Michigan and Georgia face off in another national semi-final, today at 3:00 ET on ESPN3.

To get to this point, the 12-seed Michigan men's program (they call themselves Magnum) went 2-2 in pool play, beating Wisconsin and UC San Diego and losing to Texas and the 1-seed, North Carolina.

Magnum beat 9-seed NC State in the pre-quarters, and 3-seed Washington in the quarters.

Oh, and the women's team (Flywheel) is playing SUNY-Binghamton for 17th place, today at 3:30 ET.

I played it in the early 90’s competively - not the barefoot in the park style with the hippies.  Though hippies enjoy a good frisbee toss and I enjoyed hanging with them when they came out. Traveled the Midwest, met a lot of fun people and played on some great teams.   It’s a great game with the right group of people and a pretty good way to stay in shape.

Agreed. I played competitively at the same time - went to College Nationals in '89 and Club in '90, but I really haven't stopped being involved. I've coached high-school and college, and they recently added a couple more age categories past Masters (over 30), so I'm still playing. Played in the over 50's at Nationals in Colorado this year. It's a blast, and I'm definitely not worried about my weight, or my cardio.

Can't believe anyone downvoted the OP. I immediately knew what Ultimate meant.

Maybe it's not mainstream enough yet, but Ultimate today attracts substantial athletic talent. It's a fun sport to watch and play. I played competitive club in my 20s and probably half the participants were D1 track and soccer walk-ons. Unfortunately I played through too many injuries.

Glad to see the UM Magnums and Flywheels succeeding.

Yeah, UM did not have their A game. Seemed like they came out a bit nervous, or too pumped up, or something - they made a lot of silly mistakes. And Georgia played almost flawlessly.

Of course, it was hard for M to "act like they'd been there before," because they hadn't. Just making a semi makes this a really good year for Magnum, they're a program on the rise.

The Ultimate scene in general is looking up in Michigan right now; a mixed (men and women) team from Ann Arbor also made the semis at Club Nationals (not college) this year. Now if the Mechanix (the local American Ultimate Disc League team) could only win a game. They're worse than the Lions, having gone ofer for the last 2 1/2 or 3 seasons (I don't remember their last win). But I know someone who's played for them, he says the owners are great people, committed to the team eventually succeeding. It probably will.
