Thanksgiving Crystal Balls

Submitted by njvictor on November 24th, 2022 at 9:36 PM

Sam Webb has put in crystal balls for 2024 3* WR Channing Goodwin and 2023 3* DL Jamel Howard both being confidence level 6, so we are in a good spot with multiple crystal balls for both

We have also received 2 crystal balls from Steve Wiltfong and Allen Trieu for a rather new name and recent Cincinnati decommit, 2023 3* ATH Jason Hewlett, both being confidence level 6. Haven't heard much about Hewlett bout analysts seem to think he will be a LB/EDGE

Happy Thanksgiving folks

Just watched Hewlett's Hudl senior year highlights and I'm impressed. He definitely seems underrated given his composite ranking at #658 and that his 247 ranking of a 90 (which puts him in the 250-300 range) may be more accurate. He seems to be a fast, athletic, long, hard hitter.

Also worth noting that Hewlett was just the recipient of a very recent 4 star bump from 247 literally days ago, so his true value could very well be higher than his current rating across the board, since they often don't go far enough with these late cycle bumps.

There's a lot that this staff had to overcome this cycle (much of it self-inflicted and heavily handwrung over already), but their late riser identification and recruiting has been historically on point, and it looks like that's occurring once again in 23 with the latest crystal ball whisperings. Hewlett seems in that vein as a high ceiling flexible rising prospect and I'm hoping for more, especially as we come down the homestretch towards signing day.

I’m not really a star gazer and I genuinely trust the coaching evals given our track record. But….whole lot of 500-1000 players. I really hope we hit on quite a few of them.

Sure GA and OSU got all the 5*’s.  Their recruits train 6 hours a day on the most modern and sophisticated equipment money can buy.  But it just doesn’t matter. Even … even if UM gets mainly 3*’s ranked near 500-1000 and they run those steps at Michigan Stadium every hour….  It just doesn’t matter.  Even if Harbaugh personally coaches up every 1000 ranked recruit into 5*’s … it just doesn’t matter.  OSU and GA will still get all the best recruits because they got all the NIL money. But … it just doesn’t matter.

Meanwhile, how many 5 stars is OSU trending for? I hope they turn out to be good players, but it’s still surprising the success on the field over the last two seasons has not yet been reflected in improved recruiting success.
