No #1 is a sure enough thing for this kind of trade, which could set the Rams back for years.  Even if who they pick really pans out you're giving up a lot of potential depth - they better hope they're really good at picking up rookie free agents that can play.

I think it's a good trade for everyone. Rams get to make a big splash and the Titans can use the extra picks to help a team that definitely has enough holes to fill.

Didn't someone do analysis about this kind of thing and conclude that trading away so many picks for a high draft pick is just stupid and almost never works out? Conversely, teams that stock pile extra draft picks through trades seem to get better results?

Simply because, even with the best prospect, there is probably only say a 70% chance he is solid, and probably only a 25% he is great (those are probably generous numbers). So even if he's likely to be solid, you are losing a number of bullets for other guys that could be solid. 5 picks for guys that are 40% to end up as solid NFL players will result in more solid NFL players.

I feel like the Rams are in an interesting position though. They don't have a QB at all in my opinion. They have budding stars it seems at both RB and WR, at worst they have two solid young OTs. Yes, they could always pick up some defensive players, but their defense was actually one of the better defenses in the league last year (though closer to the middle of the pack than elite). I'm not convinced any player in this draft is an Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning, which makes this tough to sell, especially losing so much this year and next, but they are in an interesting spot as far as how their roster is made up.

Reminds me of Jimmy Johnson fleecing Minnesota back in the day...  The 'Boys gave up Herschel Walker for 47 players and 16 draft picks, or something like that.  It allowed Johnson to build his Super Bowl winners while Minnesota faded into little more than a footnote to Johnson's rings...

I see LA continuing in the great tradition of LA football teams - delivering on nothing more than the promise of a half-filled stadium.

The basic terms were that the Cowboys would give the Vikings Walker, their third and 10th picks in 1990, and their third pick in 1991. In return, Dallas would get linebackers Jesse Solomon and David Howard, defensive end Alex Stewart, running back Darrin Nelson, cornerback Issiac Holt and Minnesota's first-, second- and sixth-round picks in 1990. But each of the players the Cowboys got from the Vikings also had a conditional pick attached to him should he be cut before Feb. 1, 1990.

All five players the Vikes sent to the Cowboys were good enough to be starters in Dallas (the worst team in the NFL at the time), so the Vikes thought they were swapping Walker for spare parts & a couple picks (while getting a couple picks in return as well).

Never in a million years did Vikes GM Mike Lynn think Dallas would cut all five players.  Dallas cut all five players.

And it scares me as a Colts fan. The Titans are an awful team that is surprisingly close to being a really good team. If they can shore up their O-Line, fine a #1 reciever and a Running Back, and continue to build depth on defense (which was surprisingly good last year), they might just be two drafts away from being a scary team.

Looks to me like the Rams are basically committing suicide unless they REALLY hit with whomever they take.

I get the Splash move when going to LA, but who's the guy in the draft that's going to create that excitement, this isn't a Peyton Manning/Andrew Luck draft.

Great move for the Titans though, think they're going to come away from this with some nice pieces to put around Mariota.

The Rams wouldn't be trading up to the #1 spot for anyone other than a QB. The only other position I could see a team trading up to #1 for is to get a game-changing D-Lineman, and the Rams are pretty well-stocked on their defensive line.

That's a whole lot to give up considering there are no surefire, complete package QB prospects this year like an Andrew Luck. Any one of these guys, Lynch, Wentz, and Goff, are all going to be projects in some regard. Lot of potential, sure, but projects all the same.

But I understand if they feel they need to make a big splash now with being out in LA, and if you see a guy that you are certain is "the guy," go and get him. Fortune favors the bold, as they say.

If Wentz is as good as advertised, then the Rams are justified in trading away all those draft picks to the Titans to get him.  Right now, the Rams are a respectable team with a giant hole at the QB position, hence the trade...getting Wentz (or Goff) solves the problem.  And look at New England, they have done very well over the years by trading away high draft picks in exchange for lower round picks + players; and filling remaining holes with free agents.  That Wentz is a physical clone of Ben Roethlisberger is encouraging.
