want a noon game so they can get home early and what, nap? Why are you a fan if you can tailgate a go to a night game!? Are all Michigan fans 60 and older?
If you have a problem with a night game, send tickets my way.
November 1st, 2021 at 5:38 PM ^
Yes, I am older than 60. I have had my season tickets since I was a freshman in 1970. That does not mean I am a cripple, or obsolete or unworthy of consideration.
Are you going to the game? I would guess not. Night games are a wonderful atmosphere for big games, the place was rocking for Washington. Of course that was the second Saturday in September.
But after the game is a royal pain in the ass. I live in the north side of Ann Arbor, less than 8 miles away, it took me 90 minutes to drive home! For the Washington game it was probably worth it. For 2-6 Indiana it is definitely not. The high on Saturday is 49, the low is 31. It's going to be cold sitting there for 4+ hours while Fox runs more ads.
I am furious about the outcome of the Staee game, but I am even madder that there are putting this nothing game at night.
November 1st, 2021 at 6:41 PM ^
Yeah, if you don’t live nearby, night games are a huge pain in the ass. I’m fortunate enough to live close by, but for my friends from out of town It sucks.
November 1st, 2021 at 8:36 PM ^
Completely agree oldblue74. I live almost 2 hours away so I will not get home until probably around 2 a.m. one night game a year is plenty.
November 1st, 2021 at 6:13 PM ^
Agreed, I don't understand the aversion to night games.
Tailgating for night games is fantastic, the atmosphere is through the roof, it's always great for recruiting, and in this case I think it helps avoid the let down by providing a big game feel.
In terms of what's best for the Michigan Football program, I don't really see a downside.
November 1st, 2021 at 7:24 PM ^
Mich-Indiana is not an exciting match up. Even if they were undefeated. This is a let’s get it out of the way and see how we do against PSU kind of game.
usc Notre dame is a rivalry with a lot of history. Ofc ND was excited for that game.
November 1st, 2021 at 10:23 PM ^
It was North Carolina, not Southern Cal
November 1st, 2021 at 4:58 PM ^
The TV networks put every single conference game on a 6-day hold in terms of their start time.
Every. Single. Conference. Game.
Just ridiculous. I mean, U-M @ PSU, fine, that game will at least get some ratings. But they also did it for the likes of Rutgers @ Indiana and Northwestern @ Wisconsin.
About as fan-unfriendly as it gets.
November 1st, 2021 at 5:05 PM ^
Yep. Ridiculous. And while we’re bitching about the Big Ten, do they do a goddamn thing on these egregiously botched calls or just sit back and count the money?
November 1st, 2021 at 7:22 PM ^
I don't think I need to tell you it's the latter.
November 1st, 2021 at 5:04 PM ^
There will still be a thread later this week asking if it’s a night game. Raback it.
November 1st, 2021 at 5:31 PM ^
I will be there. And had to book a hotel more than an hour away, so I’m happy about this.
November 1st, 2021 at 5:52 PM ^
Your hotel may be an hour away under normal conditions, but it will be two hours if you stay till the end of the game.
November 1st, 2021 at 6:18 PM ^
On another board, a guy who's knowledgeable about TV contracts explained that the deadline for the networks to impose a night game without consent of both teams is now the end of Daylight Saving Time. Hence, this weekend was the last chance for the networks to impose a night game on U-M.
I have no way of verifying this guy's knowledge, but he has been right in the past.
November 1st, 2021 at 7:01 PM ^
JagsFan93 (if we're talking about the same board) is a legend in his own mind. But I think he's also right on this one.
On another topic, since this is THE weekend, I wish we could reform daylight savings time, so only the western portions of a time zone went back to Standard Time for the November-February period. I'm not looking forward to the imminent 4:30 PM sunsets of eastern Colorado. Yeesh.
November 1st, 2021 at 7:37 PM ^
Different board. The board I got my info from is in the hinterlands of the Internet, visited by only a few dozen people.
November 1st, 2021 at 9:30 PM ^
Maybe more than you think.
November 1st, 2021 at 7:16 PM ^
- Young players get psyched for night games. They're young, most of them played HS football at night.
- Fans love or hate them depending on where they live and are staying, drinking and tailgating preferences, and weather probably most of all.
- Coaches hate them because you've got a whole day of expending nervous energy waiting for the game to begin, not much you can do because it's too late to add anything; then you don't get home till late. They love noon games, because it means they can spend a few hours with family or friends or relax and then maybe even get a head start on the next game.
November 1st, 2021 at 7:21 PM ^
Considering that the last time Michigan won a football game at Penn State (2015) it was a day game, I fully endorse this development.
In the meantime, Go Terps.
November 1st, 2021 at 8:27 PM ^
Good. Hoping to go to the LSU/Arkansas game that day, so a noon kickoff would be perfect.
November 2nd, 2021 at 11:29 PM ^
I will be interested to see the game time. The basketball team has a game that night in DC, which I was considering attending since that is nearby for me. It doesn't look like that many tickets have been sold. I suspect that there would be more local alum attending the basketball game if not for this potential conflict with the football game.
