Towsley Museum in Schembechler Hall - Is it open this year?

Submitted by nmumike on August 3rd, 2022 at 4:06 PM

I am taking my kids to their first ever game at the Big House this season for the home opener, and wanted to stop at the museum before the game. When I go to the website, it says at the top that it is closed due to Covid restrictions, and when I call, it goes nowhere.

Does anyone know if it is open, and if so, is it worth a visit with the kids?

Thanks

I was in town this afternoon and wanted to swing by Schembechler hall and get one of the promotional schedule posters that they used to give out. Athletic Dept. Voicemail said it was open but I drove all the way from north campus to Dewey street to park, walked over, and there were paper signs on the door by the statue that said it was closed "due to Covid"🙄

Enjoy the game with your kids, though. Luckily there's more to see than the museum.

Depending on how old they are - and how much walking they can take - a tour of Central Campus could be fun..

P.S. I would suggest walking up Hoover (from Central Campus) to the Stadium.  For the first UTL game against ND, the Cheerleaders were in front of the Athletic Department offices - my son, who might have been six or seven years old at the time, got a pic with the entire cheerleading squad.  In a few weeks, he’ll be starting his sophomore year at Michigan.

Just an FYI, Schembechler Hall is closed on game days. I found out the hard way when I attempted to visit. As you can imagine, I was disappointed since I’ve always wanted to see all the memorabilia from the past and give my kids a glimpse of what Michigan football history is.

As for “Closed due to Covid”, I have no idea when they’ll reopen nor have I heard prior to today about the closing.

Yesterday I was denied admission to the Museum because of (1) higher COVID numbers and (2) the presence on campus of sports camps from pre-college kids.

I would call the Athletic Department to determine whether the Museum is open to the public that day.
