Today's Schedule of Games

Submitted by M-Dog on October 28th, 2023 at 9:52 AM

So, how was your week?  Um, yeah.  When I said that I wanted Michigan to be the center of the entire college football universe, I should have been more specific.

Anyhoo . . . there are games to be played.  It’s a bye week for Michigan, but there are still a number of games today that could have an impact on our season.

Here are some of today’s highlights:

At Noon on CBS: Indiana at #10 Penn State.  This is the first game where Michigan and Penn State share a common opponent.  So it will be interesting to see how PSU matches up against Indiana.  But, I’m not sure how much we will learn.  Drew Allar at home against Indiana won’t be the same as Drew Allar in Columbus against Ohio State.  Penn State will win big over Indiana (but not as big as Michigan won over Indiana).

Also at Noon on FOX: #6 Oklahoma at Kansas.  Oklahoma looked like crap against UCF.  But don’t be fooled.  That was coming off a bye week, after a big win against Texas.  They aren’t really as bad as they looked.  They may still be overrated (IMO) as a top 6 team, but they are plenty good enough to overcome Kansas, which they will do today.

In the Afternoon at 3:30 PM on CBS: #1 Georgia at Florida.  They are no longer allowed to call it “The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party”.  That name was banned in 2006 because it was deemed to be an endorsement of drinking too much alcohol among college students.  And it worked perfectly, no college student ever drank alcohol in excess ever again.  Just kidding, IT MADE NO FUCKING DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER.  So, I’m unilaterally bringing the name back.  Bite me.  This year’s version of The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party will see Florida put a scare in Georgia, but then Georgia will shift into that extra gear that we all know they’ve been hiding, and pull out the win.

Also at 3:30 PM on FOX: #8 Oregon at #13 Utah.  Oregon may be the most complete team in the nation, next to Michigan.  Utah is a perpetually underrated team, and that’s true again this year.  Utah should be able to go toe to toe with Oregon for a while.  But at the end of the day, they are still essentially Oregon-lite.  It won’t be enough, and Oregon will win to stay alive in the Pac12 race.

Also at 3:30 PM on ESPN: #20 Duke at #18 Louisville.  No, this isn’t a Final Four preview.  This is an honest-to-goodness American college football game preview.  Both teams are in the running to face off against (likely FSU) for the title in the now-divisionless ACC.  Duke QB Riley Leonard’s status still appears to be iffy, so I’ll go with Louisville in this one.

In the Evening at 7:00 PM on ESPN: #21 Tennessee at Kentucky.  Another chance for Kentucky to announce on a national stage that they have finally arrived in the SEC.  AND WE REALLY MEAN IT THIS TIME.  But alas, Tennessee wasn’t paying attention, and missed the announcement.  They will take care of Kentucky, just like we all knew they would.  Kentucky is the SEC team of the future.  And always will be.

At 7:30 PM on NBC: #3 Ohio State at Wisconsin.  I’m saying there’s a chance.  Wisconsin on the road at night is a tough place to play.  Ohio State is coming of a big, draining win over Penn State.  It’s the kind of game that has upset written all over it.  It will look that way for about 3 quarters . . . and then Marvin Harrison will emerge and that will be that.  Somebody double-cover that guy.  Thx.

Finally, your Pac-12 After Dark Special - meaningless crazy football just for the fun of it:

At 10:30 PM on ESPN: #11 Oregon State at Arizona.  Arizona may be most Pac-12 After Dark Special-est of all the Pac12 teams.  You don’t ever want to find yourself facing an underdog Arizona, on the road, late at night, in a Pac-12 After Dark Special game.  Weird ju ju happens down there.  It will happen again, and Arizona will take out #11 Oregon State.

So everyone will start saying penn state didn’t know that sign/signal to stop the td like Michigan did. Can see it coming. Michigan already guilty in public opinion court. But also- PSU may not be that good, which means Buckeyes are lacking- already hearing bullshit from Ohio fans that they’re better this year 😂😂😂😂

Drew Allar has the potential to be a good college QB but it's sort of crazy that people talk about him like he hasn't been a bit of a disappointment.  He's a highly-rated true sophomore - JJ McCarthy was a true sophomore last year and played great.  Caleb Williams won a Heisman as a true sophomore.  Drake Maye played well.  Jaxson Dart played well.  Quinn Ewers has been solid at Texas.  He was a top-3 recruit nationally and the fact PSU seems afraid to have him throw downfield means something.

This PSU offensive line is terrible - they couldn't get a yard on 3rd down and then got an offsides penalty on 4th down when I think they jumped a bit early.

If Harbaugh decides to move on after winning the national championship this year, I wouldn't mind Leipold as a replacement.  I know he's older (though still 6 months younger than Jim) but still has tons of energy and that running game is awesome.  Get him an elite DC and I think he's a championship coach.

Speaking for myself, I'll surely flip on a couple of games.

But this week has been, in football fan terms, exhausting. Having a pleasant diversion from the burdens and challenges of everyday life turned into something that is itself a source of contention and media rage and such is tiring.

So I might watch a bit less football than normal.*

One thing I do plan on: I'm tuning into the Rugby World Cup final. I'm vaguely disappointed that it's New Zealand vs South Africa, since they're the two most successful nations already and I was hoping for Ireland or France to supplant them (the QFs in which NZ and SF beat those respective teams were absolutely fantastic btw), but it should be a good match and I'm picking more up on the sport. And nobody calling it will say a single thing about a media-stirred controversy in American football, and that will be nice.

Should be a lot of fun.

*Of course there's a non-zero chance that I say this now and then wind up posting 20 times in the evening games thread because something catches my attention; this sentence is very much subject to change.

PSU must have Indiana's signals. That's the only way they could come back from a 7-0 first quarter deficit even if they were outgained. They must have just waited so people don't figure it out.
