U-M Hockey vs American International - NCAAT Open Thread
We're #1! Overall seed, that is. So let's do that hockey.
Time: 3PM ET
Watch: ESPNU
Listen: MGoBlue audio
Let's Go Blue! Crush the Yellow Jackets!
D'OH! Slashing on Samoskevich @ 11:23.
So much for PP...
Bad slashing penalty for Samo. Not needed
Duke also got a little too ambitious there. Don't need to go 1 on 3 in the house when you're on the pp
4-on-4 for 49 sec.
What in the world. AIC got on the powerplay and immediately, intentionally iced the hell out of it
??
AIC goes on the power play and immediately ices it. Nice.
:20 of 2 man advantage for AIC. Slight danger of making this game interesting again here
D'OH! Van Wyhe to the box [for Hooking] @ 13:03.
Hey, no call!?!?!
Not a penalty after what they called on us?
Double your PK, double your fun!!!
Yay, PK!
Just got home from work and turned on the game. Had a migraine all last night and all day today. Nothing a little PBR and Blue Dream can’t fix though.
5-2 and just killed back to back penalties.
Go Blue
Big to kill those penalties. AIC's looking for some hope
So good to hear our Michigan Pep Band playing!
There are some fans in the building.
Great possession by Mackie there. Doing a good Matty or Luke Hughes impression there just skating whereever he wants
Laughing: “nice slash”
Twas.
One of our guys got their goalie on that wrap-around oppty
Nice glove save or else Brisson was gonna make it 6-2
I even jumped out of my seat to celebrate...then sunk back in
Is Portillo a possible NHL goalie?
Its possible. He’s in the Sabres org. I think the Sabres have their eye on Devon Levi right now but I think Portillos stats are similar and Erik has size you cant teach. I think he may get some time as an NHL starter
Back when I played, Ken Dryden was the tallest goalie known to mankind and I think he was 6 foot four. Portillo being 6 foot six and pretty mobile is astounding. I would think he would make a very valuable NHL goalie just based on a size alone.
Our goalies at Michigan we’re all under 6 foot with a possible exception of Fricker. He might’ve been right about 6 foot.
Portillo still has some work to do as far as rebound control and they’d have to make a choice between Levi and Portillo if they’re making a move this year (which isn’t certain).
signing both Levi and Portillo wouldn’t make sense. The goalies would benefit more getting 100% of the minutes in college than they would splitting time with each other in the AHL.
Neither is ready for the NHL* (as goalies take a bit longer than players) so I’d guess, if anything, they sign one. And I’d assume they’d lean Levi there.
*- As an example, Jack LaFontaine was an extremely good college goalie that put up big numbers as a Junior (had a down senior season) and hasn’t had any success in the NHL (.780 in 2 games) or AHL (.880 in 9 games). Portillo has been really good, but going from college to the NHL is a HUGE step
5-2 U-M after two.
Just a parade into the slot whenever we want.
Shots: U-M 11, AIC 12, tot 26, 19.
[Edit] Update, AIC had 13, tot 20.
It feels like 11-2, not 11-12.
Good period. A little sloppy but i suspect some of it is playing down
The like 15 minutes of this game we've been really engaged it's 5-0 and shots are like 15-1.
Michigan in the first 5 minutes of both periods is unbeatable
3rd period under way. Let's Go Blue! Finish them!
I love these announcers
Announcer #1: "What does AIC need to do to get back in this game?"
Announcer #2: "They need to score a goal."
/Bullwinkle
Seems like Michigan is playing more conservative at this point - defensemen arent crashing in as much. Another nice clinic in wasting time in the 3rd
Keep it boring.

Vote Beniers, vote daily!
5-2 U-M, 10:04 left.
Michigan making a habit of taking a lead and just grinding the 3rd period into dust. A good habit to have
Literally nothing noteworthy has happened this period
9:00 remaining in the game...
Review for penalty?!?!
I think I might lose it if they call this a major but the other got a pass
I saw the play. Nearside in our own zone. That is not a major
Power looked like he was almost bored on that backhand pull and shot. So easy for him
Beecher hit, phew, not a major.
Was not a penalty, rightly play on
Escaped that one
Icing on us, 8:07 left. 5-2 U-M.
