Texas v Maryland Game
Am I the only who gets sick to my stomach every time I hear an FS1 announcer talk about how Maryland dedicated the game to McNair or are trying to win in his honor? He'd dead. Football cannot honor him. It's not important enough. I mean, it's great for the players to do something, but the University and the institutions that share responsibility in all of this really shouldn't have the right to do anything but show serious remorse.
I don't know, sorry for the rant. Maybe I just need to give up on the NCAA for a while. I would hope people end up in jail over this, but I'm sure they won't.

Texas loses to Maryland again...ha ha ha. Tom Herman wishes he was back at Houston!

I tend to think these players knew him, miss their friend, and any take that blasts the grief of a bunch of 18-22 year olds can probably stick it. Even if it takes a complicit university administration to facilitate the ways they show it.
But that's just me.

Agree. This is about the players and their friend/teammate. It’s not their fault that their coach was abusive, and they’ve all had to endure this together.

Let the players (who had nothing to do with the institutional failures) have that win, man. Seriously...

The kids lost a brother and a friend. They did dedicate this game to him because it does matter to them regardless how badly the Coaches and University failed.
If this is how they grieve or celebrate his name, that’s their decision to make and clearly they chose that with the jersey, flag, and delay of game. Of course the commentators will make note of it too because it’s noteworthy.
But yes, it all sucks regardless.

They really are glossing over it.
Talking about how Maryland players are in grief because McNair "passed away".
He didn't "pass away", the MD coaches killed him.
September 1st, 2018 at 5:42 PM ^
That's my point. I'm glad the players get to grieve. But the way this is being presented and covered is sickening. It's not adversity, it's negligent homicide at the very least.

It’s adversity for the players.
Did anyone watch the beginning of the game? ABC went into some detail about Urban right off the top, establishing the issue so then didn’t have to revisit it every series. Did the Fox crew do the same? That has a lot to do with “framing.”
BTW good on Texas cooperating on the first offensive play by declining the delay penalty so that MD could line up with a vacant position.

Given that last night the announcers were talking about the "accusations" against Nassar, we've got a ways to go. When someone admits guilt we can actually hold them accountable.

OUTRAGE!!

I am so happy for those kids at Maryland! Great job
September 1st, 2018 at 5:40 PM ^
Happy for kids who were his teammates. The legal process is just really starting anyway, so hold off on the ranting.
September 1st, 2018 at 5:40 PM ^
Texas is still ass but I have a feeling they’ll be much better by 2024.
September 1st, 2018 at 6:36 PM ^
I hope not! I hope "Texas is still ass" in 3024.

All outrage, all the time.

Like the announcers last night talking about the good news for MSU and putting it behind them for being cleared by the NCAA makes me sick to my stomach.

Mayb kissing your players pregame doesn’t work in Austin lol. Fuck Texas!

B1G undefeated thus far. ( please do not let this be like the bowl games).
September 1st, 2018 at 6:19 PM ^
It's nice that the players dedicated the game to their friend.
The coaches do not have that ability.

It's an awkward situation. These things always get glossed over and turned into a sentimental, vague 'adversity'. In part because the broadcasters don't know any other approach. They don't like controversy; they just want to promote the game. They also work on the premise that it's all just a big fraternity of people involved in sports and many are ex-players and coaches themselves.
Sports broadcasting has always been a bit about dick riding the jocks. And college sports broadcasting in particular has always been about worshiping coaches. One has to remember that the kids in college sports turn over rapidly and aren't allowed to market themselves really..so the coaches become the main story and every broadcasting crew will have meetings with the respective staffs before the games they do. They indeed often sound like they're just repeating the narrative the coaches have spoon-fed them. Why? In those meetings they're all buddy buddy and you don't want to be on bad terms with your buddies. After all, you may meet them again quite soon.

I think that, for the players, this is adversity and I won't deny them this tribute. They wanted to pay tribute to McNair in several ways and they did, and even though the staff and administration failed them and was unfortunately instrumental in what killed their teammate and friend, they showed everyone how much this affected them.
September 1st, 2018 at 6:28 PM ^
The intent of my post is more about the coverage. I have no issues with what the players do, but the way the coverage glossed it over and effectively turned it into a feel good story.
September 1st, 2018 at 6:45 PM ^
The already accepted responsibility as a University, those responsible are going to be fired. At least they are doing it the right way. This was a great way to honor McNair.
September 1st, 2018 at 6:28 PM ^
I get your sentiment but what else is the announcer supposed to say? It is just a terrible situation.

First of all I am life long Texas resident, cannot stand the shorthorns. Live in Austin area and so sick of hearing how good they are/will be. But to think the Maryland kids aren't playing for a lost teammate and going on a "rant" is pretty callous imo. When this horrible situation first broke I was hoping fore Texas to win. This coming from someone who hopes Texas and O-lie-o State lose EVERYTHING they participate in! I for one am happy for Maryland and the players. Just tune out the announcers. Life long Texas resident but also a life long Michigan fan! .
To hell with ND!!!
GO BLUE!!!
Hail to the Victors Valiant!!!
Win the damn game!!!
