UMich at Wash- is it happening

Submitted by gobluefan474 on June 10th, 2020 at 10:10 PM

This may be a dumb post but whatever. Is the first game of the season going to happen?! I know Washington’s AD was still on the fence about it. I know the PAC 12 is planning on football. Has anyone heard anything?! Thanks. Go Blue!

There are more possible answers than that!  In fact, there are 20 of them!

(1) It is certain

(2) It is decidedly so.

(3) Without a doubt.

(4) Yes - definitely.

(5) You may rely on it.

(6) As I see it, yes.

(7) Most likely.

(8) Outlook good.

(9) Yes.

(10) Signs point to yes.

(11) Reply hazy, try again.

(12) Ask again later.

(13) Better not tell you now.

(14) Cannot predict now.

(15) Concentrate and ask again.

(16) Don't count on it.

(17) My reply is no.

(18) My sources say no.

(19) Outlook not so good.

(20) Very doubtful.

It's not good news.

Michigan has won three road games against non-conference opponents west of the Mississippi over the past 30 years, and one of those comes with a big asterisk.

1989 - @ UCLA - Michigan beat UCLA 24-23.  UCLA would go on to finish the season 3-7-1

1996 - @ Colorado - Michigan beat Colorado 20-13.  Colorado would go on to finish the season 10-2.  This is the most impressive road win on the list.

1998 - @Hawaii - Michigan beat Hawaii 48-17.  Hawaii finished the season 0-12.  This is the asterisk because Hawaii isn't Power 5 and this was the last game of the 1998 regular season, so it's not the typical non-conference game.

I was at that Hawaii game. First UM game I attended where beer was sold. Had a ticket in corner endzone but ended up sitting on the fifty yard line behind the UM bench with a bunch of active servicemen from Pearl Harbor. Most of these guys were from Michigan and they were partying hard. We had a blast!!!!

THE ANATOMY OF A WEAK POST

"This may be a dumb post but whatever."
Always a strong lead, come in humble, finish with a bang!

"Is the first game of the season going to happen?!"
Use of "?!" also a good sign - strong post forthcoming. Questioning shows an open, curious mind.

"I know Washington’s AD was still on the fence about it."
Some knowledge shared; finally, this post is getting somewhere!

"I know the PAC 12 is planning on football."
Some more facts, these more general. The OP is connected; perhaps an insider?

"Has anyone heard anything?!"
Another excellent use of the confused insistent question mark "?!". But also, a cry for help. Stock of this post is falling, fast. Could this really be nearing the end?

"Thanks. Go Blue!"
The nail in the coffin. Appeal to politeness, appeal to homerism. The post is officially dead.

Also, let's just call out the general open-endedness of the topic.  Are we discussing whether we should play the game?  Whether either Washington or Michigan officials want to play the game?  Whether anyone has knowledge as to intent to play the game?

Pick a lane, man.  Just that would've improved this topic; not by much, but it would've been better.

2 months ago, it looked like the answer would be “absolutely not, just like the rest of the season”

1 month ago “the UW game won’t happen. Maybe we get a B1G season”

Today: I’d say it’s >50% it happens.

Unless I missed the announcement, Schlissel still hasn't said the University was definitely reopening.  While young athletes may test positive and be asymptomatic or have a mild case of CV19, many teams have older coaches and other personnel involved with the team, not all of whom are in the best physical condition and might well be at risk. On top of that, CV is starting to ramp up in some of the states that reopened early.  Looking at the logistics, I'm not sure, be it a flight to Washington or anywhere else, just how this is going to work.

The guys over at Rivals are hinting that M is trying to get out of the game, presumably due to concerns over Covid and long-distance travel.  The assumption is that they would try to replace UW with a home game against a MAC-level opponent.

IMO As a group the Rivals folks tend to be the Debbie Downers of the M recruiting sites but do seem to have better sources in the AD than others.  (To be fair I think the 247 folks have the best recruiting inside connections.)

Don't ask me, I don't know!  Actually I would say it is a 50/50 chance. I thing the University of Washington may not start until mid season. The governor of WA may have a say in this and I heard he was not a real sports fan, plus he has a tendency to keep things shutdown longer.

UW and most West Coast schools are on quarters and run on a late Sept to late June schedule usually. So the players won't be in school regardless but that's always been the case so the "unless students are on campus the players won't be" paradigm has never applied in the past. Doubt it would be here either. Still, I'm pretty skeptical we'll get to phase 4 in reopening in King County but probably know more in a few more weeks.

It will happen until such time that it won't.  But then it may happen, after all.

Personally, and all joking aside, I would rather they let the dust completely settle, or almost complete settle, on Covid and play a B1G-only regular season.  If I were the NCAA brain trust I would eliminate all OOC games this season and plan for a late September start.  But NCAA and "brains" can't be linked in the same sentence.  Sorry about that.

It depends if the Communists take over U of WA campus and use the stadium as a re-education camp. If that happens, I'd say the game would be in doubt.

It depends on if CHAZ takes over UW - then they will decide whether football takes place.
